wow, ken how is it that no matter where you go, you always seem to find people to kick with?!? Glad you already have people to play with because i really felt bad for you kicking all by your self in arizona all summer. i was thinking about making a lil weekend fo coming down to visit, but then i ran out of summer and money . horray for ken!

Before, he was almost as far away as possible from my house, but he may end up as near as 2 blocks away if things go well. I can`t believe my luck sometimes.
In other promising news, I discovered a thriving hack scene in Ithaca. I randomly found a hack circle, and joined in. To my great surprise, 2 people had freedom footbag sandbags! The 4 panel ones! Whoa. Even more surprising, was when I suggested we play 4-square, and one guy already knew the rules. Everybody caught on real fast, and we had 3 good games. After playing, I went with them to a hip-hop event downtown, with all you can drink vodka for $7. I have trouble recalling much more... it really was one of the most bizarre, depressing, and surreal nights of my life. And it would never have happened without footbag.
Sorry for the blog neglect, but my internet access is still real spotty, and I am incredibly busy with my new life. I kinda like it this way. But you know I will pop up every now and again to let you know about me and the beanbag.

Wow, awesome footbag day.
The other day when I played with Luis for the first time, I overheard some people talking about a juggling club, so I went over and introduced myself. I got an email from them about an activities fair for freshmen, so today I set up a shred with Luis at the fair, with the hope of maybe getting a couple new names.
I got there early and talked to the juggling club, and when they saw my footbag shirt, the president whipped out his celphone and called.... Pascal Tomacek! There, ya happy Waylon? So yeah, Pascal showed up soon, so I had the pleasure of playing in a 3 man circle for a good chunk of the day. We attracted a lot of attention too, despite not having our own booth. Even so, we got a good 8 email addresses, and one real gung-ho freshman named Brett even played hack with us for a good 45 minutes.
Pascal seems really cool, and also like he'll put in time into making the club work. He played well today, with DATW, ripwalks, a butterfly swirl, and a ducking xbody pincher. Coolness. Luis played well with clippers and mirages, but had to bail early. I just tried to flow all day, so not much in terms of discrete highlights. I was probably most stoked about getting 9 contacts of rubberman again, especially because last time I got 9 I started on weak atom, and this time I got 9 starting on strong atom. So there really is no reason I can't get rubberman x2.
Oh yeah, big news: the Cornell juggling club is having a big juggling festival on November 10-12, with the main day on the 11th. I'm going to contact Jorden and Pete about coming down to do juggling/footbag demos, and overall I think it would be a great excuse to have a footbag jam in Ithaca. So all you Rochester/Montreal/Kingston/NYC cats, this is your first warning. Come welcome me back to the East Coast, I missed you!

Yet another blow dealt to my plan to get interent at my place: my laptop completely died on me. It won't even turn on. Oy... that's gonna hurt me schoolwork wise. But I guess the nice flip of it is that I 've been almost completely off modified for a while, which saves me lots of time.
I haven't been playing too much footbag lately, but I feel excited about the coming year. Already, I have 2 dedicated players who have Lavers and are down to shred more often than not (Luis and Pascal). That's already way more than I had in undergrad. And in other promising news, I've met an undergrad freshman named Brett, who I can totally see becoming a serious shredder. This kid came to the Student Activities Fair with the SOLE goal of finding footbaggers. When the club didn't send out an email announcing our 1st shred, he went online to the facebook looking for Kens and Pascals to try and contact us. Dude is serious. We just need to get him some shoes, but I can see him being down for life with footbag. Very exciting.
Since my last entry, I've put on my g-units twice. I played one night at a juggling meeting by myself, and then we had a bigger meeting yesterday. During my solo shred a couple nights ago, I mostly just had fun playing around. On a whim, I tried rubberman, and got it first try. More accurately, I hit it and kept going, and got either 10 or 11 (most likely 11) contacts of rubberman!
It was just flowing well. I can't wait to hit rubberman x2.
Yesterday's session was with Luis, Pascal, and Brett. We played outside, on one of the most visible spots on campus with the goal of drawing in a bit more interest. Because of this, I didn't really go for much hard stuff, but instead went for long runs which would get attention from crowds. We also played 4square for a good long time. Probably at least 5 games total, each one up to 10 points. Pascal is sneaky, but Brett is learning fast too.
Highlights:

*tomahawk x2, as a tribute to Pascal (his last name is Tomacek)

I've been pretty studious and productive since getting to grad school. I have to say it feels really good to be busy again. Sometimes I think "man, I have so much work to do!" or "I don't know what classes to take!" and I catch myself, because I'm not REALLY complaining. I love the fact that I am busy again. Beats the hell out of being alone and unemployed in a desert.
Had a real physical day yesterday. I played two-hand touch football for a while, and then played like 2 hours of pickup basketball. Footballs are shaped super weird. I tried hacking one (in my basketball shoes), and I managed to get 14 kicks before a drop, which felt pretty good. Football seemed pretty easy to me physically. It's like, 10 second bursts of running, followed by long stretches of rest-time as you get settled on the next play. Totally different from basketball, or even footbag.
Pick-up basketball was a joy. I made lots of jump shots, and definitely led the game in assists. It felt so good to play something I'm good at, especially after football. The one bad spot of b-ball was getting kneed in my quad, which has resulted in a massive limp. Walking is still notably painful today, which means no footbag until at least Thursday probably. We should have another footbag club meeting on friday, which I'd like to be healed for, but even if I'm not, I can always play 4 square.
In bad news, it sounds like Kickass2 has been moved to the weekend of my sister's wedding, which means I can't go. The way things were shaping up at grad school, and the fact that Pascal has a car, meant that I was looking at a 75% chance of attending had it been the other dates.
Tip of the day: one step at a time.

so since you can't make kickass, i guess there's no point in saying "come to hackrifice instead!" considering it's farther away and the same weekend.
being busy is both a blessing and a curse, because there are always those days when there's nothing you'd rather do than sit on your ass, read a book and eat chips. but at the same time, you aren't stuck on your ass with nothing to do but read a book and eat chips. i'm back to school now as well, and i'm really glad to be back to it and working towards a goal, but i can already feel the tension and stress building up on me. and it's only been 1 day

That quad injury was pretty intense, but thankfully it looks like I'm mostly over it. I think the hilliness of this campus delayed my recovery more than anything. I'm walking without a limp, but I'm not quite to the point where I can freestyle again. The fact that my computer is broken means I can't watch footbag vids anymore. I miss watching the one of takumi and me from over the summer, as well as Mathieu's RJD2 remake of "the Horror," with all the crazy LaRoche footage.
Last night I went to the juggling club and worked on juggling clubs (pins). It was fun, but whenever I do something that I suck at, I always like to play some footbag later to bring my confidence back up. Unfortunately I couldn't yesterday, but I was stoked to see that Luis and Pascal made it out to play some. I gave them some pointers which I think helped them out some, so I derived some vicarious footbag pleasure through that. Luis and Pascal both seem real cool, which makes me feel real lucky. Its far from the first time that I've moved someplace new, and found cool people thanks to footbag.
Tonight I will try to play some light pick up basketball, with the goal of not re-injuring my legs. If the results are encouraging, I will try to play some light footbag tomorrow. I think it could be a good excuse to work on my dexless, or maybe do what I did my 2nd day in Osaka, and play completely shuffle-free all day.
I'm still kinda down about missing KickASS2. A tourney so near me, and I even had a ride set up! Seriously, if it were anything other than a funeral or a wedding, I would be there.
I should start working on making footbag an attractive event at the Cornell Juggling festival. Ithaca is so centrally located relative to so many scenes, it could really be a perfect excuse for a varied jam. Montreal, NYC, Ottawa, and Rochester are all near enough that I'd be disappointed if at least one person from each scene didn't make it. Gotta look into accomodations and sponsors (and not having a computer makes this hard), but I think it could be a real fun event. I'm thinking Rippin Run, Shred30, and Circle Comp.

Recently in this year's Funtastiks, I've met up with Taishi. It seems that he is accompanied with Ben Roscoe ever since his visit to the Western Hemisphere. Ben and I were literally convinced that he should make a visit to your footbag event at the Cornell Juggling Festival. I believe Taishi felt that way as well, and the three of us were very ecstatic about the idea.
My prediction for his visit will be almost too surreal. He's such a great shredder and a very kind person to meet. Just to have two great players representing Japan and meeting up for footbag at this event will be amazing.

Whoa... 30,000 views? That's...whoa.
Life has been aight. It's always tough moving somewhere new and starting all over. It's exciting, and meeting lots of new people is fun, but there's always that clawing loneliness at the back of it all, until you forge those new, deep friendships. Thankfully, my quad injury has healed up enough that I was able to play with the footbag club yesterday. I've always loved the comfort that footbag gives me. Even during the roughest times of my life, footbag has been there as a balancing force, helping me center myself.
The Cornell Footbag club. It's growing pretty well, and already it's been more successful than the club i tried to get going at Brown University. The mascot of Cornell is a bear, so our club name is "Bear Feet." So far the hard core of the club consists of Luis, Pascal, a freshman named Brett, and myself. There are 3 other guys who come, who could either turn into shredders, or may drop out later on. But Brett looks damn serious, and I would be amazed if he doesn't stick with it for the next 4 years. I think he's out buying Lavers today, which I am very excited about.
The weather was perfect yesterday. 80 degrees, sunny. Tanktop weather. My quad was feeling good, but I still wore my baggiest jersey (JKidd) and my baggy grey shorts in order to limit how hard I could push myself. I mostly stuck to downtime tricks, which was fun. But really, ANY tricks at all would have been fun for me, since I missed playing so much.
One big danger our club needs to avoid, is becoming a 4square club instead of a footbag club. We all have so much fun playing 4square, that we have had sessions where we just end up playing 4square all the time, and never teach/practice tricks. We need to be careful about that. I think 4 square is a great tool for attracting new members, and for bonding, both which are important. At one point we had a 7 person game of 4 square going on, which is pretty good. Brett has only played like 2 days, but already is picking up lots of crafty techniques from Pascal and me. Hopefully we can start getting 2 or 3 shreds a week, and use some of them for 4 square, and others be more focussed on teaching.
I really needed yesterday. Just all the laughing and fun of playing. I didn't do any work, and I'm off to a bad start today too, but I think I just needed it. As I mentioned in my last post, I feel real happy and lucky I'm meeting good people through footbag again. I miss my Japanese scene (Takumi apparently hit ripstein bsos, and cheese processor recently!) a lot, but if I can help create/spread a footbag scene somewhere else, I really should do that. I think it will be fun.

Weather was awesomeness again yesterday, so I decided to try and get a last minute session together. To my very happy surprise, everything worked out perfectly, and within an hour there were 4 members of the Cornell Footbag Club (the official name is in flux, it seems like the front-running candidates are: "Bear Feet," or "Ken is wack.") in downtown Ithaca attracting non-Cornellians to join our club.

the way you seem to be able to create these new scenes most places you go is no less than amazing.
This Brett guy does sound very serious. I can imagine he will get really good, really quickly.

I kinda feel like Ed Norton in Fight Club, where he wakes up in different cities all the time disoriented because of his business trips. My schedule here is nuts: on Mondays and Wednesdays I have a class at 8 am, and a class at 7 pm. It's rough. But I'm finding some nice positives too, like a free dinner in the dining halls every Tuesday night, because there's a Japanese language group and I speak Japanese. So there IS such thing as a free lunch.
Footbag scenes and me... I've definitely been pretty lucky, but you also would be amazed at the returns you get by doing very VERY basic recruiting techniques. I didn't have a booth at the activities fair, but I went there with a piece of paper, shredded, and got a bunch of names from that. Same with playing downtown. You just need to pay a little less attention to your game, and always keep an eye out to see who's watching.
So in my last entry, I was gonna say that the downtown shred was great for 2 reasons:
1. We got some local interest, and told the dudes when and where we play. We also got some emails too. I think it'd be great if we get non-Cornell people to join the club. Oh yeah, 2 guys who are making some website about creative, alternative cool stuff also approached me, cause they want to put me on their site, doing a 30 second demo. Exposure is always good, especially to non-footbag markets, so I hope this generates even more interest in the club.
2. We actually shredded, instead of playing 4square. 4square is fun, but we can all stand to work on our games (Luis has only been playing like 3 months, and Brett JUST got Lavers), so it was nice to get a chance to do that.
We're gonna have another small juggling meeting tonight, so hopefully I can rest up before then.

Alright! Last night's club meeting went great. I showed up a little early, so nobody from the juggling or footbag clubs was there. I borrowed a basketball from some random dudes, and when Pascal arrived with his girlfriend, we recruited the first juggler to arrive to play a 2 on 2 game. It was me and Pascal's girlfriend Diane, vs. Pascal and the juggler. This little game was likely the highlight of my day. Diane and I made a good team, getting at least one assist in each direction, and playing solid D. On a personal level, I was just really stoked to execute a perfect "come to papa" (off the backboard to myself pass) which froze everybody and allowed me to score. Good times.
People started to show after a while, and I was VERY pleasantly surprised at the turnout. All told, we had 7 players at our meeting! Not bad, considering I sent out the email that very morning. Even if I didn't make such late notice, 7 players on a weeknight is fantastic.
I was real happy to see that Brett had bought leather lavers, and had obviously been practicing. He hit ATW o-in for his first time, and then hit it on flip too! So now he's hit all 4 ATW variants. I'm excited too, because he isn't rushing to learn lots of new tricks, and is still really making a point to learn proper form on his toe stalls. Fantastic progress. At the end of the session I used an exacto knife to mod his shoes. Modding g-units is a lot easier than leather lavers, but I did a decent job on the insteps. I only had time to mod his left toe, but that's probably good, cause that's his weaker toe, and maybe this will motivate him to skool it some more. I'll finish up the mods at Friday's meeting.
The other new guys all had solid hack skills. One of them, Nick, could even do around 10 alternating toe stalls, albeit with big pauses after each stall. He won our only game of 4square, and overall seemed real interested in learning. I have high hopes for the club. To our credit, we only played one game of 4 square, and spent the rest of the time teaching basics. Pascal and Luis also had some good new stuff. Pascal hit his first blurs ever, and they looked good. Luis is getting the hang of "hopping style" legovers. Brett also hit them both sides for the first time too. Exciting to see such good quick progress on everybody's part.
As for me... I didn't really play too much, since I spent most of my time teaching basics. I did hit rubberman. Uh...I feel like I had one real good string, but that was about it. Whatever. I had my months in Arizona playing by myself where I improved. I much prefer being in my current situation where I can help others get good, and eventually get a scene so I can have a regular, big-ish shred circle to play with all the time.

Hey ken, im applying to Ithaca college and will most likely be going down there at some point to check out the campus and town. ill probably be staying the night because i have a couple friends who go there. We should arrange a sess if your up for it and you have time. ill let you know ahead of time about the dates.
