Been really piling on the sessions lately. I played yesterday and the day before, but I can`t recall too much. I`ve also been walking around town a lot lately, so my feet are exhausted. I think I may take a little time off shred, but maybe I`ll do Shred30s on the days they happen at Worlds.

Some highlights from the last 2 days:

*frontside eggplant ending on inside
*bl. pickup-legbeater repeat, first try
*haze-pixie ss rake. Felt LaRochesque.
*32 smears.
*super clean PSDLO, sealed with PS whirl bsos

C-Fan wrote: Max: sailing ss dlo is probably the easiest 4 dex trick out there. That said, I`d like to get that on video...
OK, so that was a set-up:
http://footbaka1.fc2web.com/shred/douga ... yoyogi.wmv

I hit that specifically for you, and even pointed at the camera.

From the same link as above, I was stoked to see that it was actually 16 tricks, which included fog, blurrier, smog, and bl. whirl in between. 8)

Today I was real pleasantly surprised to go on modified and find the first CSS7 vid released, as well as the Takumi/Me/Morii video. It`s funny though, cause I`m wearing the same clothes in each video, even though they were shot 5 months apart.

I don't usually dl 70Mo vids at work du to "internal policy regarding the use of company resources" or something along those lines... But I've tweaked it so the dl is only at 5ko / s, takes ages but I should sneak under the radar :)

Can't wait to see that 4dex! Cheers Ken and take it easy

Thanks for the compliments Ashley and Max.

I ended my streak of playing footbag at 6 days. It was fun though; I played well, had good mental game throughout, and even got on a video. So yesterday instead of shredding I went to the beach, which was super fun, but I woke up this morning with a massive headcold. :(

Don`t see myself playing footbag for a few days, so I hope people write lots of updates from Worlds. I hope that CSS7 vids start trickling out.

So the big news on my end is that I`ve been waylaid by illness. After 6 days of lucky weather and good shred, I went to the beach, then got crushed by a headcold and toothaches. I`ve had a constant headache for 4 days now, and my jaw and teeth ache sometimes too. I hit a dentist yesterday who couldn`t say for sure if it was my wisdom tooth or a huge cavity that was causing me these headaches, but he put some medecine in the cavity in the hopes that it will cause me less pain. No real change so far though.

Even though it sucks really hard being sick on vacation (I can`t even really leave the house), I`m trying to stay positive about things. This bout of illness has coincided with real crappy weather, so on that tip I feel kinda lucky. Even if I was healthy right now, I wouldn`t be able to get any shreds in anyway, and I`m glad the weather held up while I was able to play last week. The other bit of good timing, was that my sickness happened right after the best local players left for Worlds; I was able to play with them and help them prepare, and I`m not missing playing with them on account of being sick. I`m also really happy this isn`t happening to me at Worlds. I strongly considered going this year, and if I had, I likely would have had to deal with this situation in Germany, where I`d be staying on a gym floor. Finally, I feel lucky that this period of agony is likely on temporary, and won`t hurt my footbag ability in the longterm. I can`t really describe how horrible it is to have a headache for several days in a row, but I`d probably choose this over say, having chronic back/leg problems that slow down my shred ability. Reading other people`s blogs has shown me how petty some of my health problems are compared to others.

The other thing that is helping me through this period, is watching Tencho`s vid of Takumi and me that was shot last week. I must watch that thing like 4 times a day. Laugh if you will, but it`s the closest I can come to playing, so I`ll take it. After watching it so much, I`ve come to some conclusions about my playing style, as well as some other random thoughts about the video.

-I like doing flip fog and bed, but I should really try and put more in the middle of my strings, and not just the start.
-I`m pretty happy with my flip pixies, but I should make a point to do other flip toe sets in my strings. Quantum from that toe is pretty strong, as is leggy atomic. I`ll work on this.
-I shouldn`t "chase" ducking clippers. I should just bail to infinity.
-I think its interesting/funny that in the year 2006, you can have a video where a guy hits a quad dex (sailing ss dlo) and seals it with a 20+ string, and nobody comments on it in the video thread. I wonder if people didn`t notice that it was sailing? Maybe it`s too easy of a quad, and therefore not too impressive. In any case, it`s only the second time I`ve seen one of my quads on film, and I`m really happy that this one was also clean.
-Takumi`s mobius-vortex really stands out to me as the best combo on the video.

Anyway, here`s hoping for a quick recovery. Have fun at Worlds everybody!

Hey Ken, I heard Takumi hit his 2nd ever beast today in Frankfurt. I am sorry I can't give you any more details than that, but I'm sure you'll hear from him. Either way, Tom was stoked to play with Takumi at worlds this year. You're not the only one watching that video 4 times a day. I downloaded it before I went on my 2.5 hr commute to Toronto to visit my folks and I must have watched and rewatched certain parts 10 times on top of having the video and penskespecial2 play on repeat. I love watching Takumi play footbag. He makes everything look so easy and effortless. I like watching you play too.

I'm sorry you're feeling ill but I'm sure you will get better. Take some tylenols and sleep with some blankets. I'd bet it's something you can sweat out of yourself. I had a similar problem 2 years ago and it was because of my impacted wisdom teeth. I had to have them all removed. I really hope that's not the case for you, although the amount of codeine they give you make the procedure not terrible.

Get well soon!

Thanks for the get-well messages everybody. I`ve been feeling significantly better for a few days now, and I have 3 dental appointments lined up this next week to get a root canal done. I would have liked to get more work done, but there`s not enough time before I go to grad school next month. In any case, getting the nerves out will likely put an end to the majority of the pain.

I even felt good enough over the weekend that I got in a shred on Sunday. My first shred after taking 8 days off. I played surprisingly well, with a fair number of highlights, but there was definitely some rust. I dropped a lot of strong side tricks that I normally hit, and other times I`d hit combos or tricks, but my timing seemed slightly off. It felt sooo good to play again though, that that`s all that really mattered. There are other things I`d like to ramble about in this post, so I think I`ll just summarize the rest of this session with:

Highlights:

*dimwalk-jani-duck butter-duck butter.
*leg to jani, ripwalk to jani, etc. I was able to play into Jani with no problem, but I didn`t step out of any janis all day. Not too worried about it, considering it was my first shred in a while.
*DATW (i-o) x5, tying my old record.
*DATW (o-i) x7! New record! :D
*fog-drifter-duck butter repeat.
*rubberman starting on blur, pretty easily. The trick is breathing throughout.
*jani-pdlo
*atomic blender, sealed with pdx blender bsos.
*pdx drifter-pdlo bsos, first try. Something cool in the seal...spinning osis bsos?
*frontside flux
*spinning pdlo, first try
*a run with flurry bsos, a fog, a smog, and maybe in the same run:
*terrage-dod-barfly-barfly-barfly midrun.
*19 drifters in a row. I know I can do over 20, but for now, this is my highest counted record. I`d like to just smash it and get 30+ some time.

Sweated like crazy, but my body felt fine. I stretched out a lot, and my body feels good today too, which is a good sign. In other good footbag news, I set up a shred for next weekend, where I hope to surprise some friends. After that happens, I will be able to drop all this covert shit, and tell y`all what you already know: where I am. I`m probably being overly cautious, but it`s been so much fun surprising people so far, that I want to continue to do it, hence my cautiousness here.

I was going to post my thoughts about Worlds, but that can wait for my next entry.

Good solo session today (7/27/06). I haven`t been playing much footbag lately, but I`m strangley OK with that. I made a point to play today though, cause I`m hoping to surprise some friends over the weekend, and I don`t want to be too rusty for those shreds.

I warmed up real slow, and ended up having a real long, laid-back session. Felt like a bunch of different sessions melding into each other. In bad news, it looks like my red shorts are dying. They were only like $5, so no big loss, and I knew the day would come, but still kinda sad. There`s a real small hole in the crotch, which isn`t noticeable yet, but I should patch it up before my public shreds start attracting people watching the wrong sack  I should get a pair of black planetfootbag shorts.

I skooled flip reverse swirl (which is one of my hardest 3s) a lot, and made some good headway. I think I understand where I need to put the bag to hit it, but the muscle memory needs a lot of work. Other than reverse swirl, I didn`t really "skool" anything; I just played and let combos come to me. Most of these highlights were within a couple tries.

*johnny quest
*23 ducking butterflies
*rubberman, with pdlo bsos in the seal
*DATW (i-o) bsos. Hit DATW (o-i) strong side in the seal, dropped a bad attempt at bsos.
*reverse swirl bsos. Sealed one with pdx drifter, and the other with pdlo.
*DATW (o-i) bsos. I footed DATW (i-o) bsos during the seal :x :x :x Soooo close to getting all 4 in a string.
*pixie merkon (pixie spinning legover)
*a run with pdx egg bsos, pdlo bsos, and diving clip-gyro clip repeat.
*dimwalk-drifter-blender bsos (connected with a pdx mirage)
*PS whirl-tomahawk bsos!
*rev swirl-pdlo bsos. I found this really hard.
*bladerunner on my third try!

I was stoked about the bladerunner; I think its only my 2nd or 3rd time hitting it. In the sealing run I hit a `the` pigbeater using the other egg, then remedied it by hitting a clean one a couple tricks later. I haven`t been practicing bladerunner, but my flip bed practice helped me out a lot. In general, the smaller you can keep your eggs (low height, quick dexes), the easier and cleaner the trick will be.

7/28/06

Today marks the 9th anniversary of me discovering freestyle. It really is one of the most important dates in my life. I can really divide my life into the part before I discovered freestyle, and the part after it. 9 years... wow. So much has changed in that time. Unlike Clavens, I`m happy to have reached a high level of play. I can remember how frustrating bad sessions used to be, and I really don`t have those anymore. I`m really happy that my body can consistently more or less do what my brain tells it to do, and that even on a bad day I am way better than I used to be, even just a couple years ago.

9 years!

I`d write a longer post about how things in footbag have changed over that period, but I don`t have time just now.

Today I celebrated the anniversary by getting in a shred. I really needed it too, cause the rest of my day kinda sucked (more painful root canal, and then a slew of problems with my credit card). My body felt like it was recovering a bit from yesterday`s shred, and it was real humid out, but I still had a decent session. I hit a new trick, a bunch of new combos, and overall felt OK with my game.

Highlights:

*Joh....neutron smasher and pixie gyro mirage in the same string
james_dean wrote: Johnny Quest? pfft... it's sooo Neutron Smasher...
I`d normally debate this, but since you are one of only a handful of players who has hit irish spring, I`ll acquiesce for at least one post.

*bladerunner a couple more times, but I was told dex #2 is a bit thin.
*rubberman, pretty easily.
*5/6 of blubberman! :x I need to skool flip toe blur more if I want this drill.
*pixie merkon
*pixie spinning butterfly, but the butterfly could have been deeper/better.
*more flip DATWs. They are definitely a little thin, cause they are still wide and loose. They will get cleaner as I make the dexes tighter.
*DATW (i-o)- paradon swirl! 8O
*pdx rev. eggbeater.
*bl. whirl x3
*ps whirl-tomahawk, only one side.
*gdlo, first try.
*fs eggplant ending on inside.
*rev. swirl x3
*5 contacts of stepping ss mirage-pixie ss mirage-tapdown repeat.
*torque x2 bsos.
*FS and BS tap. Both of these are fun in a real weird way. Much stranger than full tap, or regular tap.
*DSO x4! New record!
*flailing opp pick up. This was my new trick, and it`s tough. Way harder than alpha smasher or fs egg.

And the biggest highlight of the shred was...

Rubberman using fogs! :D The 1st and 4th tricks were fogs, and I did all the atomics hippy. I was real excited to get this.

I`m just really happy that nine years in, I`m STILL hitting new tricks, still hitting new combos, and still getting that rush from the sport that I`ve become addicted to.

james_dean wrote: I'm interested to hear why you call it Johnny Quest. Where did the name come from?
Lynton Stephens invented many many cool, and incredibly hard toe-toe moves in the 1990s. Unfortunately, communication in the footbag world wasn`t what it is today, so several American players later on "invented" those moves all over again, independent of Lynton, not knowing that they had already been hit and named. Since these players attended tournies and appeared on videos, the names they gave to these tricks stuck for a lot of Americans. That`s why atomic mobius is usually called Irish Cream (Pete Irish) and neutron smasher is called Johnny Quest (Brian MacKenzie). I think another factor that influenced this renaming trend, is that Lynton gave pretty crappy names to a lot of tricks (no offense at all). "Wenttletrappe" and "tunguska" don`t really roll off the tongue, and aren`t too memorable (even now I`m not 100% sure what tricks these names refer to). So even when people learned that Lynton had hit and named said tricks before, there wasn`t much of a push to change the names back to the originals.

Anyway, as my profile indicates, the cat is finally out of the (foot)bag. I`m in Japan baby! 8) Thank you to everybody who knew about this and kept the secret (Josh, Tony, Jauss, Alex Uranos [thanks for fixing your blog after posting] etc). The reason I kept things secret so long, is that I really wanted to surprise the Osaka crew (mostly Kenzo and QP), but my second week in Japan I developed horrible dental problems. So while I intended to go to Kansai (Osaka/Kyoto area) a week ago, I had to postpone it to this weekend.

My trip to Osaka was a mixed bag, but I`d say it was 85% excellent. I`ll blog it more in depth later, cause I don`t have much time now. Anyway, in good news, today was my final dental appointment. Considering I no longer have insurance in Japan, it worked out to be surprisingly affordable. But more than anything, I think I made the right decision to seek treatment early, cause I didn`t want to spend the rest of my trip nursing headaches.

Even though today was a weekday, we managed to have a real good turnout at Yoyogi park. All told there were 5 of us: Takumi, USK, X+Y, Karzu from Okinawa, and myself. Both Takumi and Karzu went to Worlds, and they both picked up pairs of Quantums. Takumi still mostly uses his old Lavers, but at one point in the session the circle was made up of 2 pairs of GUnits, 2 pairs of Quantums, and 1 pair of Lavers (X+Y).

Overall I`d say most of us were off our game. But somehow, I didn`t really mind playing badly. I feel like a "bad" session was long overdue, and I never really got too frustrated, so it wasn`t terrible. The weather was also noticably better than usual, with much less heat and humidity.

Highlights (not real proud of any of these, but you take what you can get during an off-day):

*ps whirl x3
*some good janiwalkers
*ps whirl-ps whirl-pdx torque
*fog-atom-legbeater-fog....butterfly! I could have done an atom smasher too, I just brain-farted. Felt happy that I got through the hard part of the drill with no problem.
*blur-legbeater-blurry whirl-blur-legbeater-blurriest. I liked the wrinkle at the end. I kinda like drills with wrinkles in them, like doing rubberman but changing one atom smasher to a toe blur, and one blur into a blizzard. At a certain point drills can get too predictable and boring, so little changes can be cool.

[EDIT]
I guess another highlight was that I got to try on the Quantum shoes. Though I`m excited that footbag shoes now exist, I kinda feel like the timing of their release was unfortunate for me. I spent 8 years playing footbag in Lavers, but 8 months ago I made the switch to G-Units and never looked back. The feel of G6s and Lavers is pretty different; Lavers feel real alien to me now. The reason this matters, is that Quantums are essentially like Lavers. Had they been released 8 months ago, I think I would have been able to use them, and appreciate their good qualities. But since I no longer play in Lavers, the Quantums felt weird to me (through no fault of their own). That said, I thought they were kinda slippery on the soles (but then, I find Lavers to have bad grip too). In any case, I`m glad I got the chance to try out a pair and do a few runs.
[EDIT]

Takumi really was off his game, so no highlights come to mind (except for gyro pogo set, which I had never seen before). That said, here are a few highlights from sessions over the last couple weeks:

*surreal-swifter twice.
*surreal- spinning blender.
*clean alpine bigwalk... bsos 8O
*spin whirl-pdx whirl repeat to start a string that had mobius bsos, a vortex, and a bl. whirl.
*gyro swifter
*rubberman pretty easily.
*foot on spinning mobius
*some good looks at gyro gauntlet

Towards the end of the session we decided to play some 4 square, cause nobody had much gas left in the tank. We ended up playing 2 games (1st to 10, then 1st to 7) which were superfun. Really great way to cool down after a shred. In the first game, Takumi and USK really were gunning for me, because I have a reputation (in Japan) for being "tricky." Unfortunately for me, my game was really off today, which combined with them gunning for me, meant I scored all of zero points in the first game 8O . This wouldn`t be as shameful if somebody had won in a blowout, but nooooo, everybody else had like 7 or 8 points (remember, 10 point game). The next game I also got off to a bad start, and when I finally did score a point, it was a big deal  I ended up finishing the day with a grand total of one point, from both games combined  Despite this, I really really enjoyed the games.

After the shred and 4 square, we all went to a family restaurant and got dinner. I showed them some pics of my Osaka trip, USK made lots of jokes about Morio`s girlfriend, and good times were had. The way my schedule works out, I probably will only have one more chance to shred with everybody before I leave. Definitely excited for it.

You're in Japan!? Man, you're fox for being so secretive! 8) It's good to see that you got there, though. I've been reading your blog, and it seemed like you really wanted to go sometime this summer vacay.

It's really great to read up on your comments for the Quantums. Sporting G-units, I had a few doubts on how they would feel. I might buy the shoes to support the planetfootbag crew, but there's plenty of things I would want to get on their international shop (shred shorts! Ilja bags! Steel shot filler!!!@).

And to end this post: Fogs in rubberman!? Flailing opp pickup!? 8O Happy nine year anniversary in freestyle footbag, Ken.

Osaaaaakaaaaaaa (is cool). I have a shirt with Osaka on it, it's a sweet shirt.

That's interesting re: naming moves. That sounds like even more good reason to keep calling it neutron smasher to me, support the original inventor... not to mention a fellow aussie ;) And between you and me I don't really like the name Johnny Quest... where did it come from? is it a reference to some kind of pop culture?

Matt K challanged me to hit irish sping swirl the other day... I'm like damn, that's sort of hard. But I decided I will do it one day. I saw a video of Ellis hitting pdx swifter and thought: there's no reason I can't do that. And if I can do that I can hit irish sping swifter too. That would be mad...

I'm glad your teeth are all fixed up :)
