I think it's funny that some people think theres 8 planets in our system, while some think there's 10 and/or 11.

Yeah. After taking two classes of astronomy, I kind of adopted the idea that Pluto is not a planet either. It is supposedly a comet from the Kupier Belt...because of it's size, the fact that it was solid, and it's orbit. There may have been more, but it's been a while.

I've been familiar about the requirements to be a planet, and Pluto just missed those requirements. The other day, my mom told me that they changed the requirements, and Pluto was back in, and they discovered a new planet!? Or added a new one? I don't know. She watches the news a lot. I don't.

They had a big meeting of astronomers from all over the world and voted in some definitions for what a planet is. There was a proposal that would have extended the number of planets to 11 or 12 and another one to reduce it to 8 (ie get rid of pluto). It looks like the reducing it to 8 lobby won, but it's all political.

I'm pretty happy with 9 planets. Whether something is a planet or not is pretty meaningless. A rose by any other name etc.

It's completely arbitrary defining what a "planet" is. Astronomers can vote on it, but so what? Don't get me wrong, I'm one of few people who loves science and admits to it, but when it comes to this story I don't really care and I don't really think that it's newsworthy. It's like the fact that a tomato is actually a fruit and not a vegetable. It's still just a tomato just like Pluto is still Pluto. Big whoop.

i changed my mind.... pluto shouldn't be a planet

i define a planet as a big asteroid with an atmosphere... and shit in it... pluto has neither... screw pluto and the other 2 asteroidal planet thingies farther in the solar system

...idk...
