I am soooooo close to hitting whirls and need some finishing advice. I kind of hit them a couple times already if you count the bag getting stuck in your under the knee area and then stalling it... :?

Whatever happened to that proposed "faq" archive on the forum? This question has been asked a million times. It would be so helpful to have an organized forum for questions just like this one. In that forum there should be a topic on how to use the search tool >o______o<

Sorry. I am aware that it was probably asked, and I try not to repeat things cuz I know it is annoying, but I can't remember ever seeing anything about it. If I knew, I wouldn't have bothered. I'll go search for it.

I know its common with whirls for people to have knee aches, which normally means that they are not performing the whirls in a way their bodies can handle.
If i were you id take a short break from them and in a week or so, when you eel no pain, approach them slowly, trying to hit them in a bunch of different manners, until you find the style that works for YOUR body. Sam Colclough says its best anatomically/physiologically for your knee to point your toes straight with your dexing leg (following a line rather than foot bending perpendicular to the leg), and I do trust him.

Play around with the positioning for the whirl. Thats my advice. Another person's way might fuck up your knee

If it's hitting your dexing leg, you might be trying to crest the bag while it's still going up. You should just be coming over the bag as it begins to descend. Also, lean over the bag (body tilted to that side), so that you have better control over your movements. And practice, I guess.

I've still never hit a whirl, but on the second last session before my injury Derrick Ogden gave me some good advice. I was setting the bag too far in front of me. The whole move is done farther back than I thought, I had a couple of close attempts right after he told/showed me. Play around with where you're setting the bag.

Plant your setting foot more quickly?
Do the dex more back than in front of your body?

Sounds like you have a clipper problem. Practise consecutive clippers on the same side with the approximate setting height of a whirl. Also make sure you aren't trying to advance too quickly, drill your basics.

yeah, don't try to go too fast, but I think you just need to set the bag more behind you so your clipper foot can stay in the same spot.

If that is happening I would wait on whirls for a little while. You may find yourself landing on your clipper foot if you are trying to learn it too soon. You really need to drill the idea of your clipper into your body for a while, so that when you land that is a very natural thing for your foot to do. Whirls are actually a pretty advanced move for a 3 add, so don't be suprised if they take a while to learn.

Read ericsonj's post again Very Happy
or
do what i luv to hate doing :
practice clippers on both sides
until your feet fall off, because
when the stall is yours, you can
put all concentration on dexing
and timing .

i think try more of a full circle dex aswell as planting quickly, i had this problem. It sounds like your doing a big arch with your dexing leg, resulting in it going behind you. Im not good with whirls, but that may help

Sorry this is like a late ask for tips, i can do whirls from clipper set alright, but toe whirls seem to be much harder. I read above and it helped me a bit, but i seem to have the wrong technique, i tend to hit the footbag with my calf part, and its just wrong. Any tips would be great Very Happy

toe whirls are very similar to pdx whirls I guess.

Turn ( about 90°) your body before the dex and then do a whirl.

Alex, think of a toe whirl as a regular pickup bailed to clipper. Just think of the same kind of dexing technique that you use for pickups, and apply them to whirls. Keep in mind: when I started out learning them, as soon as my mind went, "Okay, trying a whirl now," I'd often get flustered and change my technique unintentionally. It's annoying, and here's how you can avoid it:

A good way to practice is to do pickup > pickup > pickup > toe whirl. That way, you've got the previous tricks (and dexes thereof) as a reference point for the whirl. If you jump straight into doing the whirl without the reference point, your body will just freak out, and you'll drop.

Pickup > Pickup > Pickup > Toe Whirl. Try it.

Sooner or later your body will get used to what a whirl feels like, then you can ditch the pickups and just hit Toe Whirl all by itself. Smile

That's when it feels good. Wink

Practicing Whirl without bag, RLs on feet, just schooling the motion helped me A LOT... I can say, that this is the way I learnt Toe Whirl and Pdx Whirl... And because of that I do my Whirls in the best way for my body, and knees. And I can practice & practice them without any pain...

Well, I've only recently started getting my pdx whirls down. It took me quite some time after I learned toe whirls before I could hit them at all.

If you have the motion down, yeah, kinda turn towards the bag a bit. But think the EXACT same way as before, only this time practice FAR pickups.

Far pickup > clipper > far pickup > clipper > far pickup > clipper > pdx whirl.

The reference point thing works really well for me...I use it for a lot of tricks that are *just* at that point where I can't quite just do them right away.

Something like...Pixie ss Double Switch. I'll go Magellan > Magellan > Magellan > Pixie ss Double Switch. Seems to work.

*shrug*

Thats some really good advice man, thanks

Yeah i tried far pickups and tried to get the solid first, did them bsos

My motion is definitely better now and i footed pdx whirl after doing
pick up>pickup>clipper>far pickup >clip >far pickup >clip>pdx whirl(drop)

Ill keep schooling the motion thanks

Kevin, that toe whirl advice was really good! I hadn't thought of it that way. It's not a move in my repetoire, but with that drill I imagine it will be soon. Thanks buddy!

I guess it's ok to bring this old one up.
I have one question, just to get sure. When doing the whirl dex motion do you guys stretch your foot so that your calf and your foot is in one line?
Like this : ----- oppsite to this: ---/ Smile
I try to dex the bag as straight as possible. And I think it looks better. Any comments?

I been obsessed with whirls and if i start sucking at it, its always for one reason, Im rushing the delay.

For me this trick is so much easier if you do these 2 things:

1. Really spot and feel the delay. almost as if your gonna hit pause at the heart of the delay.

2. Always set the same height. I go just a little above my knees as to not hyper extend my knee and risk injury. knock on wood

So far in my year of playing this has been hands down the hardest trick on my flipside. Im finally starting to hit it but dam it feels so uncomfortable and awkward.

THANKS FOR THE TOE WHIRL TIPS!!!!! im going outside right now to try them out.

1. Really spot and feel the delay. almost as if your gonna hit pause at the heart of the delay.
This is great advice for a lot of tricks I think. When I learned drifter I used this technique a lot. Digging into your delays for some reason gives you a little extra time to dex.

Watch a video of brian parson

I kicked with him in september and when he does a strong side stepping set his pause is insane. i swear you can almost count 2 whole seconds and then after that pause his stepping is so fast and strong and it adds a very explosive style to his game . Its really cool to see.

I just hit paradox whirl twice i didnt find it to be super dificult, really didnt seem any harder than toe whirl and its an extra add.

I hope i can add this to my tricks to hit constitently soon cause it would be cool to have some 4 adds to hit besides dimwalk.

I've been getting pretty close hitting this move on my strong side but no dice yet.

So many times now I've hit the dex what feels like perfectly cleanly, but my clipper foot misses the bag. I feel like I almost can't get my clipper foot back under the bag in time. I just read through all these old posts and no one else seems to have that problem. So, any tips? Setting it low really helped me get dex done, but maybe I am setting it TOO low? Is that possible? Li'l help pls.

whirl

Post by Guest_1 »

Hey dude, if you're still trying whirl

A) Don't do it! It ruins your hips and knees!

B) If you don't care like everyone else [myself included] do it like this!

don't set it high. That'll just fuck up your knee. I had the best explanation via shawn boyle that will be less articulately reiterated to you now.

You are over extending the knee [muscle/tendon?] to do whirl. So don't slam down hard on it

Never, ever let your foot go higher than your knee. You will not be walking afterwards.

Move your clipper foot far behind you. I don't know how to describe this, but move the clipper away from the support leg.

Set it low, dex, plant.

Then stall. If you're not catching it, remember to really move your clipper behind you and turn your shoulders extra over the bag.

Hope this helps, Joshua

you might listen to him, or me:

you might try the whirl motion around an inanimate object to speed up your dex, assuming it is a dex that does not hurt your knee. you will need to be creative in which inanimate object you choose so as not to obstruct your dexing path.

In general, when you say that you never get your clipper foot back under the bag in time, I have 3 tips:
1) you can set the bag the same height but try to start the dexterity earlier (as the bag is still rising or just as the bag is on its way up)
2) set higher and try to start the dexterity earlier, leaving more time at the end of the move for the delay
3) school your dexing speed so you're doing essentially downtime whirls; this is the hardest path IO, but a necessary one as you continue to improve.

Try to think of the dex and stall like this: replace the dexing leg with the stalling foot. As one leg competes the dex, the other foot is repositioned where the bag is falling, with no hesitation.

I have just begun to hit this wonderful move, and it is all thanks to Jorden Moirs article on Flipsider, basically, play smarter not harder...

First, look at your set. Is it high enough? Is it to high? Play around with it, start setting it really high (only a few times, as said above it does mess up your knees) and then set it really low. If you get closer to hitting it, just refine on that area of set..

Dex.. leg hitting the bag? NOT even dexing it? In your case, to slow of a dex?
Well, for this it is all about footwork and speed (by footwork, I mean the times your feet touch the ground). One thing, is once you've set, throw your clipper foot down as fast as you can, without injuring. If that gets you closer, or more time to catch it, good. Another factor, is the motion of your dex. Play around with less knee, and more thigh/hip, or less thigh/hip, and more knee. I found in the beginning, I used only my knee, which allowed me to go really fast, but have a terrible plant and thus not catch the bag. So then I started stretching my thigh out to the side more, and viola, I could plant.

Catch in general
Footwork. Think about how much time it is taking you to get your foot off the ground. Play around with how long it is actually there. I even tried it symposium a few times, (and it worked..I could hit symp before normal..) and then you can not have to rely on the stability your plant is, just just worry about the jumping with the dexing leg in the first place.

Yeah....Hope that made some sense...

I figured out what I was doing wrong with whirls... I set them way too high. I tried it just a smidge lower and perfecto. This trick has taken me so damn long though ill admit i never really practiced it enough.

So after a year and a half, I still can't hit this move.

Here are some attempts on camera. I know I'm doing these totally wrong but I don't know how to fix it. Other than keeping the set low (which I've read 1000 times now), ADVICE PLEASE and I'd rather it be from people who know what they're talking about and can actually explain stuff. Thanks.

Ben, your problem clearly is that you start the dex way too late. Doing a normal Whirl, think it as an uptime dex. You must be done with the dex when the bag is at its peak.

Your clipper stall and set are preventing you from doing a comfortable whirl. You have to change your clipper before you can move on.

The dex is late because your current clipper doesn't let you dex any sooner. Your set is powered by your clipper leg, which pins your support leg against the ground. Dexing feels awkward because your front-facing clipper position is forcing you to dex against your body, instead of with it.

You need to learn to do your plant and stall in unison so power from your support leg goes into your set. You're facing the bag too much on clipper. Turn your head, shoulders and hips away and look under and sorta upside down to see the bag. That'll bring the bag closer to your body and center of gravity and make your torso and legs feel more solid and comfortable. You should feel your quads and abs tighten more as you sink. Hope that helps get you started.
