Request to remove the baby vasek banner...

Post by jon »

I wanted to start this thread to see if anyone felt the same way I did about the baby vasek banner.

I surf modified in the library from time to time and whenever that banner comes up I feel that if someone were to walk by and look at my monitor they would think I was looking at some kiddy porn site.

I was talking to Johnny about it today and he said, "Some guy made a call on me at school one day, because of the banner. He was like "what the shit kinda forum is that? Hacky sack, and naked babies? Dude you're fucked."

If anyone else feels the same way as me perhaps that particular banner could be removed.

Thoughts and opinions?

I just refreshed like 10 times trying to find it so I could re-edit it with a censorship bar and i couldn't even find it.

But this page only has two views... so idk.

But yea, take it down. That and like, all of them. We should make new better looking banners anyway.

I agree that it's time for better looking banners. A lot of them aren't very funny, and even if they were at one point, they're pretty played by now.

Back in the day when newbs expressed interest in footbag, I'd point them to modified. But when the banners changed to these new ones, I kinda stopped mentioning modified.

Moved to General Footbag, since the thread deals with the appearance of the footbag forums.

Agreed. I also like to use the pictures as a way to link back to the main page, and the BOTS one kind of messes that up. Just a thought.

Agreed. I've been also wondering what Vasek might say if he sees his naked picture as the banner of a popular Internet forum.

And I also think that the banners that have something else than shredding figure and text "modified.in" on them can go.

Mike Hansen is the only one on the forum who can put them up or take them down. I'll try to get in touch with him but his schedule is a little rough these weeks. Your request is not being ignored, it'll be taken care of as soon as possible.

If we ask for more banners we'll give a specific size or range they need to be because I know a few "modified pimps" had problems with that.

We should keep the blue one that has Jorden (I think) doing what looks like a symp. mirage and it says modified.in in the corner. That one is nicely done.

I also like the one that says hacksack.out modified.in.

I made 90% of the current banners right now. The reason being, is I thought we were going to go back to .ca within a few weeks, so all of them were just meant to be jokes really. I think it's really funny that the one that says 'modified.ca hopefully soon' is still up since there's no way in hell we're getting that domain back, and it's been like 8 months. The Online Comps banner is also about 3 months too old, it's almost time for the next comp and it still says entries due in November or whatever.

Maybe an extra admin can handle this stuff. I know how to change banners in phpbb. I'm not saying I'm the one to do it, but it's really not hard. We should stop relying on Mike for every change we need to make. He can just as easily show someone how to overwrite the picture files in the file path.

I have no problems with the vasek banner, it's one of my favorite in fact.

Most of my friends think that footbag is a waste of time anyways, so vasek banner is something that doesn't bother me really.

If my friends/parents/whoever see the banner I will just explain them who vasek is and why he deserves to be on the banner. If they don't get it, they can just fuck off.

Also, I agree that some banners don't make sense at all, but others are funny.

I hate the paranoid culture that we live in today.

If the banners bother people, sure take them down. But I urge everybody to consider if their feelings on this are rational, or if you're really reacting to the pressures of society, especially from the media.

Huh? Pressures from society? How does a baby picture (even if the picture is of vasek) in any way relate to Footbag? Furthermore most people don't need the media to tell them that a picture of a naked baby on a Footbag forum just doesn't make sense. This is an issue more related to a banner being pointless and not funny then a bunch of paranoid forum readers.

I am interested in why you feel the people objecting to a picture of a naked baby has to do with societal pressure. Also explain why you feel this banner should stay because it seems you object to people requesting it be removed.

jon, don't you think it would be pretty boring to have a forum strictly related to footbag stuff? I mean, modified.in or any other internet forum does have subforums related various things other that the main subject (life, sex, rasism, etc). Funny pictures could be one of them...

Lets be clear on a couple of things. I said:

I don't know how you can interpret that any differently than what it says. If I thought they should stay up, I would say so. I honestly don't care about if they stay or go. I find none of them humorous apart from the India one (and I've always thought it would be funnier if it said "prid" but probably nobody gets that joke). I find none of them offensive either. I barely look at them.

You claim in your second post that;
But if that were the case, why didn't you say so in the first post? In fact you didn't bring up the idea of "making sense" at all in your first post. The only reason you put forward for getting rid of this particular banner was;
I surf modified in the library from time to time and whenever that banner comes up I feel that if someone were to walk by and look at my monitor they would think I was looking at some kiddy porn site.
Was it wrong of me to assume that your opposition to the banner was for the very reason you stated for getting rid of it? That seems like a pretty safe assumption to me.

I also did not say that your opposition was because of paranoia. I believe that there is definitely a level of paranoia about paedophilia in our culture today. I don't know you very well, I don't know how you think or what your background is, so I don't know what your the motivation behind your fear of having people think you're looking at baby porn is. It could be entirely rational. At no point did I say that this was a decision being made because of paranoia. What I said is that I feel there is a problem with paranoia in our culture and that I would like people to question it. As I said before, I really don't care about what happens to the banners, it just struck me, reading this topic, and not just your post, but some of the other posts, that people could be acting because of that paranoia. I'm not saying that they do, I don't know. I do know that some people are paranoid about paedophilia and that people in this topic were opposing an image because they were afraid of people thinking they were paedophiles. It seems rational to consider that their might (not is) a relationship between those two facts, and I simply wanted to voice my concern, not with modified, but with our culture, and ask people to question that.
