US Open, woo!
Wednesday: night Fletch got to my house after driving 6 or so hours from Redondo Beach. He and I went to EJ's for a BBQ. EJ and his mother (and Angel) throw the best BBQ's ever. Jeremy was there and while I was on the phone with Lon they decided that when I came back in the room, if I could spit a grape into a glass on the coffee table we would leave that night. I couldn’t do it. The phone call with Lon was good but sad because it was about the fact that he wouldn’t be joining our road crew the next morning when we drove to Portland. We all crashed with the plan of getting out of town by 9am. We left around 9:15, went to Dat’s for a while, then both cars took off. I was in Dat’s car, Jeremy, Fletch and EJ were in Jeremy’s car. The trip up was long but really fun. EJ switched with me for a leg of the trip, which I was happy about because I wanted to have a chuck of time with just the two of them during the trip. There was a freestyle (rap) session between the two of them, which was pretty fun to listen to. Ah yeah. The two cars stopped for lunch and it took us FOREVER to decide where to eat. There were some disturbing pictures taken of Fletch, I’m sure they will surface soon after Dat gets back home.
I drove Dat’s car. I feel a lot more confident driving a stick-shift car now that I’ve been driving his and Jeremy’s more.
The trip was supposed to take 10 hours but we got to Red’s house around 11 pm. It’s partly our fault for taking so long with dinner, but the driving did take longer than it should have. I’m a little fuzzy about the rest of the night, I don’t remember anything until the next day.
Thursday: We got all up and showered, then got on a bus to Pioneer Square to kick. When we all got there we found a live lunch-time concert going on in the Square, so we had music to kick to and lots of people walking around and enjoying their lunch breaks. I met a really nice woman named Laura who was a good hacker. I gave her the only Mr. Sandbag that I brought with me on the trip and asked her to promise to use it. I played footbag for the first time in a long time.

If I hadn’t gone on the trip, I still would have tried playing footbag again because it’s the right time to. I’m still doing physical therapy to stretch out my ham strings, but I have a lot less back pain than I used to. I’m not getting my hopes up, we’ll just see how this goes over the next few months. I did 15 or so osis>osis and 14 infinities. Not so memerable, but I was thrilled to do consecutive toe stalls much less actual tricks.
I think most people arrived during the day on Thursday. When the Rain City Shred group arrived I met the awesome Sam Potter for the first time.
I saw Alex Strassman again for the first time since I met him at Chilly Philly 05. And surprise! David Clavens was with them too. (Alex, David and I have all recently had braces and are wearing the same kind of retainers, represent.) David had told me that he couldn’t attend the event and left me a voicemail the day before saying that he was on his way to work but to have a fun weekend. People passed out some fliers to random hackers and passersby. In our matching fishing hats, Red and I went to get some Chinese food.
My fortune cookie said “Your sports team will be very successful this year.” Perfect.
After people left there, we all went to the event site, Colonel Sumner's Park for registration.
Next:
I’m getting tired and I’m not sure what order these all belong in but I want to post this tonight so I’ll keep going.
There were a lot of surprise attendees at the event. David, Jorden (sort of), Ellis Piltz, James Randall, and Stephen Barnes.
I guess it’s trendy in the footbag scene right now.
I’m disappointed that I didn’t know freckled lemonade was possible on this trip, but the VooDoo Doughnuts were AMAZING. Steve and four other people (David, Alex, Sam, and Stephen?) were going after the party at Chris Siebert’s house so I hopped in with them. We got a baker’s dozen and one of them had bacon on it. No one wanted it so Sam said he’d take it, and then he told me to try it. Like the gum that Violet chews in Willy Wonka’s factory, it was like eating a complete meal. In this case it was breakfast- all buttery and syrupy and oh-so-good.
On Sunday everyone was done with competitions and the award ceremony. I saw Kenny watching people freestyle and asked him if he’d come freestyle in our circle which at that point was me, Sunny and Tuan.
I asked “please?” and he said yes. I was so excited. I was in a circle with Tuan and Kenny? The circle ended up being Sunny, Sean Wingert, Tuan Vu, Kenny Shults and me. Eeeee. I felt a little bad about being in that circle because I was playing so badly, but they could move to a different circle if they wanted everything to be intense shred. Kenny did move on the other circles and I was glad to see Jorden filming since I was just sitting taking all the circles in.
I enjoyed talking with Sean Wingert on Thursday when he randomly walked by the shred in the Square. He was in business clothes because he was on his lunch break. I was sitting out so we started to talk, and I knew his name was familiar but didn’t know why. After talking with him for a while I found out that he made Shredded Wheat (1997), UQuam (1998) Jam, and Skool Daze (1998) which I own all of, but I haven’t watched yet. So that was neat. We also talked about the CIC guys and he told me about when Zeke started making shirts and meeting James Risden and other fun things.

James Randall has a bad sense of smell. I guess that’s a good thing if he is going to keep attending Footbag events.
I was disappointed that Carol didn’t make it, neither did Savanna Jay-Bonn and neither did Jane Jones who I’ve never kicked with or met. I did meet Kendall Kic and helped her with any event stuff she wanted help with. Over the weekend he gave me a Flying Clipper 32 and a shirt from her own collection which I was thrilled to get as a present. She let me pick from a few and I’ll post a picture of it as soon as I get the shirt from Jeremy’s car. I also got a large US Open shirt from this year because I was a volunteer, but it’s way too big. If anyone wants to trade up from a smaller size I would be really happy.
One thing I was really disappointed about at this event was that the freestyle finals were at the same time as the net finals. Okay, so here’s the weird part. I stayed at the net final instead of going to see the freestyle finals. I know, I don’t know either. I think my logic was that net is way more fun to see in person than on video for me, and I knew I would see all of the freestyle finals on video later on, and PT was so appreciative of me thinking about staying there to watch the net final and tape since he thought no one else would be taping. PT, Eric and Kenny were all happy that I stayed and watched them instead of going to the freestyle final and even thanked me for it. And I had a really good time watching their awesome match, PT and Kenny VS. John Leys and Eric Wulff while hanging out with Jeremy, EJ and Sage.

But… I felt really bad afterwards for not supporting the people I know as friends. Guilt.
I was playing a fun 4-Square game with Steve, Ellis, Dylan Fry, and a few other people and another Dylan who was about 12 years old? asked people to come and watch the net game his mother (Tricia George) was playing in. He asked everyone who was playing and no one would go. I figured someone told him to go to try to recruit some spectators and he was just doing it because someone asked him to. Later he came back and asked me if I would please come and watch, so I said yes. I was surprised at how much he appreciated it, because he wasn’t getting spectators because someone else wanted him to, he just wanted people to come and support the players. Hours later we were sitting at a picnic table and he said “thanks again for coming to watch the match earlier.” This made me think about the way the two branches of footbag interact. Someone at the competition said something about how net players aren’t as fun as freestyle players or something like that, and I said “Net players are [often] ex-freestylers.” I guess it’s a respect-for-those-who-came-before-you thing to me, I don’t know.
I was watching a pickup game the Jeremy was playing and behind me Kenny was talking to two people about the start of his footbag life. Yes, technically eavesdropping, but they were literally less than a two feet away from me. I think Kenny was talking about the first event he went to, and he was talking about how his consecutives record was around 450 and he met Jack Schoolcraft whose record was like 1250 and that pushed Kenny to just get better and better. I think that’s cool.

Net people:

I met Kenny for the first time and that was a thrill for me. Andre LeMaire

and I talked a bunch of times over the whole weekend. I went and sat next to him the first day and he told me about the Gatekeeper, Francois Leh.
Andre told me that to become Open a player must first get past Francois who is Intermediate but very good, and very consistent. Jeremy says Francois is 60. I just read his profile on .org which says “Called the gatekeeper by Dave Bernard, many years ago. I still am some sort of gate keeper...but the new players get by me easily if they know how! I may consider calling myself ...the sieve, pretty soon , unless I improve my game ...which is not completely impossible.” I played a net game with Jeremy against Francois and EJ on Sunday. I was fairly bad which was expected, but it was a very fun game. I think the final score was 8:15, but I don’t remember for sure. Later on Sunday I took a picture with PT, Eric, Chris Ott, and I can’t remember the name of the guy in the hat.

It’s a little blurry, but still good. Eric Wulff said I’m getting too old for freestyle, and I need to switch over to net. He also said that at 24 Jeremy is WAY too old for freestyle and needs to give it up for net. They were talking about winning him over to their side and then Eric looked up to see Jeremy in a freestyle circle, then started yelling at Jeremy to stop it. Good timing.

I had exchanged a few e-mails with Chris Ott about Worlds 07, so it was nice to meet him in person. He said he had some experience with the guys at Duncan and then we talked about Worlds stuff which turned out to be really interesting and exciting. He explained the reasoning for the dates and some of the perks of the Disney deal. This could be truly amazing.
I played 4-Square with John Stalberger.
Sunday night we fit 10.5 people in the Freedom van – and I was driving.

Sweet, go designated drivers!

I got to sleep at Red’s house because of that, and Monday morning I came really close to falling down Red’s stairs. Both feel slipped out from underneath me and if I hadn’t had one hand on the railing and the other near the wall I would have flown down the stairs because my feet slipped out so fast. Luckily, I caught myself and got away with a skinned elbow. I’m clumsy, but Red says a lot of people almost fall down those stairs for some reason. Here’s a picture of an unrelated war wound from battling Jorden in 4-Square. He did some kind of double down move and it was going to drop into my square so I kicked and he didn’t end up getting me. Not a high price for glory.

Someone else wrote my last name, aww.

8 or 9 of us decided to spend the night at a hotel since the only open place to sleep was Noah's and it was the night of the HUGE house party. I had been to a party like that in Feb. when I was in Portland, and none of us wanted to attend, much less try to sleep through it. So we got a hotel room and hung out there.

We got back from the US Open at like 4am on Tuesday morning after a really long trip with FIVE people in the car.

I didn’t talk about several people I ended up being able to hang out with or meet for the first time, but I think if I kept writing I’d forget more stuff than I’d remember. I wish Ken had been able to make it, it seemed like he just should have been present there.
I wish I had taken pictures of the Footbag Hall of Fame board that was set up. It was neat seeing people that I know now, Steve G., Constance, and a few others.
I didn’t talk about results because other threads have done that. But it was true that my sports team was successful. I don’t expect this to have been read from start to finish like a book, but maybe you saw a picture and wondered who it was and got to read about them.
Again, my blog is 95% just for me, and if you like it 5% as much as I do, well that’s just fine.

Thanks! Here's a few more pictures.
I should have said in the first post that I'm using pictures from Jeremy's camera since they're all on my computer because his isn't working. So thanks for letting me post them, and thanks to anyone who took pictures with his camera at the event.

I should tell you about my new method of posting pictures. Since they are so big when the camera puts the pictures on the computer, I'm now useing ImRe (thanks to Dat) to shrink whole folders worth of pictures at a time then using ImageShack's toolbar feature to load whole folders worth of pictures at once. It used to take a long time for me to do photo uploading stuff but now it's super quick. The photo quality isn't as nice as it could be for the ones I posted, but I have the originals on my computer so if anyone wants a good quality copy of any of these, let me know.

Okay, I wanted to be done with this monster post, but as I knew it would, it's going to continue until my mind lets me stop thinking about all the stuff that happened.
This was the first event I was filming for myself. Steve G. lets Dat borrow his really nice camcorder for events, so Dat and I did some taping. I asked him what was going to happen with the footage and he said I could edit it if I wanted. Woo! How fun. This made me happier about filming for the rest of the weekend. It's going to be a huge project since there are somewhere around 15 hours worth of tapes... but it'll be so fun. After we had left for the weekend, Fletch, Dave Morawski (formerly known as Davey M.) and I watched Fourkast in the backseat on a portable DVD player. I wish I would have watched a shred video before filming because I already know some things I did wrong with how close up/far away I was from the players.
I also did a lot of taping because Red needed a camera person for each event, so I used his camera for him. He told me to make sure to get as much of everything as possible for the circle competition and to stand in front of people if I had to because they could move. When filming for myself I did my best to ask people if they minded being filmed. If someone said it was okay on the first day, I assumed it was okay on the second and third day.
I felt kind of like a filmer-poser, but even if the video I edit is crap, at least people will still see some good shred.

Wow...first of all...I feel like an idiot. I think I hit this blog's link and then noticed and tried to hit the last page link before the new page uploaded. I thought I did it, but I didn't. I didn't catch that I was reading the first page for a while...I thought something was weird...the fact that you were having trouble hitting clippers back to back and all that basic stuff. I just figured maybe you were taking it easy because of your legs/back. I looked at the date at one point...I only noticed that it was the 16th (today!...technically) (not that it was NOVEMBER or 2004!). So I kept reading, and then I noticed it was the 24th! I thought, "Wow I didn't know you could post ahead of time!" But I didn't believe that thought and checked the date again and saw 2004. AAAAAAH. Blonde moment.
Anyways. That was a very, VERY long post. I had a bunch of things to say to a bunch of things, but I don't remember. I do remember wondering what the heck that bathroom picture meant, and I also remember it took me a while to figure out what that picture of some guy with a ponytail infront of his face to block the sun was. I laughed pretty hard at that when I realized it. Overall...looks like you had tons of fun.
Oh yeah...and the fact that you changed your blog name also confused me while I was reading your first page...
<shakes>
Anyways...talk to ya later.

Nice Avatar, Dave.
Chrissy, you're so awesome for posting that because that's the sort of thing that happens to everyone every once in a while but no one talks about it... or else it just happens to me and I just don't post about it.
Hmmm....
It was a very long post, but in a year I'll be glad I made it when I read over it again. The guy with the ponytail in his face is EJ, a Santa Cruz kicker who plays freestyle and net.
Damn you, James Randall. Damn you back to... Lilac City? That's punishment enough.
Keep waiting, Fletch. I'll post pictures of myself with medals when I earn them.

Okay, last post for the night. I just kicked a bit in my room. I did some inside kicks and toe stalls, then worked on pixie sets for a few minutes. I did four in a row a few different times. I was going to do some osis stuff but my back was feeling odd, so I stopped. I don't think I'll be up for a real session for a while, but little stuff like this will keep me happy for a while.
I'm going to stretch then go to sleep.
Goodnight,
Emily

Thanks a bunch.
I'm still trying not to use emoticons for whatever reason.
Yesterday I tried net and didn't have much luck. I didn't have the eye-foot coordination or depth perception required to make contact with the bag* a lot of the time. I didn't care enough to get frustrated.
*I've noticed even people in net call the net bag a ball sometimes. No real point to that observation, just sayin.

I didn't include pictures of the master bedroom because I think it would freak my sister and Jason out a bit if I posted pictures of their room and bathroom online. Weirdos.
