I used a grid, no trace. I've been known to trace for more design heavy work when I just don't have the time to sit and draw it out. Back in certain classes the emphasis was on cranking out effective work that met the tight deadlines. It used to conflict with my ideas of what illustration should be. But I took commercial art, not fine art. A small part of me still feels dirty when I trace.

Yes, exactly. Have you tried it? It's great for getting to know your values.

Thanks. Footbag and art have several things in common:
-Practice makes perfect
-There's always someone better than you. Try not to compare yourself to them. Instead, see if you have improved from your last piece of art or your last string of tricks.

No, I don't have a huge range in mediums. I'll see if my art teacher has any black paper, I know he has white charcoal, because I used it for highlights sometimes in my charcoal drawings. Trying to expand on it now, though. My next art project (about footbag, of course!) is going to include acrylics, charcoal and pastels hopefully.
Thanks for the tips, though.

The paper doesn't have to be black, it can be any dark shade of color. That will serve as your midtone. Then use white for the highlights and normal charcoal pencils for darker values. Can't wait to see more stuff.

Cover art to Freestyle Reality. Sam wanted an exciting Manga/Anime type cover. Because it was a style I'm not terribly familiar with I had to get some referance material to get a better feel of what it looked like. I took certain liberties with the costumes in terms of texture and color but I tried to keep it as faithful to the characters as I could. Sam seemed to be very pleased with the outcome. I remember being terribly nervous when I first showed it to him, I was already behind deadline.
My favorite part of this piece is how the character's energy projectiles merge to make a sublte form of a 32 panel footbag. I forget who exactly came up with it, I just remember being frustrated with how to pull it off. I'm very pleased with the final outcome though.
