In less good news, I hurt myself again yesterday playing basketball. I got kneed in the quad AGAIN (left one this time), and I got a super nasty blister on the left foot. Oh yeah, and footbag club is today.

Wow, that is truly exciting news! Man, if you DID end up at IC, that'd mean next year would be crazy amounts of shred. Let me know when you plan on visiting, and I'll get the local club all stoked for it.

Crap timing for sure. I think the reason I'm so prone to injury in basketball, is that I'm still adjusting to how physically Americans play (compared to Japanese), and also due to my style of play (running off/setting lots of screens, penetrating and kicking out when the defense collapses, etc). For the sake of the footbag club, and for my ability to walk to classes, I think I will give up basketball for a while, or only play when it's with people who suck or are little.

Club meeting yesterday was great. I was unable to freestyle since I was still recovering from injuries, but there was a good turnout, lots of learning, and then some 4square.
I was particularly happy to have a new member (Jefferson) come by, and hop in the 4square game. It's so weird to me that members who first learned the game less than 2 weeks ago (Brett, Ben) are already such sharks at it. Brett won the first 2 games, and almost took the third one too, before I decided (as a point of personal dignity) to stop him. I was just happy I was able to play 4square.
There was some good trick learning too. Nick strikes me as potentially getting real good. He hit his first legovers and ATWs, and seems real receptive to advice on improving. I hope he gets Lavers/G-Units soon. Pascal asked me for tips on DLO and drifter, and surprised both of us by hitting flip toe DLO first try when using my "switch your feet faster" advice. He also hit his first toe drifters on either side. I definitely got a vicarious high off that.
I think the biggest highlight of the shred for me was at the end when it began raining. We were all tired already, and had already played 2 games of 4 square, but despite the rain, everybody stuck around to finish off the last game. How hardcore is that? I'm definitely very excited about this group.

Wow, the irony of that last post. I'm totally swamped with work now, and its really tough. The worst part of it all, is that the weather has been almost perfect lately, which makes it that much more crushing spending all my time studying indoors. If it were snowing outside, I would feel less bad about spending all day inside.
In good news, my legs have almost totally healed up. Definitely excited about this, because footbag is probably my best way of dealing with stress. It's also nice to be able to walk to places easily.
Related to this, I have also decided to give up basketball until the Cornell Juggling Festival is over. I've been tapped to perform at the big show on Saturday night, which means I will be in a show with some of the best jugglers in the World. I'm determined not to embarass myself, which means there is no way I am gonna risk getting injured before then.
I managed to sneak in a light session on Sunday with Luis. Yeah, I had work, but mentally I needed it. It ended up only being a 2-man session, but that actually was really good. When I first met Luis, I was teaching him a lot, giving him lots of advice, etc. But when total newbies like Brett and Nick showed interest in the sport, I really shifted my focus to teaching them, partially at the price of neglecting Luis. So having a two-man session with him was great; I think we made a lot of progress.
Personally for me, it just felt great to play again. I injured myself on Thursday night, so it wasn't that long a hiatus, but it felt it. I played in baggy equipment, but I still managed to hit rubberman once (starting on legbeater).
Oh, in other cool news, I watched "Bringing Out the Shred" the other day, and it was real good. I'm gonna write up a review soon, once I watch it again.
OK, gotta get back to work.

Feeling pretty good footbag-wise. There's a bit of comfort in knowing I won't injure myself playing basketball anymore, and with the Juggling show coming up in November, I feel like I once again have a reason to get serious about footbag. I really want to get my game on point, so I can represent footbag well at the show, and so I can play well when everybody comes to town.
Last night the club met, which was fun as usual. I cut out the remaining toe of Brett's lavers, a new guy showed up, we played some fun foursquare, and Luis and Brett played real well. Brett is making excellent progress. I saw him get ATW i-o to ATW o-i on both sides. He also got like 4 legovers in a row. I can see him getting drills like ATW-lo repeat soon. Luis had lots of strings with good variety. His mirages have definitely improved since our last session.
For me personally, yesterday's shred was fun but a bit frustrating. I feel like I haven't played seriously in at least 3 weeks, and so I've definitely lost a good bit of consistency. Even my breathing didn't feel right. But that should be expected. Hopefully I can play more regularly and get back to where I want to be. The only real highlight for me was hitting blizzard-atom smasher-legbeater repeat.
I'm looking forward to Bostown this weekend. I have a feeling Pete Bowler is a lot better than when we played at Rochester, so it should be interesting to see what his game looks like now.

Wow, fantastic weekend. School has been fun so far, but it was definitely starting to get a bit stressful. I've been meeting lots of new peoples, but its still too early for any of my new friendships to have truly blossomed. That's one reason why my weekend trip to Boston was so good; I got to get away from my grad school environment, and I got to hang out with some of my best friends from college. I feel re-invigorated now, ready to hit the books again and help expand the Ithaca shred scene.
Another big plus of the weekend was that I got in a good shred with Pete Bowler. I feel like I hadn't gotten in a serious shred in a while... probably not since the activities fair 3 weeks ago. Part of that was due to injuries (which I hopefully wont have to worry about now that I'm taking a break from bball), part was due to spending lots of time teaching basics to new club members, and part was due to simply being busy with school. So it really felt wonderful to have a shred where I could just play for myself and push my game again.
It was also really sweet playing with Pete. Playing with others, especially people you rarely play with, definitely helps me play better. Just the whole feeding off each other's energy thing really raises you that extra notch. It also helped that Pete played so well. You could tell he spent the 10 months since Rochester productively. As for myself, I thought I played OK. I'm still working on getting my stamina back, and a lot of times I feel like I'm not breathing as well as I used to. But hopefully that will come back to me once I start playing more regularly.
Pete highlights:
*good stepping drills. ripwalk-sidewalk repeat was very clean and easy. I was much more impressed by:
*crispy whirl-crispy drifter repeat.
*matador-pdx blender for his first time.
*pdx blender to blur!
I gave Pete a few general tips on various concepts, which I hope will help him out in the future. I know how hard it can be to play by yourself most of the time.
As for me, I didn't hit anything I felt was especially highlight-worthy. I spent a lot of time trying to hit fog rubberman, and came achingly close a bunch of times. Eh, here's my "highlights" just for the hell of it:
*darkwalk-stepping blender
*flurry-pixie torque
*a run with vortex and a toebius
*a run with fog and flurry bsos, dropped trying to bsos tomahawk too.
*atomic blender, with diving butterfly-torque-pdx drifter bsos in the seal
*fog-atom-leg-fog-atom-drop at least 3 times.
I'm gonna try and start playing a few times a week. I'll let you know how it goes.

The Cornell footbag club normally meets Wednesday nights and Friday afternoons, but last Friday I was in Boston and Pascal didn't go either, so we decided to get in a bonus session this week and played last night. It was real last second, so only Pascal, Luis, Brett and I were there. I asked Luis about Friday's meeting, and he said that something like 10 people showed, which is awesome. Luis did a real clever thing by finding everybody at Cornell on "facebook" who had footbag listed as a hobby. There were only 5 of them, but already 2 have shown up to our meetings. Totally paid off.
Last night's session was... comforting? I dunno, I kinda felt like I wasn't officially home until I played with the club. That's probably a good thing. Our usual spot was closed, so instead we played on some basketball courts. Pascal proposed a game the club at Columbia does, which is similar to Horse. I personally didn't get into it very much, but it seemed to really help Brett by providing him with concrete challenges. Like, the structure of the game seemed to help him develop. The highlight of the game for me was when I challenged myself to just hit a 20 string, and I got a run with 35 contacts, including ps whirl bsos and a pdx blender. I could have kept going, but my 36th contact was "the," so I just stopped. I'd definitely say the highlight of the game, or probably the whole session, was Brett hitting clipper for his first time... and then hitting flip for his first time too! Such a milestone. Oh, I also got 5 contacts of fog rubberman again, on 2 or 3 occasions. I really need to nail that next time just to get it off my mind.
We finished off the session with 2 real intense games of 4square. We played in a cramped hallway, so we ruled that you could play off of the walls, provided the bag hit above a certain line. It was like a cage match. Both games were super close and lots of fun; I definitely think 4square is the ideal way to finish a session.
Oh, and in other big news: I'll be in NYC on Saturday. Weather, don't fail me now!

I'll be in KICKASS by then.
I can't wait for November!!! I found a really intense juggler that goes to my school that seems to be interested in the Cornell Juggling Convention! I'll see you then!

Thanks for the cool photo Zach. Man, CSS feels like it was years ago.
Last night's Footbag club meeting went really really well. We had a turnout of 7 players (not bad for the week before prelim exams): Bill, Andy, Nick, Pascal, Brett, Luis, and me. We kicked off the session with a foursquare game, then worked on teaching tricks and shredding. OUr 4square skill levels are still varied, so I find myself playing against some people really hard (Pascal and Brett) and playing more easily against others. This sometimes has bad consequences, as I'll focus so much on getting Brett out, that I end up racking up a ton of points for whoever is serving.
The club members continue to make good progress. Nick has obviously been skooling his toe stalls, and now does them with a rhythm, instead of pausing after each one. Seems minor, but I really believe its key to learn toe stalls 100% perfectly, since everything else builds from there. Andy hit a couple nice clippers, and even a fairy set. We really need to get him Lavers, since he has the natural flexibility to get real good if he wants to. His legs and way of moving them remind me of Nick Landes. Brett continues to impress me. All 4 ATWs look more consistent, and he's also starting to get clipper on one side. He also hit 6 legovers in a row on two separate occasions.
I tried to divide my time 60-40 between shredding and teaching, and probably ended up more on the 70ish-30ish side. I feel my touch is returning a bit. I got Pascal to count my contacts on each run, which was a good reality check (my runs aren't as long as I thought/hoped), and motivated me to try a bit harder. I think if I continue to get 3 sessions a week in, I should be in good shape for the Nov 10-12 weekend, when we host a tourney. The biggest personal shred highlight of the session was a 16 contact string, that began with: fog-atom smasher-legbeater... repeat!
Whoo! Fog rubberman sealed with 10 more tricks! It wasn't my first time (I'd hit it in Tokyo this summer), but I wanted to hit it again, and I was getting so close in recent sessions that it was starting to bug me.
After shred, we played some more 4square, then decided to go home. When Pascal dropped off Brett, we noticed how many people were swarming about the freshmen dorms at 11:30 at night, so I half-jokingly proposed: "How about some foursquare?" To my happy surprise, my club is hard-core. We hopped out the car and played under the streetlight, in the cold. I played in long pants and long-sleeved shirt, but everybody else was in shorts and t-shirts and played legit. We got a lot of interest, and a few new emails to add to our list. One guy, Evan, played a full game of 4 square with us, won, and looks like he'll definitely come to a meeting. Sweet.
I'm real happy how the club is progressing. Extra props to Luis for being on point with the Presidential duties. We won't get funds this semester, but we are officially a school club, got webspace, get club priveleges, and have a good shot at funds next semester. Things are looking very good.

Kinda weird weekend. I don't really know even where to start. Life definitely feels in flux now, and not all of it good. Just gonna try and roll with things and get in my assignments on time, and hopefully I can get on better track soon.
My trip to NYC was...hm. Maybe I shouldn't start blog entries when I haven't fully digested the experience. On the footbag side of things, it was nostalgic, and it also really sucked. I was in town for my sister's wedding, which meant I only had Saturday to play footbag. Happily, the weather was really great, so we hit Union Square to find... a really big, loud, and untalented band playing. Not ideal, but we staked out a spot and played there for a bit. The problem was, the band took up lots of space, so more people than usual were weaving in and out of circles, walking through, etc. Pretty annoying and distracting. On top of that, the music was super loud, so you couldn't even hear your own feet when you were playing. The floor at Union Square is always a bit slippery, so I should have taken into account the other factors and played more carefully, but I didn't. The combination of not hearing my own footsteps, keeping peripheral awareness of people around me, and the floor led to me trying a fusion and twisting my ankle. Fuck fuck fuck. Worst of all, this was only 20 minutes into the session. I made some valiant attempts to play more, but to no avail. The next couple hours turns into a hit parade of footbaggers I hadn't seen in ages (Jon Schneider! Josh Penney!), and I can't even play with them. It definitely was more than a little bit depressing.
I really hope my ankle heals up quick. I need footbag to survive, and all these breaks from it can't be good for me mentally.
More later if time allows.

... I hate Union Square and NYC in general now. It was bad enough that you tweaked your ankle a couple of months ago at the Square, and now you twisted it in this visit.
NOT GOOD. I really hope it heals up well by the Cornell Juggling Festival. Stay positive.

Didn't want to give the impression that my life sucks or anything. Just that I'm in a big transition phase now, and it's really pretty weird. The injury really sucked, but I already feel like I'm healing up some. There's footbag club tonight, and I brought my gear. I gotta be real careful not to overdo it... I should probably stick to just playing 4square the whole time.
On Monday the weather was beautiful, so the footbag club played outside at lunchtime in the hopes of getting more emails of interested people. It really was torture standing there, not being able to play, watching Luis and Pascal play. Long, easy runs really are the way to go. Most people have no idea what we're doing anyway, and once a drop happens, people stop watching. I was dying to play. We got in a game of 3 square, with 3 squares touching each other. That proved a lot of fun.
These last couple days have been killing me with work, and in 4 hours I have my first midterm, which I'm a touch nervous about. Nice thing is that no matter what happens, I have footbag club right after, so that should help me defuse. There's about a 50% chance I may go to NYC again this weekend, seeing how its spring break and rides are plentiful. On the other hand, I may stick around school to get some work done, and to avoid the temptation of playing footbag and re-injuring myself.

Whew, things are finally calming down some. The last 3 days saw me handing in problem sets in my two most challenging classes, and then taking a prelim (essentially a midterm) in one of them as well. That and my sister's marriage last weekend had me a touch stressed. Biiiig relief to have that all out of the way. In other good news, my ankle seems to be making some progress, and I haven't rushed it too much.
Lots of footbag in the last 24 hours. Right after my midterm, I hit footbag club. That was like my reward. Only 5 of us total yesterday, which is a small number, but it IS midterms week, so I'm not reading much into that. In good news, one of the 5 was a new member, Trevor. This kid can hit clippers both sides, basic 2s like mirage and legover, and even the occasional osis. If he wants to get serious, I can see him getting very good, very quickly. We played 3 games of 4square, and a good amount of hacking as well. 4square is such a great way to blow off tension, and the people at Cornell have really been the perfect combination of crafty, yet sportsmanlike. I managed to win one game, and in the other 2 I just focussed all my energy on trying to get Luis or Pascal out, even when I wasn't serving.
I guess the biggest personal highlight for me yesterday was that I didn't push my bum ankle too hard. It was definitely tempting. Right now, I can do toe game on both feet, and left foot clipper as if nothing were wrong, but I can't really do right foot clipper without feeling pain. Like, the act of doing ankle crank with that leg hurts. Still, even doing basic toe stuff was lots of fun for me.
Highlights:
*ATW o-i x10 to legover, to ATW o-i X10.
*atom smasher x3
*diving clipper x13
Pascal played well. Flip blur just magically showed up tonight, and looks easy for him. Flip tap for the first time as well. After footbag club, Luis, Pascal and I played some pool, and L+P shredded at Luis's frat. Pascal hit clip-set spinning toe stall, to toe set spinning toe stall. Luis has also started doing clipper set spinning toe stall. Good stuff.
The next day (today), I got up early to go get some footbag photos taken for the Cornell Juggling Festival. There's gonna be a big show on Saturday night, and I will be one of the featured performers. I'm real nervous and excited to perform in the same show as some of the world's best jugglers and ballspinners. I hope I heal up well before then. Anyway, I'm gonna be on the poster, so I got some photos taken today of me doing 2 bag juggling, fliers, and sole stalls. Footbag photos are so easy to fake... I'm excited about the poster though. Definitely will make a cool souvenir.
After taking some photos, I got in a shred with Luis. I almost exclusively drilled tricks and combos for my routine, and Luis worked on tiltless. I was stoked to see him hit clipper-opp clipper for his first time, and he got it on both sides too.
Oh, its looking decreasingly likely that I'll go to NYC this weekend. I've got a lot of schoolwork I need to do, but beyond that, I'm afraid that I'd be too tempted in NYC to play hard, that I might reinjure myself, or slow the progress of my healing process.
