Hey, if the shin splints get too bad, TAKE TIME OFF. Seriously, this really was instrumental in me fixing my shins. Take a week or two off, then when you come back only shred every other day for a while. It's very annoying, but it'll help in the long run.

If you shred every day, and you have certain 'handicaps' if you will (My biggest handicap was overdeveloped calves+landing on the backs of my feet), you're more susceptible to shin injury.

When you shred, or do any type of muscle building, your muscle first tears, then scars. It takes basically a day to scar up and heal. I'm sure you're aware of this. Well, if you shred every day, your muscle just keeps tearing, and never has a chance to build back up. This is extremely bad for an already weak muscle like the shin.

So, I'm only able to shred every other day. Yeah it sucks, but I'm now shredding without pain. And eventually my shins will be strong enough to go back to shredding every day because enough scar tissue will be built around that area's muscle system to cushion landings. Gotta think long-term bro.

Peace.

Thanks dude. I've basically shredded about 10 days straight. I'm like hardcore addicted. I have been progressing so much!! Bottom line it just feels so good to footbag. At the end of a session when I am tired and worn out all I think about is how I can't wait to get my energy back so I can do it again :)

So, I will be taking today and tomorrow off. On Saturday I'll see how I feel.

Sunday 2/4 0.75 hours
Total hours played in 2007: 26.5 hours
Total hours played in Feb 2007: 3.75 hours

Played in front of target. NM to report. Did some spinning, hit some DLOs. Some preacher guy asked me a bunch of questions and then tried to convince me that I needed to go back and study the bible. At least he laughed when I told him I was an atheist, he was cool about it.

Monday 2/5 1 hour
Total hours played in 2007: 27.5 hours
Total hours played in Feb 2007: 4.75 hours

Played at the gym. Honestly don't remember too much. Was admired by lesbians doing suicide sprints.

Tuesday 2/6 1 hour
Total hours played in 2007: 28.5 hours
Total hours played in Feb 2007: 5.75 hours

Played at the gym. I hit a bunch of DLOs. Spinning was on. Worked on flip pixie. Managed to hit flip PLOs and foot a couple flip smears. FOOTED ASSASSIN TWICE :) That move is just a matter of time. Very close to flip DLO.

Wednesday 2/7 2 hours
Total hours played in 2007: 30.5 hours
Total hours played in Feb 2007: 7.75 hours

Tennis courts session.
Highlights:
 I hit FLIP DLO for the first time :) Plus came close a bunch of other times. The better it gets, the more I attempt it. This trick should be solid soon, but if I shred less often, maybe not as soon.
 A 30+ contact tiltless runs with lots of 3s. I lost count. I was just shredding and the run just kept going. I had a DLO in there, a couple pixie tricks, butter>pdx mirage BSOS, some infinities, pickups, illusions... lots a beesauce axion. I was able to move to basic shiz like legover > mirage > rpt to catch my breath between bigger tricks. I decided to get fancy with a spinning clipper and ended up just footing it and dropping :x oh well. Fun run!
 Spinning PDX mirage. Once. Footed several other times each side. With a little more practice this move should be cake.
 Notable footings: Assassin, spinning clip > DLO, spinning osis > DLO, smog :!:

I'm really liking DLOs a lot now. Now that they're reliable, like 70% success rate these days, they feel soooo good to hit.

Anyway, I'm going to take it slower for a while to let my shins heal. It sucks because I've been on this huge streak, playing like 10 days in a row. It used to be hard to have motivation to play every day, so now it just kinda sucks that I have to restrain myself from playing when I have tons of motivation. Oh well, it's for the best. I'm sure I'll thank Chris some time in the future for convincing me to slow down.

Oh yeah and since a new page got created, I felt the need to repost my new video along with the bonus video.

Congrats man! :P I don't know what to comment on first! I don't remember what Assassin is and I'm too lazy to look it up now but just the fact that it's new is worthy of an *Internet High Five!*. Awesome that you're getting all the Flipside stuff down now too. Definitely take a break though man. I know what you mean witht the motivation though. I wouldn't fully take a break... Just whenever you've got a few minutes, try out some stuff here or there but don't do full sessions. That's what I do and seems to work. Keeps my motivation from spilling out at least. ; ) Keep up the crazy good work!

Dude, I read your blog title and I'm wondering why anyone would want to battle with shin splints. This won't 'achieve' anything. Athletes don't try to conquer their nagging injuries -- they REST!!...or fix their training structure and technique.

Saw one of your vids. Unfortunately I can see why these problems are developing.

Some advice:

- play on the balls of your feet as MUCH as possible.
- time your clipper so when the support foot lands, the bag is simultaneously stalled on the foot
- arch your back and turn the hips completely away from the bag during clippers
- pivot your support foot on the ground whenever possible. try to avoid any dexing motion that relies solely on leg strength. using hips to dex is the better method!
- keep entire body totally relaxed as much as possible
- experiment with 1000 different variations of the same trick. find the one that's most efficient and use it. don't be satisfied with pain!

Treat your body well and it'll treat you well.

If shin splints still happen then consider a different brand of shoe.

I've always had shin splints and I don't even want to know how good I would have been if I had got over it 2 years ago. Currently the most important thing for me is to get rid off shin splints, once and for all. It takes a lot of time but I'm sure it's worthwhile.

If I were you I'd print Jorden's advices and hang them above my bed. :)

Good luck!

So, yeah, slowing things down. I'll admit it, it hasn't been easy. I was able to abstain on Thursday and Friday, but I had a full session on Saturday and casually shredded a little bit on Sunday.

Saturday 2/10 3.0 hours
Total hours played in 2007: 30.5 hours
Total hours played in Feb 2007: 7.75 hours

Played with John. It was kinda cold. I was taking it easy. Worked a lot on clipper form and clippers over all, and non-BOP 3's.

 First 3 levels of clip > op clip drill where the number of clippers you do goes up by one after each repeat, sealed with first clipper of level 4. i.e.: left clip > right clip > left clip x 2 > right clip x 2 > left clip x3 > right clip x 3 > left clip (seal)
 ducking clip > spinning clip
 spinning clip > DLO
 Infinity x 10 :D
 Infinity > Ripwalk > PDX Mirage > Butter > PDX Mirage > Dimwalk > footed DLO :x

No luck on flip DLO. FOOTED whale tail :P :)

Sunday 2/11 30 minutes
Total hours played in 2007: 28.0 hours
Total hours played in Feb 2007: 8.25 hours

Nothing really, just worked on clippers and spinning for a little bit.

Shins do not hurt today. Taking today and Tuesday off anyways. Let those bad boys heal all the way up.

Online comps are coming up. I think I'd rather work on hitting a really cool difficult 4-add than a cliche 5-add for sick 1. I have several sick 3's thought of at the moment, I need to hit them on all on camera and decide which one I like the most.

It's good you're taking some time off buddy. I know it's hard but it makes your next shred that much sweeter as well. :D That Clipper level thing is a good idea! I might use that tonight if you don't mind! Great drill man. I'm going to tackle 2 or 3 of your challeneges tonight (Finally heh...)! Keep it up!

Been taking it pretty easy this week. Shins are healing up nicely. Game has not suffered :)

Tuesday 2/13 45 minutes
Total hours played in 2007: 28.75 hours
Total hours played in Feb 2007: 9.0 hours

Don't remember too much of this session. I think I just drilled a lot of basics. Ooh! Now I remember last run of the night I hit Spinning Clipper BSOS :) :P

Thursday 2/13 1 hour
Total hours played in 2007: 29.75 hours
Total hours played in Feb 2007: 10.0 hours

Fun stuff. Pretty good solo session.
 Butter > PDX Mirage > rpt 14 contax!
 Iron Clad DLO prep drill 18 contax!
 Flip DLO first try! Hit it twice! (3 times ever now :))
 Lots of strong DLOs :D
 Clipper > Pickup > Mirage > Legover > Illusion > RPT
 PDX Mir > Dimwalk > DLO :)

I think I'm kinesthetically more aware of what constitutes a good set for DLO. Pretty much as soon as I set my brain knows whether I can DLO out of the set or not. I love DLOs!

Also, for the longest time flip butterly was the weakest link in my butter > pdx mir drill. Now it's flip pdx mirage. I'm dexing it fine, I'm just rushing the delay at the end and dropping a lot. Also, when I hit it sketchy I can't set into flip butterfly well. I know it's a reeeeeal basic, but I need to skool flip pdx mirage.

Want to shred tonight but I'll abstain. Let da shins heal.

You have to be the Right Stuff

 Reflections and reactions must be as fast a machine (cyborg status helps here)
 If something happens you know just what to do
 Feet must move without thinking and hands like like lightning too
 What can freak the average man must not affect your heart
 Even if all your footbags are ripped and torn apart
 Don't feel fear or panic
 Nothing can bring you can down
Then you'll be an aerospaceage warrior able to fly sideways through sound.

OK today basically three things happened today
1) Had a good footbag session with James, Cody and John :) :P
2) Went shopping got some primo insoles and 6 new CDs :) :D
3) Got sick and threw up a bunch of times

Saturday 2/13 3.5 hours
Total hours played in 2007: 33.25 hours
Total hours played in Feb 2007: 13.5 hours

I threw up just as the session was starting. I felt a little queasy but I was so stoked to shred I didn't care.
The main thing is that I hit flip DLO a ton of times in this session :) I had hit it only 3 times ever previously, I probably hit it at least 6 or 7 times today :) Soooo close to BSOS. I would hit it on flip first and then go for strong side but get too excited, set badly and drop :(

Basically after that, picked up some shiz, insoles, CDs... came home, ralphed on my front yard. I've felt sick all night. I ate some food and threw that up later

Why does this have to happen on the weekends? Why can't I get sick during the work week :x :x

Benjamin Benulis my man what is up?
All I have to say is that you should really pay attention to what Jorden said I especially agree with him about what he sais about your timing going into clippers. I think if you put that tiny little hop into your set to time it so that the bag stalls as you land, you will be in good shape. When you set from toe to clipper kinda raise up on your toes for the so called "hop", and that will help set the bag rather than relying on pulling straight up with the knee as done in conventional toe stalling. I hope this helps, I know you can do anything you set your mind to.

Health status: Still kinda sick apparently? No shin splints though 8)

Recent Cyborg Modifications:
 New SUPERFEET insoles.
 Armband for iPod :P

I definitely looked like a shred cyborg last night with a wire going from my arm to my head :P  :P 8)

Monday 2/19 1.25 hours
Total hours played in 2007: 34.5 hours
Total hours played in Feb 2007: 14.75 hours

DLO BSOS SON! WITHIN THE FIRST 20 MINUTES :D :P sealed with like 3 or 4 more contacts. Also double BSOSed osis in one run :) Had to stop a little early. I guess I was still a little sick because on the way out of the gym I threw up a little

 Butter > PDX mirage > rpt 12 contax :)
 ICDLOPD 24 contax
 Clip > Pick > Mir > Leg > Ill > rpt > run

Played more on my toes. No pain :) Not even today the day after :o

I think I'm gonna take the night off from shred, do some cardio at gym and then study Rubik's cubes solutions. I've been fooling around with them lately and I can now get all of one color on a given side, basically solve 1/3 of it. There's all these algorithms, it's extremely mathematical, I'm intrigued. I need to clean the dust off the gears on the mathematical part of my brain. I used to be so good, but since I left college I use it so much less, it's gotten rusty. I miss being lightning quick at math type stuff.

Online comps are a week away! I need to film! Yikes! I'm thinking a really solid, well executed, bothsided genuine guiltless sick 3 (with maybe 1 or 2 4-add's) and a difficult/unusual 4-add for a sick 1. I've got a bunch of possible good sick 1's but really haven't thought of links for a sick 3.

I have always loved this game. Can't wait for MFJ!! :P Just two months away :x :x :)

Major major props on DLO BSOS man!! And the Osis' as well! Sounds like you had an excellent session!
Glads to hear those shin splints aren't bothering you either. Playing on the toes helps so much. How are those insoles? I might look into snagging some. They look comfortable. And also how does the iPod armband work for you, do you find that the headphones jerk out of your ears or does it affect your shred at all? I've been looking into a way to use my iPod during shred.
Hit that Sick 3 though man. I found that filming a couple and choosing the best one worked pretty well. I finally got the one I wanted on film. Good luck!!!

Oh, and after 3 1/2 weeks, I finally hit Flip Whirl last night on camera, and then again today. Hell yes.
