Athletic Apparel

Post by Pengu »

There's been an insurgence of sportswear on the market these days and more technology and research has been put into the making of athletic apparel as fitness becomes more of a concern. Performance apparel has always been around, but it's never been more mainstream and readily available. Items tout qualities like anti-stink, moisture-wicking, seam-free anti-chaffe, mesh vents, and super-stretchy flexibility for full ranges in movement.

I was wondering if people think that items like climacool, underarmor, coolmax, patagonia etc. are worth their pricetag? Do you guys wear this stuff?

And since there's no athletic apparel geared for footbaggers, what are your favourite items in your closet for footbag and what were the originally geared for?

I'm not talking just of shorts here. Shirts, underwear, sports bras, and socks should all be considered.

well brian and i have been trying a lot of different things out lately. we recently got underarmor (adidas) because it was on sale at this place called kohls. he really likes his but mine didnt fit (wasnt made for women's curves). as far as socks go i get the athletic kind that are basically mesh and there is arc support. no certain brand... you can get them at walmart pretty cheap.

since winter is finally coming and its starting to get cold i was on a hunt for gear that i could wear to keep my legs warm. so far ive found leggings and these have been a life saver. theyre restricting if you wear them in heat (because theyre like socks pretty much) but when its cold they are an advantage.i mean... i look crazy when i wear them... like im in jazzercise... but theyre worth the "humiliation". ill be buying more of these on ebay in diff. colors soon.

sweat bands for your head are a must. unless you like sweat in your eyes. but i suggest getting more than one if you plan on shredding at least once a day. they get stinky and if you try to reuse them the next day your head will smell like farts.

i just wear any shirt i have thats laying around thats not baggy. i do have some adidas soccer jerseys but they were ordered on ebay and one is too small. the one that fits rocks but i footbag too much to wear that every time i shred.

and i find sports bras uncomfortable.

ive been trying out the adidas underarmour, and its pretty cool. it acts like underarmour, pulling sweat from your body, and pushing it out. a breeze feels amazing with those on, like youre not wearing a shirt at all. as long as its your size, it should be pretty flexible, even if it is alittle too tight.

ive been wearing numerous brands of athletic socks. my favorite option is no socks, but if you need socks, i like clima running socks, with the top being meshy. maximum feel, support, heat reduction (already in climas tho)

sweat bands. i need em cause i have long hair. keeps it from my face, but keeps me from looking like i just got out of the pool or something, dripping everywhere. important. i use wilson, cause thats the only brand that i like from walmart.

knee brace thing like honza. testing this out now. just got it yesterday. looking to ease my shin splints and keep my knees from ever acting up again.

shorts. i usually try and keep with adidas, since they usually have pockets, and are the shortest. (i use womens jogging shorts, meshy, but not clima)
i also have some nike and umbro shorts, and some no names. adidas is the best. the legs arent baggy, the material is breathable, more than the "swishy" kind.

im fixing to buy a shred mat. its pretty nice, i used one the other day, and man is it the best thing you can do for your feet. i walked away from that sesh with no foot pain. every other time, i end up jumping up and down too hard on the front of my foot. sometimes it bruises, but not often.
id reccommend the ones sams carries, or getrung.com both are pretty much the same, and come in colors if your not liking the greys.

i guess when i pull all this shit out of the car, getting ready for a shred, i look real serious, and probably pretty stupid. (since 9/10 times its at a skate park) . its totally worth it, as long as you like the gear, and are not ambarrassed by having leggings, or sweat bands, or short shorts. the armor is kinda weird looking, but it serves its purpose well.

all in all. i like sports wear. it is worth it, cause it makes multiple sessions a week happen. i have too much of it, and i spend alittle too much money on it. but i like it.

Peng and I are usually pretty high-tech when we shred. :P Certainly a far cry from ratty shorts and beat up lavers.

I am picky about my shorts and their fit but I have this one pair of Climalite shorts that fit PERFECT and move amazing.

I don't wear socks to shred, barefoot climas represent!

For shirts I usually just wear one of my many many small t-shirts, though lately I sometimes sport my super high tech climacool jersey, it fits my torso amazing and it wicks shit away and all that, love it.

I like having tight fitting shorts. Much better then the old long shorts I had.

I hate using Socks, I feel they just mess with my game somehow.

I like the wear shirts I get from Tounrys or not even wear a shirt at all.

I might have to start wearing a headband because my hear is starting to get too long.

Lately, I've begun wearing a titanium bracelet around my wrist, and I feel that I have a small increase in energy lately. Like, i feel that my circulation has improved just a bit with this on. I'm thinking of getting titanium necklaces and wrap them around my calfs whenever I shred. :P Still unsure about how it really affects me since I've only worn it for a week and a half, but it's pretty cool to look into.

I wear Nike Cushioned Runner's socks. They restrict your feet, wick sweat away from your feet a bit, and absorb shock pretty well. They also ventilate your feet a bit, but not as well as the Lightweight version. This is the only brand sock I will only wear for walking and footbag. There's no better sock for me.

More energy because you're being poisoned? That sounds rather unlikely... ;)

You can find them anywhere at your local sports retail store.

I believe a year ago or so Richard Abshire was talking about these things, but in patch form I think. I don't know.

I've had a number of people I've talked to about shred shorts. I wanted to get Planet Footbag mesh shorts, but from a few warnings about the thinness of the mesh and being a bit baggy (I think), my chances for getting them is now slim. I've seen David Clavens wear them at this year's Funtastiks, and it looks transparent in a way, so I don't know. I'm sure they breathe super well and wick sweat away pretty badass, but I like to look for durability in my shred shorts (since I wear them underneath my pants like 90% of the time I go shred).

I'm currently sporting my brand new pair of anti-stink, seam-free athletic underoos and they are SO comfy and since I biked to school, they haven't ridden up or anything. There's something to be said of a good pair of underpants that are the perfect cut for you. They are staying put very well and I'm glad I got them for 40% off and stocked up on a few pairs. They are keeping my tush pretty dry too. I biked really hard around campus today so that I got my energy out after my 8:30am class so I can get some work done during my break. No wet crotch from sweat today!

i bought this stuff from a nike store a while ago, its called nike dri-fit. hell of an original name. its like underarmor except i think its a little bit thinner. i bought a sleeveless top and about medium length shorts. i rarely wear socks, and i usually wear sweat armbands because my hair really isnt that long, but when it gets sweaty it gets in my eyes and stuff so i need some way to soak the sweat up, and rubbing my forearm across my head is the fastest way. im looking into those mats, but i havent bought any yet.

I have 5 pairs of Adidas Climalite shorts that were relatively cheap. I have several Under Armour Loose Gear shirts if I have to play with a shirt on or I wear basketbal jersey replicas. I definately appreciate the benifits of performance fabrics but I don't always want to pay top dollar for it. Target sells Champion brand clothing with performance similar (IMHO) to Nike, Adidas and Under Armour but at about half the cost.

I'm sorry but someone has to post and say that the titanium braclet idea is foolish and a giant waste of money. Honestly stop and think about it for a second. If such a product worked you would see in every magazine, every new cast on tv, and in every newspaper, and everyone in the world would want one. People who buy these are wasting their time and money.

If you don't agree then I have a magical rock I can sell you that keeps tigers away. Only $4.20 each.
