How Much Do The Online Comps Mean To You?

Post by footymatt »

I think the online comps, ran by nic, have so far changed my game forever. Everytime I play or pratice I think about hitting the next big trick to send in. Only thing is my trikz don't work on camera, just in shred!! Without these comps my game would progress so much slower, THANKS NIC!!

Everybody post what makes you feel great about the comps!!

I too am a huge fan of the comps and credit them as the reason for me getting into freestyle seriously.

I was kind of halfassed getting into freestyle for about 5 months (after 12 years of being a circle kicker), I could hit clipper, ATW, and legover and surfed the footbag.org forums occasionally. I had no idea about modified. Then one fateful day I saw a post from the legendary Nic Bathgate on footbag.org about how that month's online competitions had been posted. I checked it out, WOW. I was enthralled. I HAD to enter, I had to bust phat moves. And to do that... I had to get better...

Needless to say my first set of entries in January was a lesson in humility. I had lavers but still shredded in jeans instead of shorts because I didn't know any better. I hit a really choppy 2>2>2 sick 3 and my sick 1 was the most terrible excuse for an Osis ever. Looking back on it now it's kinda embarrasing. But hey! I took 3rd in Novice sick 1 this time :) I like how I've progressed in 8 months.

Yes I agree, daydreaming about what I'm going to hit in the comps is always fun. I think next month might be my first shot at open sick 1, because I think I'll hit spinning PS mirage pretty soon. The comps aren't the end all be all though. You shouldn't only go for sick 3s. String length and bothsideness are things you still need to develop on your own. It's important to not lose sight of that (and several other important things) in the pursuit of the ultimate sick 1 and sick 3.

For me the competitions are about self improvement and development. Being better than your best self. Giving it your absolute best. Turning on your camera and busting the baddest shit you can bust. It's an awesome feeling when you finally hit what you wanted, upload it to your computer and relive the experience countless times over again. I've thanked Nic countless times for the comps. They are what got me into footbag, which is now my favorite activity in life. It definitely gave me footbag fever. Thank you. The comps rule.

The online competitions don't really have any effect on my drilling and practice. I submitted some stuff this time mainly because Nic wouldn't get off my back about it. ;)

My personal drive to get better is just that: Personal.

lol.

Whatever. My personal motivation is personal as well. It has to be, I'm a solo shredder. I think the comps are a lot of fun although I sometimes just don't get around to entering because I'm a procrastinating sissy. I think it's fantastic how great a motivator it is for the newer players.

Have you put in on an online comp? if so, did you have to practice the move prior to filming it, or was it more like video taping a shred?

I love these competitions. It's such a great idea to hold these!! I don't enter every month for the same reasons that others have sited (wrong timing, procrastination, etc...) but when I do enter I always get MAD stoked for the final results. The first time that i ever got up super early to shred before school was when I was training for one of these comps... they definately have had a very positive effect on my game.

This month, I'm hoping that my little sister (10 years old) will enter in the October Modified Sick Events. She's getting really stoked about it and she's been schooling her toe stalls and working on her ankle crank everyday. I've promised her a 32-P bag of her very own. These competitions inspire. My sister could (possibly) wind up being one of the world's top shreditas because Nic hosts these friken awsome competitions! ...possibly. I'm just saying

anyway, Thank you VERY much for hosting these, Nic.

Keep it real

i enjoy watching the competitions, at first i would watch the novice ones and was amazed at what people could hit, recently ive gone back and re-watched many of these and its cool that i can do some of the things people in the videos do and also that ive met people in the videos as opposed to them just being strangers gives a different point of view, i like the videos too cause it helps with learning the terminology since the replays are in slow mo, and it tells you the name as you see it

As a poor solo shredder in the middle of nowhere these comps are the only chance I have to compete. I like them alot. I love that I've gotten into the Open bracket a few times, I don't consider myself to be a open player at all. IT's also REALLY great to be able to read the comments about what you hit afterward. I still go back and read some the comments that were given whether it's for the advice or to feel good about myself.

Thanks for running these comps Nic!

yes i have and i borrow a camera and filmed hard sick3 (or sick1) which is pretty easy to me. i didn't practise moves or sicks for online comp., i practised for tourneys.

i wanted to say that competiton at tourneys is better and more importaant for me.

I love watching them, but they hurt my shins tremendously to film.

I love watching playerz like Anz bust big time moves, but I can't even think of hitting that stuff yet. So it's great that us "noobie's" can watch other noobie's doing different stuff that..hey...looks like componts I use..let me try...bamm!! yes we hit new stuff!! And it's awesome..hope I didn't confuse u guys!

Don't get me wrong though I reallly love watching these playerz hit big moves, but levels man....levels....yeah that's deep...

I love the process of thinking about what conecepts I can push in the months leading up to the competition so I will be able to hit a good sick3 or sick1, unfortunatly I have't played in a month and now I have 10 days to push those concepts... lol :D

Yes. For me, if a sick1 or sick3 isn't unique from something I've done before, I'm not happy with it.
