Re: The Ever-Elusive Stepping Set

Post by shredzilla »

Had my first pain-free session yesterday in about 3 months. I really haven't been playing much at all the past month, just letting my shins heal. It was pretty productive, I was working on flip spinning clipper a lot because I didn't have flip spinning down at all. I ended up getting it down really well toward the end of the session and hit spin clip and duck clip bsos in the same string. That was fun. I'm really looking forward to shredding without pain :)

gotta love that first pain-free session... I was having those for a while, now I'm back in pain ;) but it's not bad. you learn how to keep healthy.

re: stepping set: Watch vasek. he sets straight up and just gets his knee over and out of the way. two seperate motions that flow into each other. and remember, stay loose, stay relaxed. you don't have to launch it to get past your knee. you'll be repeating ripwalks in no time.

Okay, so I was pretty much injured most of the summer with insane shin splints. I know, you're probably thinking 'Oh, I've had those before, it's not that bad. You just play through it.' Well, what happened was I was playing through them for probably 6-8 months, and they just kept getting worse. At the end I felt like they were gonna break with 10 minutes of playing.

Sooo...I just took a break. I'd have a few scattered easy sessions here and there, but really stayed off of it for a good 2 months. Then like about a week ago during my second session back after being healed up, I hurt my back landing wrong on dive>duck>rpt. Yayz! Anyway, that healed, and today was the first session back from that, and basically the 3rd session back from the killer shins.

Had a great session today. Felt really in control of the bag. Started off by hitting a new move, terrage bs, almost bsos. Then just had some shred, hit some paradons midstring. Hit my usual stuff like duck pdx mir bsos, stuff like that. Hit spin clip>rpt on both sides today, that was pretty huge cuz I've been skoolin the heck out of spins. And of course, a bunch of nice 15-20 contact strings with variety.

Anyway, I'm pretty stoked. I was in sort of a footbag depression, and I really needed this session to come through. I'm psyched about terrage, and I think double down and DATW moves are gonna be a big part of my game in the future. They're fun for me, they're low impact, and I seem to pick them up fairly easily compared with other concepts.

Wow it's been a YEAR since my last post...Well I guess I can make a blog post because my game feels like it's going fairly well lately. I took some time off cuz I moved back to DC, and had to get settled in. San D was awesome, but man I don't see how people can afford to live there. DC's just as expensive, except there are JOBS here lol. Kicking with Richie and Tony was awesome though, and Richie dramatically improved my game. Jason was fun to kick with the few times I did as well. His style is so crazy to watch up close.

Anyway, the past couple sessions have been decent. Right now I'm doing a LOT of fundamental drill work, and then having fun going for harder moves/drills. My run length was getting really bad for a while, flip illusion wasn't super solid, and my left footed butter is just horrible, so stuff like that I'm really trying to strengthen. Highlights from both days:

30+ contacts tiltless
15+ contacts guiltless
legover>illusion>rpt 10 contacts
legover>mirage>rpt 30 contacts
Woot!
infin>ripwalk>osis>rpt
butter>blizz>rpt
butter>blur>rpt
duck clip>spin clip>rpt
frigidosis>spin clip>rpt

infinity>rpt 16 contacts
- new record, consec moves have always been a weakness for me
toe blender strong - new move
pdx blender strong - new move
flip phoenix - pixie ducking is getting way easier lately
phoenix rake - new move, first 6 add Woot! (okay, I add hunted. I need at least ONE 6! :P)
pixie whirl flip a few times, couldn't nail it bsos though for some reason.
mobius my favorite move, I wish I didn't make it so hard. That set has to be perfect it seems.

That's about it as far as major highlights. Other than that, I've been enjoying working on DLOs and Eggs a LOT. I've been hitting smog, pig, pdx egg, pdx dlo a bunch, those are some favorite moves too. Schooling blender today was cool but I kinda popped? my knee in doing so, so I may stay away from that for a while lol. It didn't seem to mess up my knee though which I'm thankful for. Thanks for reading.

Welcome back.

Props on the 6er :P even if it was a little addhunty. Mobius is way cooler. Hopefully see somethin' from you on the online comps.

I like those drills, glad to see you are still doing the frigidosis stuff. And spin > duck > RPT is awesome. Try spinning-ducking some time. Alls you gots to do is spin halfway and spot the bag, start to duck and then finish the spin. It's a simple concept, just hard to get your brain and body to cooperate.

Okay been a while since the last blog post, and I'm very rusty. I haven't been kicking much at all since NYFA jam, which was about 3 months ago. This was due to lack of shred spot. But since Ken's moved here for the semester, and we're having semi-regular sessions, I'm kicking a LOT more now, about 4 times a week, and trying to build my game back to where it was and beyond.

I also got a new place and don't have much furniture so I've been testing out sessions here. The floors in this building are amazingly thick, I haven't heard a single step from my upstairs neighbor so I'm hoping it won't be an issue. If it is, I'll obviously stop right away.

Despite all this, I've been brushing off the rust quite nicely. My first session back was one with Ken and Adrienne and I couldn't hit more than 5 contacts and stuff like clipper was hard. Every session I'm getting a little better and closer to where I was, and I'd say my solo sessions today and yesterday are reflecting that. Nothing super 'groundbreaking' lol, but here are some highlights:

 FS Blur! First time, inspired by Johnny. I honestly don't think I hit it bs, I footed it a bunch on flip and it's pretty easy on strong. Should be able to bsos it soon.
 Other pogo moves such as legover, pickup, ss mirage. I really want full symp stepping mirage.
 Hit Fudge, Fairy Muted Clipper, and Flip Fairy is starting to form! Also inspired by Johnny. I hit some other fun fairy moves that I've already hit before like my favorite which is Fear.
 Pixie SS Whirl Almost got it flip

Most of the other 'highlights' are stuff I used to do before, that I'm sort of catching up on like spinning, zooming and stuff like that. My (guiltless) run length is back down to a low number of contacts on average. Need to get back to where I was which was around 10-15, and then 20+ for long runs. And then beyond that.

So I guess I just needed to blog cuz I'm getting back into it more regularly, and I'm pretty excited about where my game will go.

 Last minute update: 35 contacts tiltless! Woot! I think I'm going to cool down every session with trying to break my tiltless record. It was previously around 30 which also isn't very high. That should boost my guiltless contacts some too I bet.

Quick blog post just cuz I want to keep up with this. Kicked with ken today and had another decent maintenance and endurance building session. We both came into the session feeling sluggish and did suprisingly well in spite of that. Hit flip pdx drifter which I told ken I hadn't hit before but thinking about it now I'm pretty sure I have. The cool thing is I hit it like first or second try. Also hit mobious which took quite a bit more tries, but it was neat cuz ken was trying for marius and it took him a bunch, kept footing it, but he finally sealed it and then I sealed my mobius shortly after. Overall I think ken and I have good 'shred chemistry?' That sounds like a terrible articulation of what I mean but we just seem to feed off of each other well and I think that's important for people who kick together semi regularly.

I hit a few longish runs, dlo bsos and I wanna say somethin else bsos but I can't think of it right now. Edit: I remember now, ripwalk>ripwalk bsos. That was great, ripwalk to any blurry move is very tough for me, so it was cool to do it from both sides within a run. We didn't get to end with the tiltless long runs because some guys from his dorm came in and ken gave a quick demo. Overall we had a really positive session all things considered.

Wow 3 blog posts in 3 days! 'Ol zillz must be gettin serious again! lol..

Well today I ran into an old friend. This guy was actually the first guy that told me about footbag and demonstrated the motion for mirage. I was around 19 or 20, and he and I used to hackysack every day in Dupont Circle park. Back then there were usually anywhere from 5 to 10 hackers every day in the circle. We were really serious about it and sometimes on weekends I would hack for like 8 hours straight. I was around 119 lbs back then too!

Moving on...So one day Dashel comes up to me and says 'Hey man, I've been reading up about this advanced form of hackysack called 'foobag.' And he showed me the move. But at the time I was kind of a pothead rebellious type, so I just shrugged it off as being silly or putting too much into just hackysack. I never saw Dashel again.

Then one day I saw footbag again, but I was much older basically about 10 years later, and a lot wiser than the kid I used to be (no longer a pothead or rebellious lol). I fell in love with the sport upon seeing it with those fresh eyes. Now I've been playing for about 2 1/2 years and I'm at a pretty strong level, guiltless, and loving every second I can spend shredding and hitting sick moves.

Today's session with dashel was cool. He has a gym membership and he had a guest pass left on his account, so we were able to use one of the studios. Floor was great, this really hard rubber. I didn't hit anything crazy, a few longish guiltless runs, a few tripless combos, and cooled down with some tiltless and legover>mirage>rpt x 30 contacts.

I'm pretty excited about this footbag year though. I feel like after the break I had I just need to keep up with endurance training, as well as drilling fundamental concepts and I should be able to put together a nice game this year.

This week has been pretty bad health-wise. I was pretty sick all of Sunday and part of Monday, but it's been tough to recover. I almost called Ken to cancel our session today, but I wanted to show my commitment to footbag mostly to myself.

Oddly enough, Ken was somewhat sick as well, so the session was basically hang out and talk and shred a little bit. I couldn't hit very much, but I had a few decent attempts at cool combos, hit flip torque and should have bsos'd it, uh what else..oh I footed ps whirl and really had some awesome attempts at it which makes me think that it'll become a strong move for me this year which would really make me happy. Ken's like the ps whirl ninja so I feel really good about it this year.

Ended the session with a real power run that included both whirls, ripwalk, duck clip>duck pdx mir, pdx illusion, pdx mir...probably a pixie move in there somewhere. It wasn't like a shockingly good or long run, but to be able to muscle through it while feeling crappy and having zero endurance, I felt kinda proud about the effort, and Ken did too.

It was a 'can't wait til next session' sesh. I'm gonna have probably 2 solo sessions this weekend and that should really warm me up for my session with Ken Monday or Tuesday. Ken actually played like a beast today despite not feeling great. You probably know that already from reading his blog. Neither of us had any really long runs, he probably had maybe 3 or 4 long ones which is low for him. But the combos and a couple of the runs were just amazing. It's a LOT of fun watching and shredding with him. Don't be jealous :P

Anyway, I need sleep badly. But I also needed to blog. Night night.

For some reason, the fact that you posted in the "old players unite" thread, and that you're kicking with someone I know well (Ken) made me suddenly invested in your blog. Just wanted to let you know someone else is reading besides those that have posted lately in here.

Wow, someone posted besides me. Thanks Bob, that's really nice of you!

Okay so there's a pretty obvious reason I haven't posted since last time. Apparently that session with Ken was a horrible idea because my body hadn't recovered from being sick the previous weekend. I ended up getting MORE sick than I was before, and having a pretty high fever for 4 days. Yuck.

So I basically spent the week after that delirious and in bed. Not fun at ALL. The funny thing is I kept thinking of how badly I wanted to play again. MODIFIED kept me going in that regard honestly. I surfed modified, read blogs, caught up on some vids I hadn't seen, and just reading about footbag helped me cope with not playing. Pretty cool.

So, I haven't played since a week before yesterday. I went back to work Wednesday, but it's been tough, so I usually just come home and sleep. Oh, Dashel moved into my building oddly enough lol. I live in this crazy huge building with 1200 apartments, it has a restaurant/bar and grocery store n stuff. So as a little celebration we went to the bar and played pool and ate 25 cent wings which were great. We played doubles against these two El Salvadorian guys and beat them every single game. We were both playing insanely well. I don't even play pool anymore and I was making shots like I used to like crazy bank shots that were making people think I was on tour or somethin lol.

Oh and I got my Waylan bag. SO SICK. I love it. It's very different from how I like to stitch my own bags, but it's still great. I like to have a ton of gather in my bags so that when they break in all the panels are super puffy and they fill up with air when the bag goes in the air. But mine do take a pretty long time to become choice. This was kinda like my old style where it's pretty close to choice out of the bag, which is fine. Oh, it's blue with animal print pents - awesome!

So I talked to Ken, we were supposed to have tentative shred plans Wednesday and I told him that it would be foolish for me to make the same mistake and shred hard so soon after being sick. So, we decided to hold off til the weekend, although he had a shred with Adrienne.

I didn't plan on shredding until at least Saturday, but I cheated and snuck in a TINY session last night only because I was itching so bad to try out my new bag. It was literally like 15 minutes because I wasn't about to wear my body down, but I hit flip Tomahawk! Woo-oot!! That was exciting. I can't WAIT til the next real session, I'm just so pumped about my game this year. It's a weird feeling. It's like I can SEE my potential in my head, and I want to make that vision turn into awesome shred.

Oh I stitched a bag too, so at least I got somethin done while I was sick. It's a pretty neat bipolar pattern with blue and yellow, but I guess this yellow that I have pills pretty bad, so oh well. I'm just gonna use it as a warm up bag probably. I have another really cool idea for a bag, so I'm gonna start cuttin panels for that one soon. Alright, that's probably it for blog catch-up. Stay tooned for an epic "First real shred back from the dead" write up this weekend. PEACE!

DUde I am stoked to hear you are getting back into stitching. My old Zilla bag was TEH SEX until some hacky-doofus toe scuffed it to hell. So you've an open offer to stitch another bag for me if you feel like it (and I'll pay you of course duh).

Flip tomahawk is huge!

I want a C-Fan + C-Millz video one of these days. TOebius, Doooo it!

Hope you fully recover and we can start seeing some more shred highlights. Happy Friday, have a good weekend.

Hey, that's one of the things that caused me to stop kicking for 3 months. That thing's addictive!!

So another light session today. This one was pretty standard in length, but I kept it casual and worked on some of my fringe concepts. Highlights:

 Spinning Gyro Toe BS NEW! FUN! :D
 Ducking Gyro Clipper BS NEW! (Strong one was kinda pulled, almost like a ducking osis with no plant. But I couldn't get it any more gyro-like, probably because strong ducking osis is such a dominant move for me.)
 DLO BSOS - This isn't all that difficult, but during my break my flip DLO apparently went to crap.
 9 Contacts of PLO>RPT - Almost 10...I'm gonna keep up with this drill, it's pretty important.
 Spinning Clipper>RPT BS - Flip was TOUGH. Somehow my strong spin became my flip, very odd.

Cooled down with tiltless peppered with 3s and had a 29 contact run the first try, and a 37 contact run the second try which is my new record. I feel fairly warmed up for tomorrow if Ken and I decide to kick.

Quick blog post, shred with Ken today. Sorry for the obnoxious blog title haha.

It was that first 'real' session back, but it was basically us joking around most of the time, and neither one of us got real warm. But Ken had me watch his routine for our tournament in 3 weeks, and he hit it dropless! It was a great routine too, a lot of cool moves and choreography. Onto the (very brief) highlights list:

 Witchdoctor (atomic symp mir) NEW!
 Conniption City (quantum symp mir) NEW!
 Another spin-duck clip and Ken checked for cleanliness. It started off a tad high on the head, but came down pretty tight. Overall it wasn't terrible, and I hit some better ones the other day, but it's nice that I could hit it fairly well on command. I'm looking forward to really schooling that move heavy.

That's it. Nothing too major this time, it was kind of a 'cool' session that never really got too intense. Still, I'm pumped about the new moves and getting back in rhythm.

Oh I remembered one other quick highlight, dynos a bunch. lol. My strong dyno's gettin awesome. Expect a dyno>torque link in the next highlights. Maybe repeat?

Had a decent albeit short session with Ken and Adrienne today, because Ken was short on time. Adrienne played pretty well, as did Ken. I felt I played pretty well today, hit some new 444s, and I felt I just had a lot more control overall, especially with stepping and blurry stuff. Hit atom>dim>rip, dim>rip>bliz, dim>rip>rip from both sides, stuff like that. A couple of longish runs again.

I guess no super amazing highlights but just felt really good with the bag overall today. I didn't get the dyno>torque highlight I wanted either (though it was pretty close every time, should get it next time), but managed a pdx whirl>dyno first try, can't remember if it was sealed or not, I think I may have dropped on the catch, but that combo felt really easy for me, so maybe I'll be able to work that into future stuff. Again, walking away from today's session left me most pleased about my tripless links and overall control with blurry moves.
