Sayin Hi. I smell bad, need to take a shower. Ashley gave me a haircut for the 3rd or 4th time. I could have gone home early from work with 15 bucks but I stayed and made 85 then spent 14. Not proactive with getting into shape at all. Hopes are high. Art is on the horizons. I bought a camera online! I'm so lazy. A camera! I want to make good videos. I imagined you playing tiltless. I play tiltless. Actually, I do lots of toe and inside stalls. Whats your major?

Hi Sam, good luck on getting in shape.

Ken- That was a really nice thing to say, thank you very much.

I played footbag yesterday. 25+ tiltless contacts several times really, really easily. I'll try for 35 or so next session. My knee is fine now, but my back gave me some leg pain during the session.

EJ and I started our session at school and strangely enough, the hackers joined our freestyle circle and even diluted it to the level that we couldn't really freestyle anymore (couldn't keep warm from turn to turn). We used freestyle circle etiquette, clockwise rotation, keep the bag as long as you want/can, pass backs, etc,. It surprised me that they joined the circle since circle kickers always get intimidated and leave or just watch. It was neat actually freestyling for these people who I have circle kicked with so much. I know it's lame but when EJ and I were freestyling I loved the attention from the circle kickers. The girl who wants to learn atw (and just lost the new sandbag she hasn't paid me for yet) filmed me on her phone. I like that footbag gives me a social hand up without even trying. I like that whenever I step into a circle people are like, "watch her, she's really good." I know it's a cheap boost of self esteem. It's like an 8th grade girl walking into an 2nd grade class to show off her reading skills. I'll take what I can get, so there.

Ramble ramble, EJ and I went to get dollar-slice pizza near my house, then we went to Capitola to have a real session. It didn't work so well for me, but it was fun and good to kick. EJ hit legover>legover x6 and his first two flip symp. mirages. I tried to teach him how to do a symp. pixie but I think Jeremy is needed for that one. They're only hard to learn because they're confusing if you know symp. mirage. I remember the day I learned them with Jeremy at the Carfaire tennis courts. I felt so silly getting all confused.

I know I want to start getting better than I am right now, but I'm not sure how I want to step it up. My longer tiltless strings include atw, pixies, mirages, legovers, pickups, osis, paradox mirages, butterflies/infinities, and far legovers which are all easy for me. I practice other stuff too, but haven't started to incorporate it into my strings again yet. I guess I should start drilling again. I can't tell how much of this stage is a mental block and how much is physical. I still have back problems/pain and don't feel like doing harder stuff is necessarily a good idea. I can't tell how much of that is true and how much of it is me being overly cautious, and how much is me being lazy. It will be better when there are more scheduled freestyle sessions.

OH YEAH! A few days ago I saw my first wild dolphins! I’ve been here for two years and it was my first time. Jennie has lived here for seven or more years and it was her first time seeing them in the wild too. She saw closer to 30 of them, but by the time I got there I only saw about three of them swimming around, but that’s definitely good enough for me. Since I had a camera, here you go. I didn’t get them on camera very well since they were kind of far away, but it’s better than nothing. Yay!

It was a pretty day at a pretty spot.

There was something else I was going to say the next time I posted about footbag, don't remember what it was now.

Thank you for reading.

This older man at the flea market told me "You're good people, I can tell."

My neighbor a few doors down says his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend was a really good net player who competed. When my neighbor asked what I did on Monday I told him I watched some net and he knew what I was talking about. It's neat, it felt kind of like you think it would feel if footbag was a normal sport or part of the culture.

By the way, I watched net on Monday. I'd rather watch people playing freestyle right now.

to get better at footbag, one needs at least 2 things:
1) a consistent BOP game
2) a variety of tricks that can be hit with consistency

At your current level, you lack a solid BOP game and your variety consists mostly of 2 add tricks and some 3s and 4s.

To improve your BOP and guiltless game, take the first 10-15 already warmed-up minutes of your sessions and practice the following drills:

butterfly>pdx mirage>rpt to 30 contacts
butterfly>infinity>osis>rpt to 30 contacts
osis>pdx mirage>op osis>pdx mirage> rpt to 30 contacts
butterfly>osis>pdx mirage>rpt to 20 contacts
butterfly>pdx illusion>rpt to 14 contacts
pixie clipper>pdx mirage>rpt to 8 contacts

You might get bored of dropping a lot on these drills so if you do, I recommend doing strings of whatever makes you happy. Assuming that you are now hitting easier for you tricks, you should work on your string length and your endurance. Try to keep the bag in the air for at least 1 minute with 3 drops or less (or set your own attainable goal).

To really feel improvement in your game, you need to expand the repertiore of guiltless tricks you have the ability to hit, and the repertiore of guiltless tricks you can hit consistently. I recommend:

learning to duck, learning to spin, learning to whirl, learning to dlo. About 20-30 attempts at each trick every session might be enough to add those tricks to your vocabulary in only a couple of weeks. Or you may choose to work certain tricks M,W,S and other tricks T, TH, and F.

Lastly, you might ask yourself: "What are the guiltless tricks I can hit right now if someone gives me 3 tries to hit them?"

Make a list of these tricks. Then give yourself 2 weeks in which to see if you can add at least 2 tricks to that list.

If you're serious about improving, you have a lot of resources around to help you.

I read that post and thought of you.

34 tiltless 1st try at the end of my 3rd little session tonight. Except for that, I schooled the whole time during the mini-sessions. It was awful. I'm thinking about taking up freestyle bowling instead.

I've become a fan of (some) spammy e-mail texts. This one worth posting in it's entirety; I read the whole thing:

Just to avoid any confusion, no, I'm not down on footbag. I like using the words I use the way I use them. It's going well and I like playing. Ooh, I taped myself tonight and my arms are pretty bad. Even as I thought I was working on them they looked the same. Shucks.

There's no reason for me to lie to people like that.

P.S. My PT has to wait until Oct. 1st because there’s no insurance money until then.

I guess other people are making up for me since I don't use emoticons right now.

Well.

I hadn't been kicking much, just two sessions in two weeks...

Friday Jeremy, Fletcher, EJ and I kicked in Capitola. I wasn't in a good mental space for footbag. I had to push myself really hard to keep kicking while I did, and to stay at the session. I'm glad I did.

Saturday I watched people play net at the middle school. I felt like playing and even went home to get my shoes and short but didn't end up playing. Sometime.

Sunday was a good day. Eric Chang and Eric Something drove from San Jose. Steve Goldberg drove down too. It was Dustin Rhodes first Santa Cruz session as a long-term temporary resident!!! Welcome to the best Central California shred town. Fletcher and I played freestyle but Jeremy and AJ both forgot their freestyle shoes. They played net with Sage, Angel and EJ. I don't remember doing anything worth remembering (ha) in the circle. I do remember getting pummeled by Steve in 2-Square. He used his "new secret move" which led to me getting hit in the face with the bag several times. He also accidentally kicked my leg just below the knee and left a rug burn type boo-boo.

Did she just say boo-boo? Eww.

People sometimes post about who they would want to see play against Steve at 4-Square. My dream team would be Zeke, Daryl, Mathieu Gauthier & Kolo, and Ryan Mulroney.

The day finished with everyone watching net for a while. Fletch and I played a two out of three match of 2-square.

Today is Monday and I played footbag with my boyfriend Fletcher Funk. I worked on pixie set for a little bit. I tried some flip and strong illusions. It's a weird move for me. I don't know why I get a red flag in my brain when I think of myself doing an illusion, like I'm going to randomly fall and break myself really badly. They were okay. I tried some strong whirls but not flip. Strong is really awkward. I feel like in two weeks I'll enjoy footbag like I want to if I keep playing regularly. I don't like my style at all right now. A lot of things are awkward and off balance, and my arms are really annoying me while I'm playing.

2-Square was a fun cool down. Only because I won.

Just kidding.

But I did win.

I have a small cold that getting the best of me right now. Tonight I'm going to watch The Godfather for the first time. Tomorrow is dollar slice Tuesday. It's like a holiday every week. If it weren't for that pizza special, Tuesday would be my least favorite day of the week because I work in the morning until I go to school from 1-9pm. After the long day I usually feel like playing footbag but then I get that pizza in me and I'm done for. The place closes at 10, I have no choice.

Speaking of holidays, I don't know what to dress up as for Halloween and it's getting so close.

Tonight: Session on my deck for the first time. It would have been way too loud if we didn't use Fletch's shred mats.

Fletch and I started then EJ and Jeremy came for the 2nd half of the session. I thought four people would be way cramped but it wasn't bad. We rigged up some lights when it got dark. The lighting still wasn't perfect but a light colored bag made it much better.

I bought a Pepsi for drinking just before and during the session along with drinking a lot of water. My lunch today was huge, free, and very good. I think it helped a ton with how I felt while kicking. Plus I took several breaks to help Jennie with some stuff, so I didn't kick straight through the whole time which would have been too much.

1st half:
32 tiltless
I did a few turns of trying whirl on both sides. Bad, but getting closer.
I tried other individual things:
-dyno
-ripwalk
-sidewalk -sort of.
-blur-couldn't get it.
-plo>plo x3
-gyro clipper
-spinning clipper, can't do flip but I tried
-datw both sides, both directions -didn't hit o-i either side
-symp pixie and mirage, getting a little better

2nd half:
Hit a few blurs on both sides
Far dyno in a string
Hit a few bad looking ps mirages strong side only. Flip couldn't get it's mind around it enough to even switch feet on the ground.
Cool down: tried swirl a bunch both sides.

I felt okay, back acted fine until the end when it was just a little tight. Stretching afterwards definitely helped.

In the few years I've struggled through freestyle I never would have dreamed my name would ever be in the same sentence as Daryl or Ryan. 8) Honestly, you think I have a chance against Steve in 2 square?

Moxie wrote: I do remember getting pummeled by Steve in 2-Square. He used his "new secret move" which led to me getting hit in the face with the bag several times. He also accidentally kicked my leg just below the knee and left a rug burn type boo-boo.
Being the competitive bastard that I am I would try and coerce this secret from you. But that would be neither nice nor fair on my part. Although, should you willingly divulge such information... then that's different.

And what makes me think you would do such a dirty, under-handed and utterly treacherous deed? Well there is the fact that you even mentioned this secret move. It leads me to believe that something deep inside of you is bitter and tormented by the many frustrating losses, the sneering and cheating. At first it starts as a whisper in your mind but in time it grows into the loud pounding drums of war screaming for bloody vengance! It drowns the voices of reason and trust until there is nothing but a vast raging sea of deceit. No longer are you burdened by the shackles of friendship and trust but consumed and feuled by the single minded pursuit for the ultimate goal;

the complete

and utter defeat

of the mighty

Steve

Goldberg.

This is why the mention of his secret weapon is brilliantly hidden in plain sight among the innocent words of your blog. So the the like-minded and cunning may learn to defend against it. And when the dust of battle has cleared and my hand is raised high in victory towards the sun of the new year, a fitting symbol of my reign, you take silent pleasure that all this was your doing. None of it would be if not for you. Amidst the celebration you replay the events in your mind, reveling at how you have masterfully played all the pieces. The drums have ceased, the seas are calm and a smile brightens your face. As sublte as it begain so shall it end.

Knowledge is power.

And knowing is half the battle.

So it turns out, Zeke, my O So Not Ready To Even Begin To Approach Defeating the Master friend, even if you knew my new move, it wouldn't in any way help you in defending against it. :-) Seriously, I wouldn't call it a secret move -- it's just a new move for me in 2-square. Kenny's been doing it in net for years. :-)

Anyway, within a minute of playing me (if you ever have the guts!) you'd discover it and start trying to defeat me with the weakness it uncovers...

Oh shit, it's on. I somehow feel like this was started by my post, and you all know how I feel about starting trouble.

...how much I love it. 3 out of 5 people on my "dream team" being at NYJ is exciting.

Today I kicked with Fletch at Frederick St. Park. It was fairly windy when we started so the shred mats were weighted down by a backpack, two water bottles, a pair of shoes, and a container of motor oil (which I need to get back). I need to eat more fruit and red meat. Yummmm. I had no energy to begin with and that carried through most of the session. At one point I kept dropping on flip atw. Fletch told me to just do a flip datw and I did.

Blur gave me a lot of trouble. I did some illusions (same with last session, forgot to say that)- that didn't go well. Tried gyro mirage and came close on strong side. Did crispy torque for the first time in a long time. I hadn't remembered I could do that with very little twist to my back. I tried drifters which I had decided not to do again... I could hit strong really well, couldn't get flip, but only tried a handful of times. Just wanted to do it, it's a fun move. Ripwalks are still iffy and not consistent.

At the end of the session I was surprised to see that I had tried a lot of the moves I put on my to-do list this morning.

Osis served me well as a bail during strings today. A few good saves were really satisfying for some reason.

Once I was pretty much finished Matt Marks came to the session. Some of you probably met him at the Santa Cruz Invitational. He just moved back to SC and I'm SO excited. He had some good strings which included such moves as mirage, atw, legover, pixie, clipper and maybe pickup? I was done-done with freestyle so he and Fletch kept playing while I went to play net on the grass. EJ and I warmed up. Then I played two games with AJ as my partner. I think we played against Jeremy and AJ then Matt and Fletch. Serving was kind of okay at the beginning but by the end my serve *attempts* were flat out awful. It was fun playing net. I think it might be more fun if I had good net shoes but I don't want to buy ugly shoes, so I don't know if that's going to happen. I would like to practice serves and play a game or two each week.

Edit: I'm putting Steve's name on the confirmed list for NYJ.
