Bush signs into law the Military Commissions Act of 2006

Post by morsecode »

So the House and Senate passed this thing a couple of weeks ago, and no surprise that Bush signed it today. I haven't read it myself, but I've read 8 or so articles that break it down, and the Wikipedia page on it gave a lot of good information (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_C ... ct_of_2006).

Basically, it rewrites the judicial process for trying "unlawful enemy combatants," which one would think would be foreign terrorists right? Well, it actually means anyone that an appointed military tribunal deems an "unlawful enemy combatant," including US citizens, who can be taken before said tribunal without being charged 8O . This tribunal can only be appointed by the President or the Secretary of Defense. It also nullifes habeas corpus, the fundamental principle which protects you from being detained without being charged with a crime. And there's a lot of other nasty shit in it: no speedy trial, no Geneva convention protections, no jury, the use of illegally obtained evidence or hearsay in trial, and more.

Olberman already did a segment on it called "why does habeas corpus hate america"(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6prNQZmmuI).

I've heard nothing but overwhelmingly negative responses to this act; does anyone support it? Am I getting a slanted view on it, because I don't see how anybody could vote for this as I understand it. If we have such a strong case against terrorists, why can't we try them the good ol' fashioned way. I'm confused.

The radical right has enough presence in the congress and of course the white house to be able to pass this sort of horseshit. There is absolutely no way that the Supreme Court could deem this thing Constitutional. I don't have much faith in the US government, but I have enough to believe that the Supreme Court could never approve something so disgustingly unconstitutional.

Is it 2008 yet?

I was talking about this with my Dad today and about how it got little to no real media coverage.

I honestly think this is the worst thing he has done so far. Just taking a big ole shit all over the constitution.

In my understanding, while fighting against "evil" peoples in Iraq trying to restore freedoms, he's slowly widdling away from us everything he's supposedly fighting for.

Agreed Danny.

Not that it matters. They do all that shit anyway. They've had an aussie at guantanamo for 5 years or so now and they still haven't charge him with anything. It's disgusting. And I'm disgusted in John Howard for being a spineless worm, it's about time he stopped sucking old george off and took care of his own citizens.

It's probably a tool to use against American patriots, while allowing a suitcase nuke to explode, thus advancing a new law against Americans.

I will read some of the law first, before flying off the handle like they do over at http://infowars.com :)

Wow, I actually didn't even read your post. I'd seen the same video earlier, and just posted it automatically. My mistake!

That IS a bunch of horse shit...let's get these republicans out of office! Apparently contitutional rights mean nothing anymore. Not like they're what this country was founded on or anything...not like it's supposed to be the unquestioned backbone of our society...Sheesh

My faith in the US government has long since perished! Bush is a joke...that new law bill/law/policy is a joke.
