favourite drills to improve certain tricks

Post by AUTsider »

Hey everybody !

A friend of mine and I are going on an around the world trip on the 4th of December. We will be on the run for one year and so we would like to ask the modified community for some advice. We both are basically tiltless players and would like to know your favourite drills witch helped you to improve certain tricks a lot. The technical merit could go up to 4 add drills, because one year is long and we both very motivated. Every advice is welcome from easy basic drills (mirage > legover rpt) up to crazy rubberman or what ever.

i know i can do any drills if i hit them, but i am looking for drills, witch help you to improve certain moves a lot.

For example: drifter > same side butterfly rpt really helped me to improve my drifter! (but drifter > whirl rpt was crap, because i just started making sloopy drifters.)

P.S.: i like your avatar blurryben! i use the "tigerbalsam" (german name) too after hard shredsessions =)

I do three types of drills.

1. Drilling one particular move.

A good example is "the whirr" drill as i think of it - infinity>whirl>whirr repeat. Whirl>whirr is not a hard link for me and in fact in many ways it makes the whirl easier because it's a slow version of the next move. To give an example more on the level - say you want to drill illusion - then the drill would be something like legover>illusion repeat - legover is half a step to illusion and should be an easy move for you - hence every part of the drill helps your illusions. I guess pdx whirl>whirr rpt would be a better example of this kind of drilling, and indeed I use that drill sometimes, but at the moment it's a bit difficult for me (which is definitely a reflection on my flipside pdx whirl) so I tend to use the easier drill more. These kinds of drills are really crucial to be all really easy moves + the move you want to drill.

2. Drilling a link.

To stick with whirr examples - a link I've been working on a lot is whirr>stepping sets. The drill I use for this - which is maybe a little surprising is whirr>stepping clipper>infinity repeat. Whirr>ripwalk rep makes more sense - and indeed I do that drill a bit too - but again, the focus is on drilling the link - not the secondary link. I find that ripwalk is easy to hit badly while stepping clipper isn't and I only want to focus on hitting whirr>stepping - while ripwalk>whirr isn't really any harder than butterfly>stepping clipper - the infinity adds in a genuine break, which really puts the focus on the link I want to drill. To give this an example on the level, say we're drilling illusions again and linking them to pixie sets - I'd go with something like illusion>smear>legover repeat. Note that you could change the smear to a pixie legover and cut a move out, but for the same reason I extend my stepping out of whirr drill, it may be better to add the extra move. Up to you of course.

3. Drilling a component.

I'm afraid there are no whirr examples for this, because I can only hit clip set whirr. Instead I'll give a couple of examples. My stepping drill is ripwalk>stepping clipper>sidewalk repeat - when you're drillng a component, I think if possible every move should involve the component. I've put these drills in this order because I think the third type of drill shows the most amount of control of that component. However another example is my torque "drill" which goes torque>infinity>torque>infinity>pdx torque>infinity>infinity>pdx torque>infinity>infinity>blur>pixie torque>infinity>infinity>pixie torque>infinity>infinity>blurry torque>infinity>infinity>blurry torque>run
As you can see, that's not a "drill" in technical footbag terminology, but it's still obviously a drill. The aim is to basically hit all the standard types of the move in the most basic run possible. I could easily, and often do, add more moves to the drill - pixie ss torque, mobius, barroque, gravedigger etc. but basically it doesn't matter. This isn't a repeat drill, usually I drop before I run out of component moves - but that's also because I end up trying moves that are ultimately beyond me (like irish cream). Some easier examples would be illusion>fairy repeat or illusion>legover>illusion>legover>fairy>legover>legover>fairy>legover>legover>ss butterfly>illusion>ss butterfly>illusion>op butterfly>pdx illusion>op butterfly>pdx illusion etc.

Finally I wanted to say that all the moves I drill are moves that I can hit as a once off at least 50% of the time (ie. hit at least once in 2 attempts) and indeed all the drills I've mentioned as primary examples are ones that I am also confident I can hit once without much effort. I don't drill moves or components that I'm not some what comfortable with. If I come across a move that I want to get better at but I can't hit well (or a new move). I'll tend to just hit that move to hand catch or toe stall or whatever over and over until I do feel comfortable with the single move on its own. I think it doesn't help your game that much to work on drills you don't think you could hit. Of course it depends on how well you think you know your game too. Hope that helps.

Drills:

ss clipper x n > ducking clipper x n > rpt
diving clipper x n > op clipper x n > rpt
spinning clip x n > op clip x n > rpt
ss clip x n > gyro clip x n > rpt
whirl x n > op clip x n > rpt
ss clip x n > drifter x n > rpt

op butterfly > op butterfly > op butterfly > osis > osis > ss butterfly > pdx mirage > rpt x n

mirage x n > ss mirage x n > rpt > ss legover x n > legover x n > rpt > illusion x n > ss illusion x n > rpt > ss pickup x n > pickup x n > rpt

where n is an odd integer (n=1,3,5...)
