Midi controllers... ? (Help me electromusic guys!)

So I got a big honkin' midi controller keyboard this Christmas. Keystation Pro 88. 47 pounds and bus powered? Yeesh! It has a bunch of knobs and sliders and shit. The action is totally playable, if a little heavy for my tastes. It even gives off a nice blue glow. Trouble is I don't really know what to do with it. I don't know anything about digital music or electronic composing, but I'd like to. Where do I start?

I figure the first order of business once I get myself sorted is to recreate a bunch of 80s synth-pop. You know, living the dream.

I learned to create electronic music back several years ago by using a program that could compose MIDI files using a score and could also download MIDI files. It queried a couple different popular MIDI file search engines and then allowed you to download the results. I learned by downloading a bunch of different music in MIDI format, listening to it over and over again and studying how it was composed. I think I learned a fair bit. It gave me a nice foundation for when I started to dink around with actual samples as opposed to MIDI software.

i have all the software you need. but is your computer fast enough to handle virtual synthesizers?
