I tried to search for this but couldnt find a clear explanation. I was just wondering why most people make the hexagons long side longer than the pentagon's side? Is it so that the hexagons over lap?
Also when sewing do you put a stitch between the hexagons short sides, or just leave them open for bleed holes if so does filler leak out of these much?

bleed holes are a good thing but some people stitch them up. the reason i make my hexes longer than my pents is because thats where you connect the hexes to the corner of a pent.

If you find a good ratio between the long and short hex side, you can make a good bleedhole(s) for your bag. The qualities I find in a good bleed hole:
1. Unconstrictive. Too tight of a bleed hole would only make the bag stiffer and you can't properly fit a straw through if you want to change the filler a little.
2. Firm. Again, not tight and not small. However, if it is too loose, filler will leak. A brief respite would be to make your long side longer to compensate on adding flange for added security. The additional flange would be able to block filler from leaking out, and you'll get a softer bag. However, too much flange can make for a distorted feel and scatter of the filler for playability's sake, so I would be careful.
And to add, relevant to this topic, is the ratio for the pent and hex size, to make for a good quality bag.
3. Good pent/hex size ratio. Large pents are good and add more pockets for the fill to go to, but too small of a hex size can stiffen up the bag in time. It won't break-in properly, including some other factors such as gather and filler in a way. However, too small of a pent and large hexes would make a bag look... weird and unappealing. It's good to think that visually, in terms of a good ratio, is to have a large enough pent to compensate for a moderate sized hex, aware of the short side length that makes the bleed hole. Imo, my approximation for a good pent/hex ratio is 1:.07, but the general consensus is 1:.05. Great examples you should look into are Johnny Suderman, Tom Mosher, Pengpeng Du, Jeremy Mirken, Fletcher Funk, and Footfighters.
