official call for feedback: Quantum01

Post by atze »

hey everyone,

since we're slowly but surely running out of stock we've started working on the Quantum02. Vasek is already testing the first prototypes.
We're still thinking of making minor changes at this point for the final production. So if you've shreded a pair of 01 and have anything constructive to say in terms of improvements, please write us a mail (quantum @ planetfootbag . com)

we are especially looking for data on long term performance of the 01 version.

feedback is welcome until October 1st

thanks!

I havent worn them, or seen them in person, since my size wasnt available.
I think any feedback should include if they changed them to a thinner insole, and what their shoe of choice was before, laver, g6...

maybe set something up with someone in the states so shipping isnt so expensive?
Plain, with everything.

Stephan traded his pair for Blue Lavers.

They look more sleek. Less bulky than lavers which is good.

There should be a clipper stall frame. Like built up material along the places where the footbag often rolls off during the trick osis.

Possibly another color. Red.

I'm sorry, but that is ridiculous. That would be soooo lame. You wouldnt need crank, cushion, or any sort of technique to delay it. And it would fuck up sets. just get some montys if you want a half pipe on the inside.

Here is the review I wrote on quantums when I recieved my pair.

:D

Here is my review:

Overview:
They are way lighter than lavers, this means fast dexing moves and things like whirls are a lot easier, it also makes blender feel like the coolest thing you ever felt!

They look damn sexy - wow, I had to stop Toby stroking them today BECAUSE I WAS STILL WEARING THEM :? lol

There is one less eyelet than lavers because the wings are further back, so start rethinking ur lacing patterns!

They have a low inside bit, so no need for ugly brokka mod!!

Material - the inside and toe are made out of a soft foamy material (maybe for bag shock absorbtion?) The material seems pretty grippy and you can feel the bag through it very well.

Professional look - I heard some people walking past today saying "Wow they have special shoes for hacky now!" - in other words, these clearly look like specialised shoes, not your everyday kicks - BUT they look damn stylie too (better than origional lavers IMO).

Toe:
Take the insoles out, I coulden't even hit legover with em in.

Toe size depends on lacing patern, I have laced so my wings don't stand up very much at all. I tried standing them up but they are too far back to hold the bag on your toe and just act as snags for the bag.

The bad - My wings cover quite a bit of my toe box and since the sweet spot is quite far back on the toe box, it means you have to be pretty precise about where you catch the bag. Since the toe material is soft, it's like the bag is landing on your bare foot, if you catch it on your toes it sets forwards so you have to catch it in the toe joint area (right between the wings), so in the end I think the effective toe area is bigger on lavers.
From my experiance today the toe box is harder to stall on, if I drop the bag on my laver it will 90% just plop in the toe box and stay, if I do the same on my quantums and it doesn't fall atleast close to the centre, it will roll off.
For some odd reason atomic sets are harder, I don't seem to be able to set the bag toward the inside of my knee, this could be because it defaults to setting perfectly stright? I hit fairy blender today no sweat and then spent a good chunk of time trying to hit atomic blender, and managed to actually get off about 2 atomic sets in like 10 minutes :?.

The good - this is helping a lot, I am consistantly catching the bag in the middle of my foot so my sets are far more consistnat, also I don't have my toe sets catching on my wings like I did with lavers so I think my toe game will improve with quantums. Provided I stall the bag close to the sweet spot, it seems to move automatically to the perfect spot and results in a perfect set almost everytime, this has ment my fairy and pixie sets are more consistant, but it's taking me more concentration to actually hit the toe delays in my moves.

Clipper:
The clipper rail isn't as curved as lavers and the suade that goes round the front of the shoe doesn't come back far enough to effect the bag. This is good and bad.

The bad - the sweet spot isn't as obvious as on lavers, lavers have the bit of suade which stops the bag and they have a huge curve in the sole which means you can do clippers without having flat ankles.
Since there is no concentrated sweet spot that the bag rolls into and catches on, it makes stepping sets a bit harder because the bag doesn't have a little hole to fling out of during the set

The good - I'm not sure but it feels like the clipper rail slopes outward so when the bag lands on your clipper, if it slides or rolls, the curved outward edge of the shoe stops it, which results in MUCH LESS ROLL OFF! WOOOO!
The sweet spot seems longer and less concentrated, so you can catch the bag anywhere along the clipper rail and it will set evenly. This seems like it would reward flat clippers which I don't mind at all :)

Sole:
Pretty much the sexiest thing i've seen in my life.

I'm going to have to quit doing flappers least I get flocked by girls that are in love with my gangsta 'quantum' soles ;).

They are initially a little slippery (same as lavers to start with) but I think that when the plasticy sheen wears off they will be grippy as ever.

Spell Quantum upside right so you can read it when you clipper!

First off I'd like to say these are great shoes and they play GREAT. Also the shoes I used before switching over were Lavers.

Something in particular I want to keep the same about the shoe:

I really like how the quantum logo on the bottom of the shoes isn't mirrored on the other shoe. It makes each one unique =].

Image

As for some changes...

First off I found the stock insole to be too thick, and not very supportive. The thick insoles translate into the toe box being slightly raised, making toe stalls more difficult as well as less precise. Weak support can obviously cause problems. I changed the insole out for some thinner spenco insoles that I cut based off the stock shape and they work great.

Image

Design wise the shoes are great and play great as I said before but some durability issues need to be adressed in the next model.

On my left shoe the top of the shoe began to seperate from the rubber sole =/.

Image

The problem runs all the way across the inside of the shoe as indicated by the yellow lines.

Image

I also had somewhat of the same problem on the right shoe but less seriously.

Image

As far as this defect goes, its only cosmetic at this point, and doesnt interfere with the playability of the shoe. Although I dont know if that will stay the case if it worsens any more. The reason my left shoe might be more problematic than the right could be the fact that I use my left a bit more as a support leg (maybe some syposium mirages loosened up the materials). Or maybe in the process of being made the seal between that gap wasnt made as strong as it should have, as on the right shoe.
Although this defect isnt effecting my game, it has made it easier for the mesh to rip =[.

Image

And this of course can become a big problem.

In conclusion, I think the basic design of the shoe should stay the same. The isnsole and toe box could use some tweaking, and the quality of the shoe (durabilty, life span, seals between layers of the shoe) needs to be improved some. It could be an easy fix and you guys may already know about it, but if not I hope the 02 model gets the benifits of it.

And thx for making such an awsome shoe as the first oficiall footbag sneaker!

P.S. (Funny how that makes me think of footbag now), Thanks for grabbing these for me while you were in Frankfurt Steves.

hey guys,

thanks for the reviews so far and also for those you sent by email.

just so you know what's gonna happen for version02:

first thing we are trying to solve right now are the quality issues. the bad glueing of the sole has been a problem for a lot of people (you can fix it though by simply reglueing with shoegoo or something like that). this of course should not happen and will not happen for version02. we're considering making a recall of the verion01 once the 02 is out for everyone who had the glue problem. but this depends on how far the producer is actually willing to take responsibility for this issue. we couldn't afford it otherwise.
some people have had an issue with the sole cracking in places on the forefoot. it seems to depend strongly on how heavy you are, how hard you shred and on what kind of surface you play. this problem we hope to solve but cannot be 100% sure it will be solved for the 02 version. at this point we cannot afford to work with a two component sole (like the lavers for instance). so we have to balance the performance of the sole with just one material. but we will be working on a better mixture for the 02 version that will hopefully have the same shock absorption, flexibility with slightly better traction and durability.

apart from that we are not 100% sure of what we're actually gonna change for the 02. we definately wont be able to change the shape of the sole. this is the most expensive part of making a shoe. so for instance flipping the logo to make it readable on a clipper is out of the question (although it hurts me too and it was my fault because in the last minute stress i forgot to recheck the files we sent into production).

we will try to make slight modifications to the toebox to prevent the "puffing" and get a better pocket for toestalls. we will not change the position or shape of the toerails.

we will probably change to a thinner insole although we will still emphasise that people should really get themselves some proper athletic insoles if the freestyle on a regular besis.

we will be testing new materials to replace the mesh (which some people found too slippery) but we cannot promise to find a better alternative for the 02.

we will try to improve the lateral support by changing to heavier suede for the linings and adding a stronger heel cup. heavier sued however might affect the "crankability" so we're not sure yet.

some people have suggested making the cut on the inside lower (sort of like a broka mod). we might be testing this but we fear that it might lead to severe lateral stability issues and we don't want the shoe to be the cause for ankle strains or breaks or whatever.

ok, that was a quit down low on what wee gonna be trying. remember the whole quantum project is a "wok in progress". so don't expect the shoe to be perfect for version02. but you can be sure that we will continue working and improving on it. and every version you buy will help us do this.

thanks for your help!

I like my quantums. They are still relatively new for me, however.

I didn't like the toe area until i laced them differently which opened it up for me more. Now i really like them. I bought size 9 and they fit perfectly so that is excellent that the size difference between going from shoes like lavers to quantums are correct, in my case anyway.

I think the shoes are nice and light, look nice, and are comfortable thus far. I have had no problem with durability problems but i will see how that goes soon. There is always room for improvement so keep up the good work.

I plan on trying to buy every version of the Quantum for a cool collection.

EDIT:Now to bring something useful to this topic!

I've been having to shoegoo the hell out of a part of my sole =/ I keep cracking it! It will suck if I either have to buy a new pair or even go back to lavers =(
