Honestly, the only way to actually get better at footbag is to play footbag.

Chuck Norris doesn't have to play footbag to get better at footbag.

i think the 2 liter and road cone ideas are good.

the footbag idea is better.

the dexmaster idea isnt too great.

i mean. a footbag can fit in your pocket. that constructed thing looks like a hastle. i can understand needing something around when you cant jump and shit... but using a jug would solve this problem more efficiently because those are just laying around. i think if i saw someone bring a dexmaster to a shred i would be disappointed because with all the time you took to cut that right and put it together you could have been using a footbag and actually getting somewhere. it just seems you were really high or bored and decided you wanted to make something that had to do with footbag. try kicking more. no matter how good youre at with the dexmaster, youre gonna have to practice with the bag anyway. the dexmaster seems to be more of a thing to take up time.

footbag more.

i dis agree, i think he was using his spare time to create something as simple as a bottle but, has the same purpose, just a little more thought put into it, i dont think he would bring this to a tourney or jam or whatever, i think he intended it for personaly use to help him refine his dexes, thats all, lets try not to bash on someone who though of something that could be benificial, please?

HenryG wrote:Answer me this though. Why not just work pixies with a bag? Or double downs with a bag? Actually the double downs are a good idea with this thing, if its the right size, but pixie? I dont think the dex ever needs work on pixie, its more of a timing and foot placement thing. Either way, nice work on the solid construction. :)
I had been trying to learn pixie for six months. It was really frustrating. All these other n00bs seem to learn it right away, I couldn't get it. I had about 6 or 7 people try to teach me. I just couldn't get it anywhere close. 1 session of dexercising I hit pixie both sides and about 5 downtime components out of it.

I'm not saying dexercising is a magic pill for everyone. It helped me a great deal, so I wanted to share. Everyone should give it a shot.

Sorry to break it to you, and no disrespect, but you really have no idea what you're talking about. For at least 10 years, people have been using things such as these to practice and perfect small, circluar dexterities. For moves like double around the world and for double downs, also barrages, this thing works wonders.

Its called dexercise, and for all you guys with legs too slow to double dex, it would probably help a great deal. When I made my relative low-tech version, I also included a lateral bar for swirl dex practice as was brought up in this thread several posts ago.

Ben, nice construction on this piece of equipment. Personally, I wouldn't recommend learning sets with it, but hey, if it works for you then by all means go at it! It really works best for building up speedy and consistently circular same leg double dexes. I also like to do strings of double dex moves around it, such as:

DATW>pixie dod>barrage>paradon>barrage>dod>barfly>flurry>
dod>barrage>paradon . . . etc.

Sounds magic to me.

I've never really trained like that, but since I'm not playing as much at the moment, I think I will do something like that. I think something a bit more forgiving with a rubber feel would be great. Hmmm...I think I may have to go to lowes this weekend and brainstorm, I love building things :)

i didnt say dont dexercise. obviously you didnt read much of what i said. i didnt say that practicing was a bad idea. i was saying use things that are already made... ie. jugs and road cones.

thats a way to put something respectfully? yeah, right. i know what im talking about, you just disagree. obviously if you disagree with someone that makes them wrong and you right. how is saying practice with a footbag wrong?

and i wasnt the only person who said this. other people that have been footbagging longer said the same thing.

Hmm, okay. Even though I may have failed at being respectful, I did actually read your entire post Holly. And I noticed that you said road cones were a "good idea," so explain to me the best way to acquire a road cone. If you say find it (i.e., steal it), then I say, "Thats a bad idea, not a good one." Unless of course, your community has tons of free road cones that they like to give away. And I challenge you to buy a road cone for less than 5 bucks.

Secondly, a road cone is wider at its base than Ben's device, so technically, practicing dexing it might actually limit your ability to complete a very tight circular second dex.

Maybe you could post a pic of the type of "jug" you're talking about, because I have no visual image of a good dexercising jug.

Also, you said: "the dexmaster idea isnt too great." Well, the idea of the dexmaster is perfect actually-it was his implementation of the idea that failed in your opinion.

Holly, when you said:

"it just seems you were really high or bored and decided you wanted to make something that had to do with footbag."

That wasn't very respectful either, was it? So when someone decides to use their ingenuity to create something useful, you assume they're high or bored?

You also said: "No matter how good youre at with the dexmaster, youre gonna have to practice with the bag anyway. the dexmaster seems to be more of a thing to take up time."

The dexmaster is IMO, for those times when you CANT session, but when you want to do something footbag related to increase your precision for certain moves. It is not a decive to "take up time" but rather to use your time wisely.

Although there is a fair amount of opinion in this post, luckily it is all correct.

HEY GUYS STOP ARGUING ON MY TOPIC!

I created this topic as a suggestion for equipment to improve people's game. If you don't like my idea, don't try it. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. All this negativity is giving me a rash... However if you really feel what I'm suggesting is dangerous/counterproductive and/or generally doing a disservice to the modified community then tell a mod and let them deal with it. We don't need to clog up this topic aruging over who is right and who is wrong.

Peace,
Ben

Yeah, I kind of agree with your point on the water bottle drills, Ben. In a way, it really depends on a person's height. Since you stand at 6'1"-2", standard water bottles would be too small for you. I stand at 5'6"-7", and I sometimes think that a standard 2 liter bottle would be too small for my dexing windows.

I'm now having differentiated views on the dexmaster. I guess my bias comes from the fact that the PVC pipe is too slender in a way. I'm not sure whether that is a good thing or not, but if that pipe were a few inches/centimeters thicker (like if you wrap it with a legwarmer or whatever) it would have a much truer dexing window as you would revolve around the bag. Maybe adjust the height and having a small "cup" to hold the bag so that you can envision the correct height in dexing the bag as well.

I think this is a good idea, now that I think about it. It could be a better change to my water bottle. And I would definitely like the idea for a swirl bar.

Just so you know, letting arguments resolve themselves on their own is preferred over intervening by us mods. We catch a lot of flack when we become too involved. So, if there's conflict, this is how it's going to get resolved, not by a mod coming in and slapping wrists, and not by you telling everyone to shut up.

But, I will go back and delete my last post, if it pleases you. I should have just let Jeremy speak on his own. He's obviously more than capable of defending himself.

I myself am a subscriber to dexercising. If you are lucky enough to be able to play at your peak for 6 hours a day(which I could when I was learning clipper, legover ect) than this is probably uneccesary, however if you can only stand a few hours of intense shred a day, than dexercising is an incredibly good way to build muscle memory without overtaxing the joints and muscles. I owe my ability to hit whirr, jani, and ripstein to Mirken's methods...
However I don't use a machine or cone or anything. i simply look in the mirror to make sure my dexes look like Ales' until I have it in my memory and than repeat while looking down.

I also believe in streching, lifting weights, and days off, however I'm not even close to BAP so don't take any of my advise :D
