I would use ex in that situation. People will assume that it was when you were still dating.**

The only time I would just assume it occured after the break up is if I know you're single and you say "my ex-girlfriend just made me a cd."

Edit: **If that bugs you, say "my girlfriend at the time made me a cd."

I usually do this: If she made me the CD while we were still together but now we're not I would say "my girlfriend at the time made me this CD", which kind of implies she isn't any more.

Yeah, this is exactly what I [would] say. Haha, I actually did have my old girlfriend make me a cd before. Ex just has a bad vibe to it IMO. Although, out of habbit, I still call my old girlfriend just girlfriend, and now I'm probably ranting and will shut up now.
