I'm hearing a lot of good stuff from Bear Feet and everything concerning Cornell. I can't wait to show up at the Juggling Festival! I'm doing my best to get as many people in NYC to go to Ithaca for all of this.

Health first, Ken. I can't wait to see you at Cornell come November. It's going to be a HUGE East Coast Footbag/Juggling event, I'll promise you that. :)

Life is weird, but overall good I'd say.

Footbagwise I'm feeling really good about the Cornell Club. Another member of the club bought lavers and modded them, which means that now there are 5 guys at Cornell with proper shred shoes, and I wouldn't be surprised if more buy them. I think that buying shoes really reflects a commitment to getting serious about footbag. I also really like the guys in the Cornell club. Yesterday I hung out with Pascal after footbag club, and did a ton of non-footbag activities that I really enjoy: played ping pong, watched 3 episodes of Futurama, played 2 games of chess, went shopping for microbrews, had some good beer, and played some more ping pong.

My ankle is also making decent progress. I injured it a week ago, and even as recently as Thursday I couldn't clipper with it without feeling serious pain. Yesterday however, I was able to play with it moderately with promising results. Just gotta keep stretching it, and not overdoing it with the footbag.

I've been thinking a lot about big tricks lately. I watched 2 good shred vids today, which marked my first time in... over a month watching a new footbag vid. I watched the new takumi vid, as well as the Vasek in Barcelona one. I was particularly excited to see the footage of blurry flurry. That's a trick I was thinking about recently, but now that I have seen it hit, it removes a lot of guesswork on my part about how to hit it; now I have a model to work off of.

I was also thinking I'd like to skool 3ATW and maybe work on nemesis as well. I think those 3 tricks are all worthy, pre-retirement aspirations. Blurry flurry especially seems like a possibility, cause I'm pretty good at fog and flurry, and the sides line up for me.

Non-footbag super cool thing I saw yesterday: My school is in the middle of nowehere, NY. We're pretty much in the woods, so its not uncommon to see deer, skunk, etc roaming campus, especially at night. Last night, i was walking to a friend's place when I heard a scuffle by some houses. I peeked in that direction and saw two large shapes fall on the floor. I thought it may be a drunken fight between two frat guys, but as I got closer, the strange grunts and primal power emanating from the shapes made me doubt that assessment. Sure enough, when the shapes came back into the light of the full moon, I saw that it was two young bucks, antlers locked together, fighting it out. 8O It was really incredible; I had seen stuff like this on nature programs thousands of times, but to randomly stumble across something like this on a Friday night, seeing it not 30 feet away, and hearing the violent grunts of the beasts so close... it was truly something fantastic. The two bucks kept at it for a good 10 minutes or more, before their fight moved into the brush of the forest, at which point I decided to get out of the freezing cold. Very cool stuff.

My decision to stay on campus for Fall break has proven to be pretty relaxing. I'm not out of the midterm woods yet, but I feel like last week was likely the hardest. Here's hoping those words don't bite me in the ass later.

The last few weeks have seen the weather consistently get cooler, and the last week was pretty exclusively long pants weather. So when I woke up yesterday to summer temperatures, I busted out the NBA jerseys and shorts, and spent all day outside. I walked along the famous gorges and took photos, and then called Pascal to play footbag downtown.

The ankle is continuing to improve. The previous session, I was thrilled that I could occasionally use it without pain. This session, I was able to shred on it almost naturally, with pain occuring only very rarely. Butterfly tricks are do-able, but some more "crank-y" stuff like pdx drifter and osis still tweak it. Regardless, it was a joy being able to play again, even with shorter, easier strings.

We played downtown on the Commons, which meant I had a golden opportunity to work on my routine tricks. Stuff like 2 bag juggling, low toe stalls, unusuals, fliers, etc. Between all that I also did the occasional legit run.

Highlights:

*pdx egg-dod-barfly repeat
*barfly-DDD repeat (normally, DDD-barfly repeat is easier for me)
*smear x2, and torque x 2 BSOS
*flip smear x4 (new record  )
*New personal barfly record, but I wasn't counting. Over 10 for sure.

Pascal played well, upping his string length, and figuring out toe pick-up real well. He hit the best string I've ever seen him do, which was 19 tiltless contacts, the first 10 of which were unique. I also saw him get a 16 string tiltless where every other contact was a clipper.

On the non-footbag front, I also set another record: I got 39 or 40 catches while juggling clubs! :D

Overall an excellent day.

Weather has been fantastic lately, which meant Pascal and I snuck in another session yesterday. We played on the sidewalk of a busy street, and even though we didn't get any new email addresses, we did spread the word of footbag.

My ankle is feeling better every day. While it's still not at 100%, it's good enough for me to catch glimpses of my past level, and I have high hopes for a full recovery soon.

Highlights:

*Pascal hit his first spinning osis! 8O
*7 contacts of rubberman for me, starting on legbeater, continued to some more tripless.
*blizzard-toe blur-toe ripwalk-blur-atomsmasher- atomic drop. Also hit the same combo, but with legbeater instead of toe ripwalk.

Pascal and I also developed a cool system to help us recruit. When you're playing in public, most of the time passersby don't show too much interest, so you can get away with just playing normally and dropping. Sometimes though, when you're in the middle of a string, somebody will stop to watch. Now, if you drop, that person will often just walk away. But if you know they are watching and extend your string to something long and easy (long tiltless string or whatever), then they stick around, and you can start talking to them about footbag. The problem is, its often hard to know when there is an interested party nearby, since you are busy focussing on playing.

To remedy this, Pascal and I discussed creating some kind of codeword we can yell at each other to tip each other off about interested watchers, so whoever is playing can lay down a longer, more spectator-friendly string. The first suggestion I blurted out was "long easy good string!" which we were surprised to realize could be the acronym "LEGS!" We used this code word a couple times successfully, but towards the end 2 cute girls walked by, and I felt real self-conscious about yelling "legs!" when they walked by, so we're thinking about coming up with a new code word.

How about:

"Hello there, I see you're watching me from a distance. Would you like to give me your phone number so I can call you later?"

I think I'm going to try that one in my next public session.

Not a bad idea...

Had a lot of fun at footbag club yesterday. Right before that, I got back my Econ midterm which got me real pumped up, cause I shitted all over it. Definitely a nice surprise. I rode my excitement into the session, and right away I felt that I had recovered some of the bounce in my step. The ankle still has occasional tweaks of pain, but on the whole I'm able to play normally on it. My stamina is way down though, which is something I'll need to work on, considering I'm doing a performance in a month.

Now that there's a Cornell Blog, I think I'll post my personal shred highlights in the Zine, and club reports in the Cornell Blog.

Personal Shred Highlights:

*being able to do combos which would make my "highlights" even if I wasn't injured.
*flurry bsos
*vortex-drifter.
*pixie whirl-flurry a couple times.
*blurry whirl-flurry, first try, then again on second try. I really like how this combo feels.
*a run with ripwalk-flurry, and dimwalk-flurry.
*a run that began with vortex, had blurry drifter using the other drifter, toe drifter bsos, and pdx drifter bsos. Dropped trying to bsos blurry drifter.

Now I need to be very very careful to not reinjure myself. I'm feeling pretty strong, but I'm still kinda in that danger zone, so hopefully I can continue to build on my progress slowly and carefully, and get back into shape for the Cornell Tourney.

Oh yeah, I'm also growing out my facial hair a la Sick 03 again.

Weird, I forgot to mention one of my best highlights from last session:

pdlo-dimwalk repeat, to pdx egg-dimwalk repeat.

I've been watching lots of old footbag vid on my computer. Felix's double blender-double spin clipper-double blender-double spinning drop still makes me giggle like a little girl.

Footbag club in a couple hours, but it may have finally gotten cold enough outside that we will move to a gym instead. :(

Grad school life is exciting. Lots of work, but also lots of cool people and lots of fun.

Footbag club on Friday was good times indeed. For some reason though, I'm having trouble remembering what happened. :? Uh, I did get 36 catches of juggling clubs. We also played a ton of 4square. At one point we had a 10 man game! It was nuts. Brett kept singing "Try to catch me riding dirty", occasionally changing the lyrics to comment on the progress of the game. I laughed a lot. Nick is picking up mirage well. I forgot to mod his insteps. I think I shredded well, but for some reason I'm drawing a blank. That's gotta be a first. In any case, if I didn't shred well, I guess I should be happy I have optimistic amnesia.

Been working on getting sponsors for the Cornell Tourney.

Opening my blog and seeing the first post on this page, where I was crippled and happy to hit anything at all, really makes me feel happy that my ankle has progressed as much as it has. Being injured sucks, and even though my stamina still suffers thanks to the injury, at least I'm at the point where I can *mostly* do what I want shredwise, and can see a full recovery on the horizon.

I spent most of yesterday doing work on a problem set, with the motivational spur being the promise of a shred session if I got done by a certain time. Sure enough, my love of footbag pushed me to complete the work, and around 7pm I got in a real good session with Luis and Pascal. We played in the room where we will host the Cornell Footbag Jam. I hadn't played there before, so I was real anxious to see how the surface is for footbag. To my happy relief, it's really excellent. It's like a thin layer of astroturf, which grips real well, and gives enough (cushions) that its real easy on the knees, yet at the same time doesn't give too much (it won't mess up your timing).

There was an event going on in the room, called the "hockey line," which is a Cornell tradition. Every year, hockey tickets go on sale, and students who want tickets stay in this room for a night and 2 days in the hopes of getting their lottery numbers called. It's a big party really, where people bring music, scrabble, homework, pillows, etc and order in food. So naturally we picked it as a prime spot to showcase footbag and possibly gain some recruits.

By 7 pm on Sunday, there were still a lot of people left. Unfortunately, we didn't get too much interest. I blame this partially on the fact that only 3 of us were there, so we couldn't play 4 square. We warmed up for a good 20 minutes by playing lightly in long pants, in the hopes that we'd be less intimidating. It was a fun warmup. I like the challenge of playing in long pants; it makes me work my downtime components and make my windows really big.

After warming up and not getting any real interest, we decided we may as well just play seriously. We switched into shorts, swapped out the sandbag for my Mirken bag, and spent the next 2 hours playing like a normal shred. Like I said, I really liked the playing surface. I think we all played really well, but then, I may have just had a lot of fun because it was such a nice change from studying all day. Actually, earlier in the day I had taken a small break to watch the Ryan Mulroney Special vid that Eli put out. I really enjoyed that vid, but it made me a little sad to learn that Eutopia is never coming out. It would have been nice to be on a DVD with my own section, so I could pop it into a DVD player in the future and reminisce about when I was young and having fun at the first Worlds in Europe. I guess I have Sick03 for that, but I think Eli had some better footage of me.

Aaaaaanyway, the point is that I had the Mulroney special in my head for most of the session, which inspired me to do some combos with tricks ending on insides, as well as some symposium stuff.

Highlights:

*blurry whirl-flurry
*bs fog to a strong, long string
*random midstring wauxpin
*bs bed
*whirling swirl-pdx drifter-torque. Thought it was styly.
*legeater ending on inside, to swirl ending on other foot, in the middle of a string with a bunch of other tricks ending on inside.
*butterfly kick to spinning clipper in the middle of lots of strings.
*nearly got rubberman midstring randomly.
*pdx blender bsos! Always enjoy that.

Luis's clippers are a lot better lately too. He doesn't set them as high, and so he can do clip-set mirages a lot more consistently. Pascal played well too. His string length has gone up notably. Don't know if its due to his new G-Units, his increased playing lately, or his switch from glasses to contacts. Whatever, its good. His first legbeater and tapdown as well.

While we were playing, we'd occasionally catch whiff of real delicious-smelling buffalo wings, so after the shred we went to the wings place for dinner. It really really hit the spot. Towards the end of dinner, we had a funny little interaction.

Pascal: *reaches for a buffalo wing that I had half-eaten*
Luis: Yo, Ken took a bite out of that already.
Ken: I don't mind.
Pascal: Yeah, but Ken has cooties.
Luis: *takes sip of his drink*
Ken: Actually, it's pronounced "herpes."
Luis: *spits drink laughing.*

We couldn't stop laughing for the next minute or so, me because of the fact that Luis spat his drank laughing, and Pascal and Luis for the joke plus Luis' spit take.

Good times indeed. :)

Yesterday I had something of a "breakout" session. It was the first session since Boston that I felt healthy, and that I was really back in the zone, shredding as hard as I wanted to. It felt so good. Beyond just the joy of hitting tricks, there was also that relief that I had recovered, and that I could look forward to a normal shred future as opposed to one compromised by injury. It may seem like I'm overreacting, but after playing for 9 years, and reaching an age where very few people still play near their peak (I'm 26.5), I see every injury as potentially career-ending.

We set up the session pretty last-minute, so for the first hour or so it was just me and Pascal. Luis joined us after that, but I got most of my good stuff done in the first hour or so. I love teaching footbag to people, and I love playing foursquare too, but it's important for me to have the occasional hardcore session where I just focus on playing for myself and pushing my own limits.

Lots of highlights:

*slapping mirage bsos, with atom smasher x2 in the seal.
*blurriest-pdx blender both sides, missed bsos (starting on diff sides) a slew of times. Probably need to work on making flip blurriest more reliable.
*vortex-drifter-drifter
*ripwalk-pdx blender bsos, with bl. whirl bsos in the seal.
*blurry whirl-WHAT!?
*blurry whirl-pdx blender bsos, with ps whirl bsos in the seal.
*predator
*a run with fury, flurry, and janiwalker, nearly sealed with blurriest bsos.
*tomahawk-pdx blender.
*pdx drifter-pdlo-dimwalk repeat to ducking butterfly-sidewalk repeat to barfly-pdx whirl-pdx whirl-barfly to some more contacts. But the fourteen unique tripless beginning felt great.
*drifter x20
*diving clip-gyro clip repeat to ducking clip-spin clip repeat to ducking osis. So 9 unique dexless.
*atomic gyro clipper? Like a tapping ss osis, but the osis was crispy. So atomic spinning near clipper. Hit it a few times, feels weird.

I feel like I'm back. Woo ha!

I'm really happy to read that Eli has enough footage of you that would be used for Eutopia to do a DVD section. That means that he will probably make a Specail out of it at some point. :D

I dunno if I'd come to that conclusion. My impression was that he released Ryan's section because it was already complete, and the big positive response got him to edit the Ales section. But I wouldn't count on a special of me being released soon, unless he had already finished editing it all. And considering all the footage he had of me, that might have taken longer than others. I'd love to see my section from Eutopia, but I don't expect it anytime soon.

Lately it's been pretty crazy work-wise at grad school. I've managed to sneak in a couple sessions lately, but up until last night, nothing too notable shred-wise. Just some fun club sessions and a talent show, which I will write about later (maybe in the Cornell blog). Last night though, I had a pretty intense 2-man session with Pascal. I started off playing real well, had a long and frustrating middle segment, and then finished real well.

Highlights:

*25 drifters (from Friday's session)

*blender-pdx torque.
*janiwalker-ripwalk very cleanly.
*blurry whirl-flurry-pixie whirl.
*blurry whirl-flurry... on my flipside! :) I managed to hit this twice, but couldn't get bsos either time.
*I randomly hit this drill midstring, without even realizing it was a drill: clipper dlo-dimwalk-pdlo-dimwalk repeat.

Then I worked on fearless for a while. My previous fearless record was 8, I think (probably buried in my blog around 7 months ago), but I had hit a 6 string that overlapped with that 8 string, that would get me 10 unique total. I hadn't worked on fearless in quite a while though, so it was a bit of a change, re-teaching myself how to pace it all and conserve energy at key spots. This was pretty frustrating, but I kept my mental game and stayed at it, and capped the evening off by hitting 9 unique fearless! :D I was pretty happy with it, because it was very controlled; even the ninth trick was solid, and I had a good look at the tenth. It just wasn't placed properly. But I could just have easily joined the Ten Club last night, and I feel confident I have a good shot at achieving that goal in the next few weeks.

My combo was: alpine legbeater-bedwetter-darkwalk-fog-phoenix-blurry whirl-bl. whirl-ps whirl-pdx torque, and then I missed pdx blender. Definitely do-able.

I also felt kinda proud that I came so close, given how old I am. Almost everybody on the 10 unique fearless list is under drinking age (Clavens, Vasek, Moir, Honza, Landes, Penske, Aleksi, etc.). The only person who is close to my age who can get 10 unique fearless is probably Lon Smith, and maybe Sunil a couple years back when he was my age (though I'm not entirely sure if he or Mulroney ever did get 10 unique fearless). So I definitely felt good that I am close, even though I'm 26.5.

Man, straight up exhausted today. Been taking it easy study-wise these last couple days, to blow off steam from that crush of work. But I need to get back on track soon, cause more tests and papers loom.

Last night we had footbag club, and everybody kinda seemed a step slow. Dunno what it was. Luis brought his camera and got a couple good strings of mine, so hopefully we'll put those on a video soon and I can start showing some highlights rather than just writing them. After shred I went to Pascal's and watched some Futurama.

Today I was bad, and broke my promise to not play basketball before the Cornell tourney. I happened to be in the basketball gym to do an errand, and some dudes playing pickup asked me to be the tenth. So I played two games, and happily came away without any injuries. I even hit the game-winning shot in the first game! After basketball I threw some frisbee with random people, then went to juggling club and had more fun there. I set a new personal record for juggling clubs: 47 catches.

We cancelled our regular friday shred, but didn't send out an email cause we figured nobody would show without an email. Wrong. Ran into 2 club members who showed, and another guy who wanted to play too. Nuts. We're gonna get in a shred tomorrow, and hopefully hammer out a new schedule for our club meetings. I'm thinking something like Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Gonna go watch "A Scanner Darkly" tonight, which I'm pretty excited about, since I really like Philip K. Dick, and I also enjoyed Waking Life.

Fully aware this post kicks off a new page, so I'll try and be positive, but its tough to do when modified has been bringing me down.

Looking at the big picture, footbag life is going really really well. I'm playing several times a week. I have good friends to play with regularly. I'm over my injury. I won an iPod nano at a talent show 2 weeks ago. In less than 2 weeks, I'm performing in a show along with the best juggler in the world. I hit 9 unique fearless last week. My club will soon be able to upload videos to the web. Things are definitely very good.

At the same time, I'm often frustrated by the way people in the online footbag community act sometimes. Maybe its that we're all spoiled, and most people can't remember the days when the only online community was an e-mail listserv and watching videos on footbag.org, which got updated once a year. The fact that the modified forums have become so big, with new videos almost every day, a wealth of tips, a network for trading and selling items, and blogs that connect our thoughts and aspirations together... and that so few people appreciate how lucky they are to have this...it just makes me sad.

Is modified lamer than it was 2 years ago? Maybe. Or maybe you have just changed in those 2 years. I still look at things like Jorden's $50,000 talent show, or that reporter who slandered Rory Dawson, and I see the potential that modified has. Would Jorden have made finals without such an enthusiastic and readily mobilizable community at hand? Maybe, but I doubt our help hurt him. Would that reporter have been flooded with emails if not for the thread made on modified? I highly doubt it. Would I e-mail or call my friends in Australia, Canada, NZ, Japan, etc and keep up with their progress and lives if there were no modified? Probably not, but blogs allow me to drop little notes and stay informed of whats up with them.

And the videos section... when I hear people complain about modified, I just wish I could bring them back to 1998 with me, and make them wait the 8-12 months between videos with me. Is modified perfect? No. I think a lot of the blame goes to people who don't appreciate its merits and took it as a given. When somebody gives you something for free, its a lot easier to shit on it than when you actually understand the value of what you have. I sometimes wonder why Mike Hansen and Emily put in so much work protecting modified from spambots when modified's own members decide they'd rather spam the forums themselves.

Don't even get me started about the people who make a big public show about "quitting modified 4evaaaaa!" and then post every month about how modified sucks.

Last night I watched a vid I hadn't seen in a long time. It was my dropless Shred30 from Tokyo Shredder Gathering 2, and it really made me feel better about footbag. http://www.footbag.org/gallery/show/2843
I've scored better in Shred30 since then, but that really had to be one of the best moments of my footbag career. I'm really glad somebody got it on film so I can relive it every now and again. Even now I feel the love.
