The same footbag tricks that are possible today, were possible 6000 years ago, when the ancient Mesopotamian civilization arose. It seems strange to me that it took us humans 6000+ years to discover what was possible with a 'bean' bag; hacky sack, and freestyle. Juggling (with hands) was discovered Very early (1947 A.D.) Takraw came close, but is more like soccer than footbag.
Of course, facile and Lavers would not be possible without modern technology, but people could have definitely shredded with leather sandals, and some kind of footbag made of available materials.
What if people were shredding-it-up, even 400 years ago? Can you imagine Alexander the Great busting fearless strings in celebration of victorious battles, or ancient tribes dueling it out with shred-30 contests? I can't imagine where the sport would be today if it would've been discovered significantly earlier.
Why do you think it took humans so long to discover the possibilities, and where do you think the sport would be today if 'ancient' peoples were busting mobius > ripped warrior, hundreds, or thousands of years ago?

As far as why people werent busting huge tricks 2000 years ago is likely that they had to deal with everyday life as it was back then...

ya. I agree to a certain extent... but what about royal jesters and entertainers like that? They juggled didn't they? Why no shred? It's not like there was a lack of professional athletes either. I wonder what cool activities and games that were created it the past have become lost in the sands of time. Sure footbag may be a new invention, but there has to be some equally fun games that have been played in the past that no one knows of anymore.

One of the earlier forms of rap was created by the Irish. There was a poem written about a trian that had the sound of a trian in the back. Like "chugga-chugga-chugga-chugga... etc" while the guys spits out his poem... People in the past definitely had spare time; especially in the past few hundred years. Chess, backgammon, mahjong, and dominos are some old board games, and takraw is Extremely old. Cricket was first played about 1700 years ago, and croquet is fairly old as well (1800's).
I'm not sure why ancient peoples didn't think of kicking around a footbag, but I sure wish they would have. Maybe some lost civilization did footbag...
