I havent posted in a while so Ill make this a nice little butter blend of cool stuff as of late.
I came back to Bethlehem today for thanksgiving break. its funny how we celebrate the pilgrims, even though they were such dicks. I saw some thing on history channel about it. they would just go dig up indian graves and loot them and shit. whatever.
anyway, its weird being back in town. i mean ive been back once since i went to university, but i didnt really go anywhere that time. today i went to the place i used to work and people looked at me different. it was weird. either ive changed or the whole town has. i think its the first idea.
i went to the post office and mailed out 5 bags. it makes me happy to send out bags, but it makes me nervous because i dont want to give people shit that sucks. i havent found the perfect method yet, but i think the ones i sent out today are definatley good freestyle bags. hell, for 20 bucks i dont think people can be that bummed.
i came home and found my new pair of green gunits. its funny because latley i havent wanted to play in the shoe. it breaks down like this. this is davids comparison of lavers vs. gunits, which probably should be posted in the equiptment thread, but it can go here.
LAVER vs. GUNIT - using different aspects of footbag to determine the better shoe.
Looks - this is all opinion. however, i think the laver looks better than the gunit, except the all black unit. they look stealthy.
Comfort - i think the shoes have basically the same level of comfort.
Flexibility - the laver is much more flexible than the gunit. this makes you have control over the sole of the shoe, and you can flex it into more of a pocket. the shoe responds to you. the gunit only does this when the sole is worn down enough, and by that time you probably have busted through the top layer anyway.
Traction - gunit hands down. The gunit grips 10x better, but by the time the gunit is in its prime playing condition (the sole flexible) you probably lost all the traction anyway.
Effect on Style - Everyone looks better in lavers style wise. I watch my cornell special and then us open footage and i think its a world of difference. the only thing i like about units are that they look like skate shoes and give your feet a bigger look, which makes it more like, evened out if you are a taller individual. but i definatley think people look better in lavers style wise.
Inside - the gunit inside is superior to the laver. if you dont have super crank, you want the unit inside. however, you can get really used to it and this makes things like mobius hard in lavers. it always takes me at least 15 minutes to redial my osis.
Toe - the laver blows the unit away. The unit is ok, but i just love the streamlined toe of the laver. I play with walls on in both shoes.
Outside - im not jon schiender. I dont care about outsides.
Durability - this is weird. my units have lasted a year in a half. thats amazing. lavers last me about 8 months. but on the other hand i feel like if you are a good player with good form your shoes should last, dare i say, upwards of 3 years. this is because you arent putting abrasion on the sole, and you are always playing on your toes. vasek used those ratty ass lavers for years. who knows. i do know as my style improved my shoes lasted longer. but this makes no sence because bevier rocks and eats shoes like, every 5 months. who knows, maybe this has no basis. BUT units last way longer even if your style blows. except some people have problems with the toe flapping up or something. mine is starting to, but its not that bad really.
Bulkiness : the units are bulky at first, but you adjust. they get lighter as you wear down the sole. lavers are perfectly streamlined. duh.
Overall view: I think they are equal. But i think depending on what you value you can sway either way. If you want to bust hard and dont care about being a sloppy player, buy units. if you want to be precise and drop inside stalls that arent well placed, buy lavers. if you want to be super fast and quick and agile and have good form and know that all your tricks are on point, get lavers. if you want a durable shoe that will grip beyond belief, and look cool, get units. ive always been torn between the shoes, and i think i will continue alternating between them, but for some reason latley i am leaning torwards lavers.

ok and heres another thing. if you have been playing for less than a year and you are giving shoe advice, stop. im not pointing fingers (or should i say toes) but i dont know how the hell anyone can know about units vs climas vs lavers if you cant hit at least a 5>5>5. there are just things that you cant know when your only doing clippers. mobius/marius/torque, all those tricks are such a different ballgame than 3's. when you are comming down off a bad set for a mobius, your inside makes a huge diff with bad form. with a laver you will drop a crap mobius, with a unit you could probably step out of it. but maybe you should grab crappy sets. maybe your equiptment should make it better. who knows. its just pointless that people own all these different shoes when they arent guiltless. theres no need. get good in lavers. that is the secret. if you can play in lavers, you can play in anything. i feel sorry for people who learn in gunits and become addicted to it, because im sure these people exist. and while im at it, major props to jorden because he can play in quantums and that inside has to be dead on. so obviously if your good you can switch back.
for sectional sake, i will write another entry later tonight about non shoe stuff.
and watch gym session. its better than half the videos out now and its already a year old.

Nice write-up about the differences between the two shoes. You asked for different opinions, so I thought I would post some, cause it beats the hell out of writing term papers.
For the record, I played in Lavers for something like 8 years. I've been playing in G-Units for just over a year now. I admit my bias up-front: I will never go back to Lavers because I prefer the Units so much more.
LAVER vs. GUNIT
Looks I like black shoes, so I leaned toward the G-Unit. Then again, there are now black lavers, but they are kinda hard to find. I think the completely black gs are the way to go, but I also like the black one with the white and red trim too. Shapewise, I like the bigger look of the Gs; they do like like cool street/skate shoes.
Comfort - hands down goes to G-Units. Maybe its the shape of my foot, but I couldn't really walk around all day in Lavers. It would squeeze my feet and hurt them. The Gs are super comfortable, all the time. I can use them as walk-around shoes, or for playing.
Flexibility - I agree that Lavers are more flexible. As Dave points out, this is also at the cost of durability. I don't find the flexibility really affects the playability too much for me.
Traction - g-units are definitely better, everybody agrees. Surfaces that previously were slippery death traps are now shreddable.
Effect on Style - I think that Lavers force you to play more precisely. You cant BS an osis in Lavers, but many times Units can hit a trick for you. So for beginners, I think Lavers are better, cause they will make you develop a better style.
Inside - insteps are better on G-Unit in terms of playing, but they can turn into a crutch too. All I know is that I drop less, which means I have more fun.
Toe - switching to Gs was an adjustment for toes, but I found it to be an easy transition. I can't say I noticed much difference at all between the two.
Outside - Uh, black leather gets less dirty than white mesh. So they just look better. Dunno about how they play.
Durability - This is a bit tricky. The soles of G-units are much more durable, so you won't burn a hole in the toes in 6 months like you can/will with China lavers. That said, the fabric of G6s sometimes tears off on the toes and insteps. Its fixable with sewing and crazy glue, but that shit never happened to me with Lavers. Considering how easy it is to fix G6 tears, vs having to replace Lavers when the sole wears down, I give the edge to the G6.
Bulkiness :The Gs are definitely bulky at first, but it doesn't make too much of a difference after a while. People need an adjustment period, but all I know is that now I can hit pretty much everything I could in Lavers, plus a whole lot more.

hey dave, how long are you off from school? do you want to shred? I can probably drive down on the weekend, and if the week would be better for you you could drive up here. Weekend starts thursday though.

Units have better overall support. So if you have feet problems, they can be better. At least, they didn't bother my arches as muchas lavers did(before I switched to arch support insoles.) Otherwise I agree.its just pointless that people own all these different shoes when they arent guiltless.

I think I can make a trip to PSU or Bethlehem. Those are the two places that struck my curiousity for some time. PSU, because some of the best freestylers go there (and I think one or two casual kickers visited NYFA, and Bethlehem because that's the home turf of the Cleaver.
January would be more comfortable for me, I guess. I'll have to see if there's some free time then. Or maybe later in the year when it gets warm, considering I might drop by during a break in the Spring. The possibility that I'll have to drop a semester in college and take up a full-time job to cover expenses could affect my plans. In any case, a visit to the DC man himself is a must.
Oh, and the bag I bought from you is seriously ill. It's very dope and responds very well. It's like a soft little pillow that whenever I do some hacky with it it hurts my feet sometimes (since I usually play with 47 gram bag, not 50+).

Tonight I got out my external harddrive and watched a lot of footage from back in the day. i watched my old vids. I watched a lot of jorden. Some random stuff. It made me quite nostalgic.
I look back at the begginings of my footbag career with a lot of fondness. I remember at the time hating being sucky, always wanting to hit that new trick so I could rise in the ranks. But when the ranks slim down and whos better is just a blur and an opinion, you sometimes wish you were just part of the pack. After watching some footage and realizing I cant do a lot of what was hip a year ago, I kinda realize maybe my level of play isnt as good as I thought.
I miss how every post on modified used to contains omething I didn't know. By now my opinions are so set its quite hard to change them. But I am breaking new ground I guess. I finally think fairy is cool. Took 3 years for that one.
I like watching people get better. I pushed Toolan a lot tonight. We were just hacking in jeans and it ended up being a fairly serious session by the end. I think I take the fun out of it sometimes for him. I'm not sure.
I miss Josh Benham and Chris Kovacs. I think the only person that can relate to me on that is Alex.
Footbag is weird now. Things are so different. I can't play with Danowski everyday. I can't take pride in a new trick when I shouldve hit it weeks ago. The moments of absolute happiness are very few. I had one last night. It's funny though, because I don't even care about telling people. I hit one of the biggest things in all of footbag clean last night and I don't even want to share it with the world. I would say footbag is a personal journey, and that justifies my behavior, but I don't know if thats true.
Perhaps its just the time of night.

I'm just kidding, but in all seriousness, I really enjoy the honesty with which you write in your blog; it's always a worthwhile read. Also, on the shoe topic, I just have to say that the G-units really do have a wider sole, which is good news for anyone who needs custom orthotics that don't fit properly in lavers (i.e. me).

I have been playing in lavers for the last year, or, since I started playing. After just recently accepting that I have a solid bop foundation, I moved onto g-units. I can say that the units seriously made up for the lack of crank in my ankles. I am though pleased that I learned my foundation on lavers, and then went to the units. I also recommend the mesh for two reasons. First, you mod the insides which doesn't make a HUGE boat on the side of your foot, so the crutch is not that dramatic. Secondly, you mod the insides so you don't have a huge discolored polygon on the of your foot; the colors stay consistent.

So its like midnight and I just woke up from a weird kind of nap. I ate a tuna sub and drank some weird cherry sprite shit. Probably wasnt a good idea because my digestive system will keep me up, but I think I can put up with being tired tommorow during class. Just note taking.
College is so much better than high school class wise. I love how 90% of classes dont matter, you just have to show up. Like you just have to write shit, and then study a shitload before tests. So much better than what I did in highschool. I guess going to a big university is a good fit for me in that aspect.
So I've been playing a lot of footbag. I played about 9 hours over the past 3 days. I'm pretty sore, and it feels good. I think I go pretty hard for all the time I play, which is good. I hit a nice 17 fearless today with some weirder tricks (through flip fog, flip pixie dod, bedwetter). Trying to break the patterns I normally throw. Hit one cool combo: nemisis>pdx. torquescrew.
Bevier has been playing well too. I sucked today so I kinda was not paying attention to his game, but he had some busts that were sick. There was one run where 30 contacts in he freezed an osis, and then totally rewound into a mobius, it looked really good. osis>mobius isnt too hard, but its kinda rare.
I'm making a few bags recently, but I'm not too happy with them. I did make a really good one that I'm sending out to Zac Miley because he gave me a bag a while back. Right now I'm making 2 bags at the same time with different gather levels to see which one I want to stick with. Kind of a weird experiment.

So I have like, half the calender pretty solid, but people really haven't sent me shit.
I have to work out housing for next year. I want to live on campus but the 3 kids I'm going to live with dont really want to. They want an apartment. I just need good shred space.
My thanksgiving was alright. Didn't kick with Toolan enough. Didn't eat hardly any turkey. Sometimes I think about going vegitarian. But shit, that tuna tasted good. Sorry little buddy, maybe if you and bread didn't get along so well I could let you keep swimming.
I saw the movie Do the right thing. It was really good. It is about like, ethnic relations and shit. It's pretty cool. The cops kill this black kid at the end and the whole town goes nuts. Pretty crazy. It's weird, because the movie comes off a little anti-black, even though the director is black (i think?). I don't know, its just a big statement that violence is wrong. It was weird, at teh end of the movie there were some quotes from mlk and malcom X, and everyone in the class just stood there in silence (most had risen to leave since it was credits). Everyone was just kind of moved I guess. It's a nice feeling, bonding with 100 people in some random class.
I could go for a nice cute short girl who likes to hang out and go to movies and eat chinese food.

College is so much better than high school class wise. I love how 90% of classes dont matter, you just have to show up. Like you just have to write shit, and then study a shitload before tests. So much better than what I did in highschool. I guess going to a big university is a good fit for me in that aspect.
So I've been playing a lot of footbag. I played about 9 hours over the past 3 days. I'm pretty sore, and it feels good. I think I go pretty hard for all the time I play, which is good. I hit a nice 17 fearless today with some weirder tricks (through flip fog, flip pixie dod, bedwetter). Trying to break the patterns I normally throw. Hit one cool combo: nemisis>pdx. torquescrew.
Bevier has been playing well too. I sucked today so I kinda was not paying attention to his game, but he had some busts that were sick. There was one run where 30 contacts in he freezed an osis, and then totally rewound into a mobius, it looked really good. osis>mobius isnt too hard, but its kinda rare.
I'm making a few bags recently, but I'm not too happy with them. I did make a really good one that I'm sending out to Zac Miley because he gave me a bag a while back. Right now I'm making 2 bags at the same time with different gather levels to see which one I want to stick with. Kind of a weird experiment.
