I just think this criticism shoudl be left to PM's then we wont have these flame wars.

And sam, it looked like Mads obviously didn't appreciate your post, and thats why he took the video down. So doesn't this mean that you should improve by giving your critique in PM's so that all this doesn't happen again? I think thats a more logical conclusion,... Peace

I suppose there are two perspectives on that.

On one hand if I give the critique in PM then maybe the person won't get offended. But why would they unless they were just embarressed because it was true? Otherewise they would refute my views saying how they didn't agree with me.

On the other hand if I give the critique as a post then everyone can learn from it.

No, I don't think I want to only be allowed to post my oppinions privately. What is happening here?

I don't think Sam was out of line at all with his post.

It was honest criticism from a person with enough experience in video making to be credible and worth listening to.

I think the message was taken the wrong way, perhaps since the first post mostly critcized and didn't congradulate too much.

But seriously now.. go read his first post with the understanding that it's from the perspective of a nice guy trying to help out a fellow video maker.

We're all friends here!

The video was great! And like everything else in life, there are small ways in which in can be improved.

IMO even "constuctive critisism" is bullshit. Anyone who makes vids is a footbag hero in my book. And at the rate mads puts them out, he is the footbag GOD. Mads works are pieces of art, and can't be improved upon, period!
Try telling Eric Clapton, "this is how to make your music better" and see how many FREE songs he gives you in the future. James E stopped making shred vids because of "constructive critisism", I pray Mads doesn't do the same.

Except with the part about mads rocking for popping amazing vids out like nothing else. Definately agree with that. That certainly would be a massive loss of mads went that way.

Unfortunatly I'm really unimpressed with the camera work in this video. I don't mean to offend and I apologize, but I think that Vasek deserves some good filming techniques.

For example in the first shot vasek comes out of the door and does a triple atw and the bag goes off the screen and the slow mo is super choppy. Try using the frame blend option it will help your slow mo. Try gently moving with the ebb and flow of the footbag, it will help the bag stay in focus. Make sure there is movement in your camera work, movement that compliments Vaska's insane movement. See I'm not just dissing, I'm making contructive suggestions. I really mean no disrespect and I hope you all listen to smokey the bear..

Eh, if you go back and READ Sam's entire post ^^^, there seems to be an underlying tone of maliciousness to it. Maybe it's jealousy of another film artist, who knows. And even at first it just seems like a critique, but then at the end Sam gets snide and says:

Idk, was that last part necessary? It's as if he knew that his comments were insensitive enough to start flaming. I'm on the fence of whether or not critique should be public, but I do think that Sam's post could've been friendlier, especially without that jab at the end.

I'm with Will - it's just not an appropriate place. Do you think *any* footbag players give a fuck about how good the video is? No! We just want to see hot shred. Shit, I have clips of Felix filmed by someone's cell phone in a dark club. Who cares?

If someone is asking for critiques, fine, but I kind of think Mads just wanted to see people geek over Vasek, not catch heat about "problems" he already knew were there.

This isn't an art gallery (but there is a SWEET new one in downtown Denver, so everyone come to CSS8!), so take your criticisms down south - especially when the original poster's portfolio FAR outclasses your own.

edit: and one of the better vids Sam ever made used a copyRIGHTED Amon Tobin song. end of discussion.

Wow, what a sad turn. Makes me wish I'd shown my appreciation much sooner. This was groundbreaking performance shred by the world's best freestyler in a beautiful setting, and having the privelege of receiving videos from someone who puts his time and effort and money for equipment into his projects simply for our enjoyment is a great thing to me.

I see this from the total other end of the spectrum. as long as there's enough light, and the camerawork doesn't look like it was done mid-earthquake, a footbag video is good enough for me. edit: which is not to say that I don't value or appreciate the artistry mads or other filmmakers use. I'm just not about to pick apart perceived shortcomings of an editor's filmmaking choices, because those aren't what make or break a video for me.

I loved all the performance shots, and the MASSIVE moves... backside nemesis was incredible, and that attempt at gyro backside nemesis looked close(ish)

. Can't wait to see what vasek and mads have in line for us next.

I think Sam Colclough should go post somewhere else, where his helpful genius will be better understood. Us idiots on modified keep making the mistake of misinterpreting him as childish, obnoxious, and entirely lacking in tact.

Sam, were I to post them for the world to see, you could just take my suggestions however you want and go on being a better human being, but you'd probably pitch a hissy fit and try and overthrow modified again.

And maybe if you guys could see through the fact that it's Sam, you would start making some sense.

What's with all the word-by-word analyses?? Why does sam's work vs mad's work matter shit in this case?

I think the idea that the quality of the video doesn't matter, would be more offensive to mads than sam's post. He doesn't just slap it all together, he puts hours of work into making a great shred vid. I get the feeling mads cares about video quality.

Agh. I really don't want to get involved in this shit but neither do I feel comfortable standing by while you guys crucify sam just cause you don't like him. geez. Everyone should stop being so hyper sensitive.

Sam, no one is learning anything by having this outside of PM's, all it does is completely derail a topic of conversation and piss people off. Even if you don't agree with people's wishes, you should at least respect them.

Well, on the bright side because this post happened now people aren't chewing out this Sam for his somewhat inflamatory post. But at the same time I actually had some things I wanted to talk about. Oh well, such is the way of modified - nothing important ever gets done. If anyone wants to resume the actual thread of conversation about the video, I'm game. Trying to get back on topic...

Edit: Jamieson: I think you're missing the point of Stephen's post a little bit. Because most players aren't completely preoccupied by editing and are stoked to see crappy clips of great players, people should be fawning over Mads for really putting his heart and soul into all of the AMAZING videos he's given us instead of ripping into him.

Sadly, I think this whole stupid community is a bunch of fuckin morons who love to get compliments and who can't stand when someone tells them they're not the best or that their work wasn't perfect. When I read Sam's post, I thought to myself, "Wow, now he did a pretty good job of tempering his comments so as to not offend the video maker." Then I see the video maker get his panties all twisted up in the next three posts. WTF is up with that? If you post a video here, expect the good and the bad coments. Free speech is what its all about. If you can't handle someone saying "I didn't like it that much", then maybe you shouldn't be making videos.

Personally, I thought the movie was great, and it is one of the few movies that has come out right now that I'll likely watch again. I might even keep it around on my computer. I don't know that much about video editing though, I was just really impressed with the video quality and the amazing shred.

This is straight from the heart, no tempering of my commentary here. I spit it how I feel.

Great job. Your vids continue to be one of the best reasons to stop by Modified. Just out of curiosity, what kind of camera do you use?

I wouldn't let Sam's comments bother you. His motives are really quite transparent. We all know he's just sore because some Modified members think your videos are better than his (how dare they!):

I also wouldn't put too much stock in Sam's advice on taking criticism. He's probably the last person in the world that has any right to talk about taking criticism gently. Remember how whenever anyone criticizes his video work he huffs and puffs and has a conniption fit? Or remember when someone criticized his poetry on some literature discussion forum, and he tried to get everyone on Modified to go over there and start a flame war? That was awesome:
