"Footbag? Where's that going to take you in life?"

As to Quote Edmonton's Fine Scott McKeen

I read this thinking, where has Footbag Taken me outside of Edmonton?

After Winning Intermediate Doubles Net in 98, I hopped on a promotional tour with Snickers for Footbag, who paid me solid cash to tour Ireland for 3 months and live like a rock star with my own car, driver, pad, and bank roll...

Where Else?

After Discovering Takraw (As an offshoot of Footbag), we ended up winning the national championships in 03 (after Finishing 3rd in 02, and we finished 2nd in 04), Takraw Canada was sponsored by a group in Malaysia, so they paid for us to come to the Takraw Worlds Championships there. Again, all free... We even ended up tied for 5th and made some prize money...

It doesnt seem like a lot, but So far Footbag has sent me 10,000 Miles around the World among other things...

(Not to mention the friends Ive met along the way and the fun Ive had at a variety of tournaments)
E-mail him this, please. That's awsome.

The whole deal about Rory being a failure and needing to go back to school ( :? :? :? :? :!: :!: ) because he's associated with footbag?? Steve Golburg is currently living in california in a mansion right on the ocean and he travels around the world fucking CONSTANTLY and he's extremely educated. He is one of the most influencial figures in Footbag, and he is INFINATELY more succesful then this pos journalist.

I'd like to write to this guy too, but right now all I can think to say is that he's completey:
http://www.footbag.org/gallery/show/10241
rediculous to the max.

I hate minds like his.

I want to send this guy an email, but it'd just be immature flaming, so I'll let you guys handle it. Honestly though, somebody in Edmonton just beat this guy up.

hey,

here's a little background information about my initial experience with the contest (originally from my blog)
Well, I won the first round of "Edmonton's Got Talent" tonight. It was a pretty relaxed show put on by a local comedy club. The audience consisted of about 30-40 people including the judges and performers. I was up against a bunch of comedians, a humming group, and a magician. The stage was kinda sketchy at 4feetx8feet. The other thing that sucked was the lack of backstage. I had to just sit there and cool down for 20 minutes before it was my turn to perform. I managed to pull through my improvised routine with about 4 drops. Luckily, the judges had never seen anything like footbag before. The general consensus was that I had "blown them away". After the judge's words, the comedian MC asked me to try and hit my biggest trick. I went ahead and hit clip set symple far pickup. First try. Crowd went craaaaazy. Super adrenaline rush! Awesome evening.
When I first heard about the article I was amused. Then I read the article and it kind of bummed me out for a while. Now, I don't really care too much about it. My main problem with the article is how deragatory he was towards footbag and myself without any basis for his unconstructive criticism. The other problem I had with the article is at the actually contest he agreed with the other judges and said that I had blown him away. I received no feedback to my face where I could have defended myself. Instead he chose the cowardly route and expressed his lack of understanding by publishing an article in the biggest paper in the city.

He made me sound like a high school drop out that just bums around and plays hacky sack all day. For those who don't know me very well, I'll tell you a bit about myself. I'm a third year mechanical engineering student at the university of alberta. I've been playing footbag for about 3 years and while I'm not the best footbag player in the world, I'm not the worst either. I volunteer every friday night at the YMCA, teaching a drop footbag/juggling drop in class for teens and I'm also vice president of Alberta Footsports (our provincial footbag organiation).
Footbag? Where's that going to take you in life? "Ladies and gentlemen, Radio City Music Hall presents: Footbag Boy."

I don't think so. Get back to school, Rory Dawson.
I found his comment above particularily offending. Footbag has given me some of the most rewarding experiences of my life. For example: I've met so many awesome people, been to places all over NA, enjoyed teaching hundreds of kids and adults about footbag, and finally just the sheer excitment of pushing my body to the limits. Footbag is my outlet and relaxation, my method in the madness. I love footbag. The big irony of the situation is while this whole article thing was blowing up, I was having to pull all nighters to finish a bunch of engineering reports/assignments. I've gotten about 14 hours of sleep in the last 96 hours. Get back to school indeed.

I guess your letters had an effect on him though (I found the post on the front page of .org particularily entertaining), because he called me today (and also several of my friends and family members trying to track me down). He basically apologized for his slanderings. Apparently, he had attempted to inject some "humour" into his article and hadn't properly considered how much it would offend people. He admitted his mistake and is now writing another article ... for the monday paper I believe, that will show footbag from a (hopefully) positive perspective. I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt on that one, but I'm not expecting too much from the article anyways. I gave him a short phone interview explaining some stuff about net and freestyle footbag, and basically outlining how footbag has been awesome for me. A photographer came to our YMCA session tonight, and he took some action pictures of me footbagging. If I get one more kid who comes to check out footbag at the YMCA then it will have been worth it.

That's really awesome Rory. I got a google alert about this a while ago and have to admit I found the article hilarious. When I saw the headline at footbag.org I did send him an email - which was me attempting to flame him with the same style of writing as he had in the article.

I think many of you missed the point he was making in his article - which wasn't that footbag didn't take a huge amount of hardwork - just that it's not entertaining to watch.

Anyway it's a fantastic result in the end :)

G'day Scott,

You describe footbag as a talentless sport but what talents do you
have? Journalism? Have you won any awards? Do you write for Time
magazine? Or do you write for some tiny paper that runs with
"invasion of the beetles" on the front page? Gee you sound like the
pinnacle of success.

Congratulations on angering a community while winning no supporters
with your ignorant and mindless comments. I'm sure you've got other
emails but I wanted to let you know I've been playing footbag for five
years and now I get paid at least $300 per hour to do demos. The most
I've been paid for a single demo is $6000 an hour. Not bad for
somebody doing something as impressive as hand farts. I guess maybe
I'm underestimating your friends ability to make hand farts.

Cheers mate,

Rory,

Thanks for the update -- that's great to know we made a difference with our letter-writing campaign! Glad I could kick this one off. :-)

Note: you guys can find out about important footbag news if you just subscribe to the news feed from footbag.org.
(Click "Add to Google Reader" to subscribe to the feed.)

I wrote my letter (below) on Wednesday -- I think it was about a day before all the rest of your e-mails started pouring in. To answer someone's question above -- no, I didn't get a reply. :-(

Scott,

I'm going to make this short.

Your assault on footbag as a sport is unprofessional at best.

Rory may not have been very good for all I know (I have no idea), but to say the sport of footbag is not a talent and to equate it to childish hand-farts is beyond disingenuous -- it's down-right lazy journalism on your part. You should take a hiatus and try to find your joie-de-vivre. 'Cause somewhere along the way you lost yours, and it's hurting something I love.

I am the founder and former executive director of the non-profit international governing body of the sport of footbag (IFPA, Inc.). You may think it's stupid, but to me, this is a great sport, and much more difficult and worthwhile than many other "sports" out there. Of course you're welcome to your opinion; I just feel you went a little overboard here and I think it bears on your journalistic integrity.

While I don't make a life of footbag (I can hear you saying, "This guy needs to get a life") I do have a serious passion for this sport. If you look at some of the videos on my website (footbag.org) you will have to come to terms with this. Check out the first video on this page when you get a chance:

http://www.footbag.org/gallery/showset/worlds-06

As for my "real" life? I'm an engineering manager at Google. I like to think of myself as a smart person. I like to think that smart people don't mistake hand-farts for sports.

I would appreciate a retraction.

Note to self: Insult footbag fraternity at your own peril
Avalanche of angry e-mail after column compared activity with making rude hand sounds

Scott McKeen
The Edmonton Journal

A new reader of this column writes:
Mr. McKeen:
Please die.
Thank you,
Andrew.

Well, Andrew, thanks for taking the time to write. It's always nice to hear from readers. And thanks for the suggestion. I'll keep it in mind. Some of you know that I enjoy reader response columns. They're fun, intellectually invigorating and a great way to clean the clutter from the e-mail inbox. Here's one, from Austin: "Why don't you just shove that (censored) article up your (censored), you (censored)."

Wow, it really was a great week for reader input. My column of last Wednesday inspired people from all over the planet to write in. The column was about my experiences as a judge in the Edmonton's Got Talent Contest at the Comic Strip comedy club. I mentioned that one of the competitors, Rory Dawson, made quite an impression with the audience and other judges. Dawson is a footbag competitor, who expertly juggles a hacky sack with his feet.

I also mentioned how Comic Strip owner Rick Bronson compares my judging style to the blunt and caustic Simon Cowell, of American Idol fame. Maybe I got a little caught up in the comparison. I suggested Dawson's footbag talent was little better than making potty sounds with your hands (hand fluffing) or making the Vulcan peace sign.

And ping, ping, ping went my e-mail. I received notes from as far away as Texas, Germany, France and Australia. Turns out footbag is a well-organized, popular sport around the world.

One player posted my column to an international footbag website. Thus, John dispatched to me a brief, to-the-point note. "I only e-mailed you to say one thing," wrote John. "(Blank) off!"

To the uninitiated -- that would be me, last week -- footbag is the competitive sport that evolved from hacky sack. Footbag now branches into two main disciplines. One is freestyle, where players are judged on the calibre and difficulty of their juggling tricks. The second is footbag net, where players kick and spike a ball over a net. It's like foot volleyball.

These tricks and kicks take years to master and involve high levels of skill. If you don't believe it, check out some of the video footage on the Internet.

But is it a talent? Well, my new e-mail friends in the footbag nation argue quite convincingly that it is a talent. And they found a flaw in my logic. I'd argued that the word "talent" is more suited to people in the arts - musicians, singers, visual artists, actors and comics. Yet I also mentioned Wayne Gretzky's talent. But if I believe an athlete like Gretzky has talent, why not a footbag star? Point made. Point taken.

I regret naming Rory Dawson. While public figures are fair game in this column, I've made it unofficial policy to keep the gloves off citizens. Oops. Sorry Rory. Turns out that Rory is a gracious guy. Not only is he a skilled footbag player, but he's in his third year of mechanical engineering at the U of A. He achieved honours marks last year. Rory also volunteers at the YMCA. You guessed it. He teaches footbag to children.

What did I learn from all this? First, footbag players are not just committed, but they're enthusiastic e-mail writers. Second, talent isn't an easy thing to define. Third, if you dish it out, prepare to take your lumps.

One footbag correspondent said my judging style isn't up to that of Simon Cowell. He said I'm more like one of the judges on America's Got Talent.

The judge?

David Hasselhoff.

OK, ouch.

Good to see that the 'call to arms' was heeded and effective in the end. You couldnt really ask for a better result!

Although its a pity some people insisted on writing such blatantly harsh and untactful emails like 'Fuck off'. He could have used them as ammunition against us if he felt like it.

I think it is fantastic that he presented us the way he did. I fully accept that (sort of) apology.

Ian, "..if he felt like it"? You gotta be kidding me. Of all the letters he chose to print, he only published redacted versions of the really inflamatory ones in his piece.

I'll think twice next time I urge everyone to send e-mails to someone. I expected people would use a more responsible approach to this. Letter-writing is usually meant to show the receiver that we're better than they think we are. Just telling them to fuck off isn't exactly selling our point.

Next time can just the responsible people participate in the letter-writing campaign?

I'd like to think it's because enough of you did in fact write respectable letters that he was at least somewhat nice in his retraction. But to be clear, Mr. McKeen didn't exactly post a retraction -- he posted a warning to others who might assault the footbag "nation" that we are not to be messed with. I don't know if I like that... But hey, any news about footbag is good news -- controversial or not. :-)

Interesting. I actually explicitly said in my email that he should "seriously consider calling or emailing Rory to apologize". I'm glad to hear that he did.

HEY! Who did this???? It wasn't me. My email to him was stern yet I made sure not to be rude or condenscending. I would expect my crew to have a little more tact. We'll have to have a little chitchat on how to solve problems constructively and not stooping to other peoples level at the next shred session. You gotta take that high road.

Well gang, despite some twists and turns I think overall we had a positive outcome here... and we learned some important lessons. The main one is not to underestimate the power of speaking up. We saw an injustice out there and we TOOK ACTION. While some of us may have been more well-mannered than others we made a believer out of one journalist, and he posted an article reflecting that.

Good job everyone.

I thought his second article makes footbaggers look like a bunch of immature kids. I was ashamed by those letters he mentions. Especially because they're largely the impression people will get of footbag who read that article. The readers can't see what we do, just that we write mindless insults to people. Luckily Rory Dawson is a champ and is definitely the saving grace of the story. While maybe the story puts an overall good spin on footbag, I don't think it's anything to be proud of. Hopefully those three letters were the only letters like that, or maybe he made them up to save face. I doubt that is the case and I think this is a lesson that in the future it would be best not to openly ask "the community" to send emails of outrage to people when we get that kind of response. Both the request here and at .org urged people to maintain decorum and yet people chose to ignore that part of the request and brought all of us down. When you're making public statements or statements that could become public relating to footbag, I think it is crucial to consider what kind of image you'll be presenting to people who have never seen footbag but have read your comment. We're just lucky that the story was about somebody as credible as Rory and not some bum like me or there would be nothing positive in the article.
