*BUMP*
Back when I was 15 or 16 (~8 years ago), I injured both my right and left hips at different times while skateboarding. The right was more severe than the left, I was in pain for a good 2 days after hitting it on the coping of a mini-bowl.
Both still will have a dull pain from time to time after a long day's shred. No biggie.
But lately my left (the one I really didn't injure that hard, just fell on it hard a few times, years ago). Has started to hurt when I do out to in dexes with it. It's not that painful, but it definitely inhibits shred.
Aside from implementing RICE on this bad boy, any other tips to nip a hip problem like this in the bud? Hopefully lessons can be learned from Erik's unfortunate condition. I've read through this thread and most of it involved physical therapy or acupuncture which I'd like to think I'm not at that point where I'd need it, it just started hurting this week. Thoughts?
Hip STILL messed up -- please help! (can't play footbag!!!)

I'm also bumping this topic because it looks like Erik Chan is shredding again? I thought his injuries were to the point that he couldn't ever play again. That's awesome that he's playing again, are the injuries fully healed?
It was my hip flexor. I did the hip flexor stretching exercises on Hood's House and another website for a few weeks before during and after sessions. The hip pain went away completely!sampotter wrote:What part of your hip hurts? Is it the hip flexor?

I read all Erik's posts and some others.
People might laugh at my advice. I don't care.
Give up on the doctors.
DISEASE=DIS EASE
Don't put your body at dis ease. Everything should be easy.
Something your doing or not doing is creating major problems and ruining your life. I could tell by how long and frustrated sounding your first post was. I'm sorry I didn't write this sooner.
I started falling apart at age 24. Now I'm all injured up all over.
If you really want your body to change you must change over 50% of your normal day.
Sleep on a different surface. Maybe in another room. Quiet and Dark. Change the temperature. Maybe it wasn't cold or hot enough for that kind of healing.
That's 9 hours.
Change your wake up. Rising to your feet first thing in the morning should be executed differently every day until you find the perfect way.
Change the inside of your body first. Then the outside.
I mean Eat Healthier. Eat some Meat like a chicken Hip Flexor. It's got everything your missing. Take or stop taking multivitamins.
Sauna/Steam room. Try to melt your body into a lump of flesh. Like really drink all evening and morning and then go Sauna for like 2 15 minute sessions or 25 minutes if you can go that long. Then gently go swimming immediately after. The cold will reshape your muscles to your bones perfectly after being melted right off the bone.
Then a few days after the Sauna and eating healthy you should start wearing different socks, shoes, underpants, jewelry, hats, even change your hairstyle if you're willing.
Listen to different music too. It changes your brainwaves. Changing your mind is important too. There is no way your body is just gunna heal all the way on its own at this point. It's been too long. You're right to give up on all the stretches. That's not really extreme enough to make an extreme change in your bodies healing habbits.
You can date the same chich though. That's okay. Good even.
Honestly I really believe that if you do all these major changes to your body all at the same time(day or 3) That your body will understand that somethings gotta give and there will be definate changes to the way you feel each day.
So,to recap.
Sleep differently in every way you can imagine.
Eat way healthier and eat some meat that comes on a bone. Switch your multivitamin habbit.
Sauna swim combo.
Change your mind with a new look inside and out of your body.
Live the difference.
Best a luck man, best a luck.
Oh, consider a full body messuse/chiropractitioner. Tell her(female chiro's are much better) your in good shape and just looking for a general tune up since you are a professional athlete. Should cost about $80 or less.

Even if time off has helped, not knowing exactly what the problem is would make playing again risky. I have had various hip problems, hip flexors as well as at the top of my hamstrings, both of which lead to lower back problems - which kept me out for around six months. That was six months before I could even think about starting a rehab programme. I found little long-term help from doctors or physios, but did find a chiro who offered short term pain relief through massage (not manipulation) which helped loosen up the muscles surrounding the injury, which had all locked up to compensate for my hips.
If you do find that after a time you think you might be able to start shredding again, I would look seriously at maintaning a regime designed to maintain a balance. Footbag works your quads way harder than your hamstrings and as a result it can cause an imbalence that will result in hip and knee (patella) problems. Find low impact exercises that will keep a balance - swimming is a good idea.
