Magazine for Footbag (Now: Online)

Basically, everything that we talk about online, here on modified. There are a couple differences though: In the magazine, we would also have room for advertisements. Anything from a certain stitcher's bags, to a certain kind of multi vitamin, to (eventually) addida's new shoes/shorts. It would surely lead to more sponsorships and it would be good promotion for footbag.

The magazine WILL now be hosted online. To start out, anyway... Costs are climbing out of the woodwork.

BUT!!

The creation of a book that will serve as a printed snapshot of footbag in 2007 has begun. This book will be sold on the website that hosts the online magazine upon its creation. (Read posts on and past pg 3 for more info)

I'd buy it! As for a title... hmm, I say let's go crazy and name it "Footbag". I like this idea though. We could do it Freedom Footbags style for trick breakdowns. Have a frame by frame thing as well as written tips. I don't know if there would be a problem with doing that though seeing as how Freedom did it first.

Personally, I would buy one. I also think its a great idea. In the stiching section are you going to show pictures along with text to help explain ideas?

Maybe every time you print one you can have a "betcha cant hit this" section like guitar world. They always have someone tab out something crazy no one can play and challenge people to try it. Maybe a sick string or trick?

Anyway, good luck, and keep updating this thread please, I think a footbag magazine would rock. Nice price too, I applaud the lack of greed lol.

BTW I disagree with what yippy said cause, if there isn't enough to say about footbag, then what the hell are we doing on modified

I also support an online edition. I think you could profile a different player every month, you could have individual clubs send in shots of their shred spots and the whole crew hanging out after shred, maybe a little video clip, and a good story about something club related.

I bet you could talk to one of the already well established footbag web sites about posting your magazine.

What do you think of an online version? And maybe you can sell something through the magazine... a logo shirt, footbags, logo socks! ooo, those could be cool.

One of the most important things about having a footbag magazine is that we would finally have something available outside of the internet. ...Look at all the books on hockey, lacrosse, football (lol.. I accidentally wrote footbag), and all that stuff. Having something regular, archival, tangible and street-distributable/displayable (are those real words?) would be a milestone for the sport.

I got the idea while I was looking through the magazine section at Indigo books with my dad in the sports section. As far as titles go, it's not like the magazines for hockey are called "Hockey" and Shred is a term that's used all over... snowboarding, guitar, footbag, ninja turtles, paper-disposal, etc. It's nice and straight forward, but it's not exactly exclusive. Nemesis Magazine sounds pretty sick though! I was even thinking something to do with Modified, because the magazine would contain most of the same stuff and Modified is kind of the source of it (indirectly)... I dunno. It was an idea...

Definitely a cool idea about including a "Dare you to hit this" section, Anthony. And there would for sure be pics included to help with stitching, modding, and even trick tips.

( I just thought of the name Blurriest for the magazine... I know lots of people can hit it, but that's a wicked name for a trick and it would be a sorta funny title. )

WFA tried this a long time ago. I think it was called "kickers quarterly" or something. I remember seeing a big picture of Eric Wulff on one of the covers. I don't think they made very many because no one wanted them. But now there are a lot more players. I'd buy it. Especially if every issue had a center fold of a hot shredita.

It would be awesome to have one of these magazines to show to people that ask questions. Blurriest is a good title. I cant hit them yet though

Matt, I like your thinking ha, the marketing idea. I also like the profile idea. Some short interviews might be cool.

Is vaska or some other pro gonna be on the cover doing some sick ass trick? Or the name of the magazine, like pullin off a blurriest or whatever.

Well, I think it would be better to do what most magazines do. Change the cover picture every issue. Not only would that be a simply way of telling issues apart, but it would allow for a sweet range of pictures. Maybe we could have a contest in the magazine where people sumbit their pictures and people could email/post which one they like best for next issues cover.
Profile idea is awesome too! It could be like on Flipsider, prefered bag, prefered surface, prefered shred music, experience, hardest tricks, goals, everything. 8 D TOO MANY POSSIBILITIES!!

But yes, WFA had a magaizne called Kicker's Quarterly (nice memory Jim ) I remember reading a couple articles off of their online samples a year ago.

The idea of a footbag magazine comes up about twice a year. There used to be a footbag magazine in the mid 1990s called Kicker's Quarterly, or Footbag World or something like that.

One of the reasons a footbagmagazine made more sense 10 years ago, was that it was that the internet wasn't nearly as cheap and common as it is now. Printing a magazine is more expensive and takes more time than distributing content online. Back then the best way to pass along footbag info to a newb would be lending them a magazine. Today, just saying "footbag.org" or "modified.in" does the job, because you know everybody has internet access.

Another problem with a print magazine, as opposed to online content, is that footbag doesn't photograph well. Footbag is one of those sports that really needs video to convey what is going on. Unless a print magazine includes a CD with vids on it, it won't have the same impact as a website with new videos updated frequently.

It is also difficult to get good writers to generate content for you on a consistent basis.

All that said, good luck in your endeavor. It looks like a big challenge, but I hope it works out for you.

thanks for that input, Ken. I see what you're saying about how simple it is these days to just refference modified or f.org... it's still just the archival nature of a magazine and the fact that you can sit on the couch/in bed and read about footbag rather than sit at your computer desk and read about it. There is also the advantage that somebody might be told to go to said website and then forget, or never intend to actually do it, or just not be interested enough to search hardcore once they get to said website... with a magazine you could be like "there it is" and all they have to do is look. I realize that this doesn't apply to everything they'll need to know, and I definately hear what your saying about the necessity of vids, but it's not like you can't do both.

I'm going to discourage talk about a Sports Illustrated style hot-shredita pic...

I love this idea. It is kind of funny how ppl are talking like magazines are completely outdated. Magazines are way more credible than internet forums where anyone can post random crap. It is more professional and looks better. Plus like he said you wouldn't have to be stuck to a computer if u wanted to check things out. I would definatly buy this if u made it. And any of you up and coming stitchers could stick your ad's in there to get yourself known and what not. If you needed it I could possibly write something, but I don't know how good I'd be at it.

I'd be happy to write an article, but I'm not sure what I'd write about yet, or indeed if it is any good. If there is any kind of female centrefold then I certainly would not my name mentioned anywhere in the magazine, or would be willing to contribute to it.

Do you have a time frame for this? Email me a deadline.

edit: I'm unsure if it will be successful, but making an effort is the best way to find out, rather than talking ourselves out of it.

At first I was thinking that an online edition would be much better, easier, and further reaching. Then I thought, there's already a lot on the internet, and a magazine would be extremely cool. Like Jeremy said, we'll never know till we try.

I'd actually be interested in being a consistent contributor. I'm not 100% sure I will be able to, but I have confidence in myself There are many, many things that could be written about, photographed... artwork...

I can do player profiles if you want. I'm not sure how we'd choose player's to profile but I can come up with a list of questions and preferences and such to ask about. PM Me with some info if you want to do a player profile section and we can work on what to put down and such. This will be fun I think.
