So I'm going to make a couple of flyer designs in Photoshop (well, try to anyways. I'm not too good with photoshop). They will promote footbag and I plan on posting them around town. It's going to have a brief explanation of footbag so people familiar with hacky sack can relate. Have a couple of website links to footbag.org and modified, as well as contact info for myself so people can get in touch with me and hook up. Was thinking of making one of those free message boards too so people can come check it out.
Anyways... I'm going to make the flyer 800x533 size I'm thinking, and wondering if anyone knows any good, enticing pictures for the background of the flyer. I've been looking around and don't see any footbag websites that have clean enough pictures to use and show to "newbs".
Any suggestions on images to use or any suggestions in general, feel free to let me know.
Also any suggestions for a few videos to link to and show newcomers the ins and outs, beginner level of play and also what your game can develop into, would also be appreciated.
Hey chris, have you been shredding this whole time (the time you havent really been around modified) ? If not, how long have you been taking a break from footbag. Great that you're back

Hey Henry! Nice to talk to you again bro and see you're still around. Unfortunately no I took a very long (about a year and a half) break from footbag. I'm terrible now, but getting back into it and going back to the basics. I know what mistakes I made first time around that severely limited my shred, and am going to pay close attention to my past flaws.
Here is something I whipped up in about 20 minutes. Very basic and nothing special. Let me know what you think, I would love criticism on anything from layout, effect, information/wording, etc.
i wouldnt put "footbag" in with shadows, and the font used is kinda weak. it could work better without the quotation marks. the font style youve chosen is called an egyptian font, when i would use one that is either more modern, or transitional (a mix between egyptian and transitional).
it needs to be easily read, and since its on a light back ground, why dont you make all the text black, without that weird outline thing. orange against blue isnt good for text, esp since theyre complementary colors and will only fight when placed beside eachother.
i would maybe use a picture that has motion in it, instead of the low to the ground clipper. like a ducking ps whirl or something. im sure theres clean shots of that. the stage has a good angle, and it could work for sure.
are you going to be printing in black and white or in color? that makes a big difference in colors used. also, make sure if its color, to use the cmyk photoshop setting, so the colors come out as close to those on the screen.
Alright here is a different variation. Man, I suck with photoshop... or just design in general . I can always think up a new design (which is what I'll be doing, think I'm going to scrap this design idea), so what I need your opinion on is the text itself.
-The text should be cleaned up to be more grammatically correct. I could do this for you if you are interested.
-I would further brighten the picture of Vasek, he's still kinda hidden in shadow. You really want to bring people's eyes to the player.
- The photo you are using looks cool to people who already know what footbag is. For those that don't, it's a bit strange because Vasek has unnatural ankle crank, and the bag isn't immediately visible. For people who don't know what footbag is, I think photos that have the bag in the air are more impressive.
This is an awesome idea! I kind of prefered the other font though. It was easier to read and didn't look so clustered. As for photo's, that one is kick ass but like Ken said, one of the bag in the air would look better. Did you read the "Features at Guelph" article about Jorden Moir? It had a really sick picture of him doing a whirl . I can send it to you if you don't have it.
hmmm... that font still isnt the best idea, but its a improvement from the plain old textbook text. hand rendered typefaces arent always the easiest for everyone to read. younger people could probably read it fine, but their parents probably couldnt.
i still think black letters on the sky background would benefit it best.
also, at the bottom, where it says web-site, you should soft return it, so it textwraps before or after that word. that way theres no awkward dash and you dont pause while reading.
the "leading" is making it difficult to read. leading is the space between the horizontal lines of type. increase that, and a more attractive pic would do fine.
I agree, that sort of font looks to me like it might be aimed at a younger crowd, but with footbag flyers you could be handing flyers out to most age groups. i'd suggest a cleaner looking alphabet maybe
Yea, I think the Vasek pic has more space potential for text. Vasek within the shadow adds to the mysteriousness, though the jorden pic is a pretty good alternate.
Thanks a lot for the suggestions and everything guys, truly do appreciate it.
I'm planning on making a couple of different flyers, and I should have mentioned that this first one is actually aimed towards the younger kids. Probably going to use this one around rec centers that a lot of kids are around. Also planning on making a more suitable one for general public for posting around town. Should I scrap the youth version and just use one general one?
Anyways I've taken all of your suggestions into consideration and will make some heavy revisions once I hear if you guys think I should use two versions of the flyer or just one general one.
Again I really appreciate the ideas and everything guys. As you can see I'm no photoshop master or even have a real eye for design haha.
edit - Ken I would love it if you wanted to clean up the text with grammar and such. Thanks!!
So I tried to take those suggestions into consideration and I created the ugliest thing I've ever seen.
So discouraged right now
@ Brinard - What style of font do you suggest? As of right now I only have the defaults that came with CS2. Also the soft return idea was great, thanks!
@ Ken - I DID manage to brighten the picture to a clearer level. I was thinking originally that the darkness would be mysterious and look cool. I thought about it and the darkness would look better on a computer screen in a dark room that I'm sitting in rather than outside posted around town. Also brining attention to the player is obviously key.
I'm going to give it another shot tomorrow when it isn't 4:21am (damn I just missed one of my two favorites times in the day... well, used to be anyways *sniff*). I have a feeling I may be putting up job offers for someone to design a couple of flyers soon though, haha.
your flyer is far from ugly! I think it is great that you are going to promote footbag But to pick up what Ken said you should really use a picture wich shows the footbag in the air. But don't be discouraged and keep working!
Took me forever to find any good footbag pics but i finally found a couple for ya. They both in 533x800 res. As you can see theres not a ton of room for text, but w/ a little inovation it can be done. Give me a few hours and I'll take a stab at it myself - I'm rather handy w/ photoshop.
Edit: Just realized you wanted 800x533, not the other way around. I guess you could just rotate them sideways so you could still print two fliers on one sheet of paper.
Hows this look Chris? I pretty much just tweaked your text some and added it to the 'big air' pic. It could use some spiffing up, but what do you think about the new pic - improvement or not?
Those are great! I think I was trying to hard to make it look fancy and too professional. I should just stick to basics.
Thanks for the pictures, I'll try making something out of those.
And for the effort I'll probably end up printing out a few of yours too and passing them around. I plan on printing a few designs to keep it fresh around town ya know? Haha.
Haven't had much time to do much of anything the last few days, hopefully tonight when I get home from work I can crank out a design. Then again, I had a shred with Sergey and Cole tomorrow so I kind of want to be rested. We'll see
Thanks again, and to everyones suggestions/encouragement.
