considering the amount of players who are gonna be at this event, considering it is growing in popularity among our small North american comunity.

and considering this event has so much public exposure in such a great venue with a hotel attacthed

then how come the IFPA or the people who run footbag.org get more involved.

It just seems like a great opportunity to really promote the sport.

I dont see why this event should be taken any less seirously than euros, us open or even worlds.

I think its great that were all pushing hard to make this as much fun for us and for all you awesome people traveling to have a good time, its great that were making the best of it for our own enjoyment, i just think this event and venue has far more footbag possibility beyond us having 15 different circles to shred in

Exactly what I was going to say.

Also, if you really wanted to, you could get it IFPA Sanctioned and then hold a competition with amyn different events.

Maybe the event already sanctioned, I'm not sure how to check that myself, but it wold go a long way if you had a big competitive side as well as the fun side that is already there.

why dont you send a proposal letter to ifpa and such to ask for more promotions on their end? i mean, obviously the ifpa has to be involved to some extent in order for there to have to be a fee to compete.

and isnt steve goldberg actually coming to this event? im not sure what footbag.org could do more, because they are the ones who have the event listing...

maybe modified could have a banner for this event, much like the bots, baby vasek, and modified banners in the top left.

those are suggestions but i dont think that any promotion is really needed. everyone is doing so well by speading it through word of mouth... and the cic people are planning this really well. obviously previous nyj's have been the shit or there wouldnt be so many out-of-towners attending.

i totally give props for all the people who are setting this up. and thanks too. my christmas & new year would suck without yall. (thats right, i said yall)

(edit again: the comps are public arent they? because this is all going on at the same time as the festival. isnt some of the time is supposed to be spent demonstrating to the public?)

about the public show ... the whole tourney is public because it is part of a whole festival and it runs at the same time every other sport runs at.

I'm researching this right now but from what I've found it seems the event organizers have to apply for IFPA sanctioning. It's not just based on size and rep or whatever the case may be.

No entry/comp fee was decided by the organizers, not the IFPA. CIC's main focus in helping this event was to help draw in more players. We thought that dropping the fee would encourage more participants and to an extent that seemed to work last year, we had more competitors in 2005 than in any previous NYJ.

Quite frankly there are a few of us in the club that would drop competition all together and make it a big jam. The focus would be just hanging out and having fun with all the footbaggers but we also understand that there are people that enjoy comps too.

You're not... and he does. We're not against IFPA sanctioning, we just hadn't thought about it. Although it's something to consider next year.

BTW, I've been to all but one of the NYJ's and I'm very happy to have seen it grow slowly and steadily from a very local event to what it bacame last year. This is only the third major event I've help run so I'm still very new to the responsibilities I've taken. But me and the guys are trying to bring you the best event that we can and still balance out the rest of our lives (specially during the holidays- I've got nieces to spoil!).

I could care less if there is a proffesional competition, it would be cool to watch and it would help draw a more international type players to chicago and thats all good, but a bit off of my point.

my main point is

If the people at footbag.org have a goal of growing the sport i think they have been missing a womderfull opportunity to make NYJ a yearly visit and vehicle of spreading the word on freestyle footbag

I think anybody who has attended this event can safely assume its the best opporunity to first hand show/spread the sport in north america.

Actually, we are the people at footbag.org. All of us - footbaggers. There's no real separate entity of people (well there kind of is), but basically it's up to us to make this public. It's up to us to seek help from those who have done it b4.

You have a good point, Shawn. This is a great opportunity to promote the sport to the public. The location itself is great for public promotion, though I'm sure more could be done. Scott mentioned press releases.

The thing is, even though this is the 7th New Year's... it's only the 2nd CIC New Year's Jam. So in that respect, we're just starting and focusing on other aspects of the event now.

We'll talk, Shawn. Get you involved, cuz I know you want to help, and I'm sure you got some good ideas.

I remember tons of out of towners from waayy back in nyj days(2001-2003). People from Pennsylvania, NY, Minnesota, California, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Idaho, and more. Its great that our events are becoming international with the repeat of Canada's appearance though.

I am 99.9% sure that I will be coming...I just won't be able to shred much due to the ankle injury from over summer (been 6 months already and still hasn't healed completely...bummer eh?).
