holly shreds on video

Post by PegLegHolly »

so yeah, brian and i had a good session today and we got it on video. i couldnt figure out how to take the sound out so half is without sound and half has music... its weird.

i also couldnt figure out how to make it smaller. and im not gonna try cause im tired as shit.

so yeah, here it is. 19 seconds of pure awsome-ness. 16.6MB. its uploaded to my own server so it should download fine. i dont have a reason to pay the ifpa fee yet so its not on footbag.org.

its a .mov

what im looking for is feedback. there is no one around here to shred with. so please, tips, props, and questions are great!

first part of clip: symp mirage
second part of clip: a sick 3 in the works. mirage>legover>legover (i didnt get it sealed yet)

edit: new url and file type

OK I had to open that in Quicktime because Windows Media Player couldn't read it.

Symposium Mirage: nice move. good use of the 90 degree magic hop turn. To make this move easier, you need to get a slightly bigger hop for the dex. I was watching the video and it looks like your dex foot gets no more than 2" off the ground, which makes the move considerably more difficult. Try setting a little bit higher (to give yourself time) and then dipping your weight a bit and bending the knee of your dexing leg a little more after the set to sort of set up a spring. You're sort of flat footed and don't have any launch power on the jump. This also causes the catch to be "rakey" at the end which you want to avoid so you can link it into another move. The knee bending will let you get the symposium "super jump" to help with the dex and even moreso later on with moves like Symp Illusion. Keep at it, but be careful, too much symposium in one session can put undue stress on your muscles and joints.

Strings: Only feedback is to simplify the motions of the individual moves and keep it more controlled. You look like you are exerting yourself a little too much. The only real way to fix that is to keep praticing the trick (like say, mirage), focus on keeping it slow and controlled. mirage > legover > rpt is one of my favorite drills. Keep at it! The more controlled and simplified you can get the moves, the longer your string length will get.

Keep shreddin'! Oh and hopefully, if there is a New Orleans Jam/Tournament in the spring, I can kick with you and Brian :)

In my opinion there shouldn't be very much rotation at all in a symp mirage. By rotating and catching the bag behind the dexing leg the trick becomes more of a crossbody rake (still a cool trick).

I'de like to suggest a drill that will help with the symp mirage and combo attempt...

ss toe x n > op toe x n > rpt

where n is an odd number. Start off with n=1 and work your way up as high as you can go. Push your endurance. Make sure you get consistant sets. They should have the same height and go straight up and straight down. Try playing around with different set heights.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention about the different kinds of toe sets... Just going to make a quick video to try and explain better...

VIDEO: http://www.footbag.org/gallery/show/10374

1) first part of video was me doing the above drill with n=3. I'm setting pretty high (chest), but for things like mirage/legover/pickup, knee to thigh height works best. The easiest time to do the dex is when the bag is at the peak.

2) In the second part of the video I'm trying to explain two different ways of doing a toe set. One is where the bag is set outside of the knee (knee pointed in towards body) and the other is where the bag is set inside of the knee (knee pointed out away from body). I noticed in your video you tend to set the bag to the outside of the knee. Both ways are good, but certain tricks are easier with each style. (you can also set the bag entirely in front of the knee, but then it's very far away from the body and hard to dex around)

3) Next, I do a legover with with both styles of toe sets. As you can see it's much easier to do a legover (or any opposite trick) when the bag is set inside of the knee. In fact most tricks are actually easier to do when the bag is set inside of the knee (mirage, legover, ss legover, pickup, illusion, ss illusion). The only tricks that are easier to set outside of the knee are same side in to out tricks (i.e. ss pickup, ss mirage).

4) In this part of the vid I do a fairy set and then a pixie set. Fairy sets are done with the bag set outside of the knee. Pixie sets are done with the bag set inside of the knee. It is important to learn both ways if you want to be able to do both sets and all downtime toe dexterities.

5) Some tips for mirages. Try to keep your body facing in the same direction before and after the trick. This will make hitting the next trick in the combo much easier. The way to accomplish this is to bend your knee in towards your body (by using your hips). A good indicator to know if you're bending your knee in enough, is when you look down you should be able to see your delaying foot. (I tried to demonstrate this in the video)

6) Some tips for symposium mirage. Again try to keep your body facing in the same direction before and after the trick. This is a little bit more difficult without a plant. It's all about weight transfer. Set with the bag inside your knee (KEY! otherwise you will increase the amount of jumping involved) then jump laterally in the opposite direction of the dexterity, keeping your upper body in the same position, then jump back in the other direction to complete the dexterity (see video for example). A technique that helps with the weight transfer is to bend your delaying leg behind you while you are jumping (like when I point to my leg in the vid). Be sure to bring it back in front of you for the delay. With practise the delay will become less "rakey".

good luck!

ok im trying to give you some tips:

keep your head up and the back more straight! you´ll get a better overview about where the bags going..
second thing, the set:
try to not make the set too high (its about chest height after the mirage). try to get the setting foot down earlier. it looks like your lifting the leg up very much, instead try to do a clean, controlled delay movement with bending the support leg for catch and bending up for releasing it.
the faster you can get your foot back on the ground, the more time you have for the trick! you can do this very extremely and then slow it down a bit to get the right rythm.
i find Rory´s video very helpful. what is the background music?

good luck!

That Symp Mirage looked more like a Crossbody Rake....... If you want advice from me I would say try to spin less and set higher.

I don't mean to sound like a dick about this.... but I'm picky with Symp Mirages

Yeah, please disregard any alleged "magicalness" associated with turning 90% on a symposium mirage. The less you turn the cleaner this move will be. This will also force you to learn to pivot and set more precisely. Also, you don't necessarily need to jump very high for a symposium mirage. The higher you jump, the more energy you exert, the less consistent the move will be, and the harder the move will be to play out. However, that's not to say a symposium mirage can't be made into a snazzy trick with a huge set.

It's just 10 bucks for a lifetime membership now. It's worth it for the virtually unlimited video and picture hosting.
