Making the highest grade on tests? Getting almost all the countries, cities, bodies of water correct for a country you dont live in? You sound like you're doing great with class work... you should totally be proud of yourself! Maybe your schedule makes you feel lazy because in your free time you relax. That's not a bad thing in my eyes, you're at least doing your homework, having time to play guitar, and have time to party a little. Kudos, Dave!

The girl will come along right when you need her.

Hey thanks Holly - yeah I'm doing well I just have a lot of chill time I guess. I don't need girls right now anyways I just get sick sometimes of seeing most of my friends with girls and I am sans one. But I don't really even miss them that much - I had a lot of negative experiences with girlfriends. A lot of work.

It's going alright man. I've been really busy. Played footbag for the first time a few days ago. Really just hacking I guess; my ankle is still pretty painful if I try to stretch it horizontally like for clippers. Used Holly's bag. It's really nice - I think it'll become one of my favorites. Still waiting on a bag from Matt Cross - I think he's been really busy lately. I definitely understand that! As far as coming back to Raleigh, I'll be there for Spring Break. I forgot the dates right now but I think it's March 10-17. So I'll at least be there for one week in March... do you want to get together?

My life is getting really complex. So is my thought process. The things that I once thought were important, like girls and being accepted, etc.... really mean very little to me now. I've become selfish in a way, but I don't think it's really selfish - I feel like it's more self-AWARE. Learning a bit about myself everyday - trying to see things in a constantly evolving light. Trying new experiences. I'm ALWAYS thirsty for knowledge. I find myself being extremely frustrated with people who think differently than me. But at the same time I feel more patient with them. I think of people as pawns sometimes, and I need to figure out the right things to say rather than blurting out as much information as I know all at once. It's as if I have a large reserve of information and if I give it to people gradually it makes me appear more patient and knowledgable. They're also more willing to listen to me because I give them information gradually rather than all at once. It's a very important thing I'm learning. I feel like I've been observing people for my entire life to learn this task. I'm constantly trying to stop indulging as much as I can - I indulge (as others do) far too much.

For example, I just had a somewhat heated conversation with two of my roommates and one of their ex-girlfriends about health care in America. I am very passionate about the way I view issues - there is almost nothing that I simply DON'T care about - sometimes I just know that I have to take the time to understand what it is. For example, I don't know much about cars but I know one day I will know very much about them. Right now I am learning about myself - I think that is much more important. But back to the health care discussion. I think that we should follow some of the other countries in the world who supply their citizens with free health care (okay, it's not "free" - I understand that and always have). I feel like the well being of society is important to society. However, one of my roommates, who is VERY against government-supported health care, said something today that made me think about how the health care system would affect economy. It's interesting, sometimes I think there are two types of people - people who care about people, and people who care about money. I tend to sit on the side of the former. But when I was thinking about it, caring about money actually could fuel the economy more effectively than caring about people. It's an interesting thought - I think I'll stay on my side but it's definitely something worth looking into.

I thought I was depressed for a long time. Now I think I have been very disillusioned. And I still think I am - life is definitely a learning process. I'm starting to let go of one of my indulgences. It is VERY difficult for me - the caring about people close to me, whether or not they care about me. For some reason this is very hard for me, but I'm starting to be able to care about myself more than what some girl thinks about me. I'm starting to live my life the way I want to and think I should. I've always thought I was doing that, but now I'm starting to realize that it's as if before I was looking at the world from a see-through green sheet. Now the green is fading away gradually, but the sheet is still there. I think that when the sheet is finally gone I will understand.

I hope everyone on modified is well - I have been very busy and will continue to be very busy. I have no footbag updates. I haven't even responded to anyone about the footbag magazine - I have a responsibility to do that and I intend to but my list of things to do is very long and I think I should tend to the list that pertains to things I need to do for myself to be happy. This list includes:

Learning
Exercise
Eating healthier
Understanding
Less indulging
DOING MORE

It is all very hard. Like I said, I hope everyone here is well.

Wow, some in-depth introspecting going on I see. I'm glad things are opening up to and for you now. In my honest opnion, being more self-aware is a great thing, though sometimes it can be frustrating, and having the desire to expand that self-awareness is too rare of a thing. That and your obvious pursuit of knowledge will only benefit you in the long run. Everyone is guilty of worrying what other care to some degree in one way or another and I honestly think it's something that will always be avooidable, even if it's just a tiny sliver of a feeling. But always put your thoughts about you before what other people think.
Ok, now that my little rant is done(sorry if any of that is a bit different than how you meant it heh), things are going well for me. As far as us meeting up during that time, I'll have to check and see when my Spring Break is as I will be in Florida for it's entirety. But from the dates I think you'll be here the week before mine so I think we can definitely meet up and shred. Just send me a pm or post in my blog about a week beforehand so I can plan. :D

Possibly downtown. That usually works... good exposure, good spot. If you have any indoor spots, that would probably work even better.

School's winding down before Spring Break. But it doesn't really feel like that. New responsibilities show themselves everyday. After tomorrow I'm just chilling for a week, relaxing, reading, playing footbag, and maybe composing some music. I hope to see some old friends, make some new ones, and try some new things.

Just finished "The Eagle's Gift" by Carlos Castaneda. It was really, really good. I'm going to buy the next book in the series within the next few days. I'm also reading Robert Anton Wilson's "The Illuminatus! Trilogy." I've attempted to read it twice already, but that was when I was in high school. I understand the concepts a lot better now. It's still really trippy though. I recommend it to anyone with a patience and a love for the occult.

Perhaps I'll pick up Philip K. Dick's "Man in the High Castle" next week. It's been sitting on my shelf.

Sigh.

I read that book in high school when I was really interested in some things about Mary Magdeline. I'm not really -interested- in the occult, but reading new things about stuff I'd never hear about is always what I'm interested in. You should read "The Gospel of Mary Magdeline". Not much about the Illuminatus but it's still some interesting stuff. Another book about her, "The Woman with the Alabastar Jar"... and a random book "The Haunting" by Chuck Palahniuk if you haven't already picked that one up yet. There is a short story inside called "Guts"... you can Google search it and read that one alone, it's bad ass.

I'll be making a trip to South Carolina in May (my twin graduates from bootcamp)... I know that's not north, but it's closer than TN. Maybe if I don't have any Maymester classes, Brian and I can make a trip to Raliegh for a couple days... it's a possibility.

Any specific places downtown? I don't get out there very often. We could even possibly shred at Triangle Town Center next to the food court. Tons of people in the food court all the time. Just a suggestion. Might be good to just play around with some ideas and choose from the best. I'm up for anything though honestly. I may have a friend come along. He's just getting started and is only learning the basic kicks but if you don't mind it might be a nice learning experience for him. :D

And Holly. Give me a shout too if you guys get anywhere near Raleigh! :P

Holly- Yeah I'm about 1/2way through with The Illuminatus! Trilogy now. Cool books... I have The Haunting on my to-get list, which is ever-growing and very long! A suggestion to you is to read Carlos Castaneda's Teachings of Don Juan. Sweet that you'll be in SC... if you're going to come to Raleigh be sure to message me a week or so in advance because it's a few towns over from where I live so I'll plan accordingly.

Alan- I'll see you today man. Looking forward to it.

Man. I don't know exactly how this happened but I got fat! A year ago I was -50 lbs. I guess I got lazy and started eating way too much food. Actually I would describe it more as binge eating. I'm way out of shape but I've been playing racquetball, basketball, and shredding a bit. I think I mostly need to change my diet - Sheetz almost everynight not only drains money, but it adds tons of freaking fat. It's cool though, I know I can lose it - I was in the same predicament 1 1/2 years ago. I've started my 150 sit ups everyday routine this week and I'm sure if I do it for a month I'll lose 10-20 lbs. It's gotten to the point where it's embarassing.

It's spring break for me. Well, I have three days left of spring break. Rather than party and be unproductive I decided I needed a break from ... partying and being unproductive. Not that I'm unproductive at school, but I do party too much. That's why I gained so much damn weight. Anyways. I got a lot done. I read a LOT... and I'm going to read some more this morning. I actually practiced trombone a few times, which was the first time I'd practiced in four months - since I quit Jazz Ensemble A (A Band). I have a performance in a week or two for my music fraternity. Dave Brubeck's Blue Rondo a la Turk. I stayed away from the phone - didn't call anyone in town and just stuck to my studies. I figured that way I could get stuff done and focus on eating better. So far it's been working - I think I've lost a few pounds. Although I won't really know till I get back to Greenville because my parents scale sucks.

March Madness is on... I'm glad Duke lost (even though it royally screwed up my bracket) because I've always been a diehard UNC fan. Their performance last night was pitiful too though - sure, they pretty much shut E. Kentucky out, but they let them get pretty close a few times. Overall, I would've liked to see more from an offensive end.

I'm actually really glad to be getting back to Greenville tonight (I think I'm leaving tonight, right after shredding with Alan, but I'm not 100% sure). I haven't really missed my friends too much. I miss looking at hordes of whores though - my campus is filled with beauties to the brim! Moreso than any other campus in NC, that is. I can vouch for that too. Too bad a lot of them are bitches. I've been having a lot of probs in the girl department lately. I realized last night it's just because I've never had any balls to really ask anybody out. Seems like the only times I have, I've been rejected. So I guess I stopped trying. I might be trying when I get back to school, but I need to keep my head in the books too. I have probs balancing.

What a long, meaningless post!

Bah, far from meaningless buddy.
It was awesome meeting you and getting to shred with you on Friday man. I'm looking forward to the next time, maybe we can drag Aric over as well. Just give me a shout next time you're in the area, you have my number. :D

Don't worry about the weight man, it'll come off in time. Just keep up what you are doing with the sit-ups and shredding(as much as your ankle and time allow) and you'll be in shape in no time.

As far as girls go, when it comes to working up the courage to ask one out I've found the best thing to do is just go for it. I was always nervous about asking them out but I found out the more that I did it, no matter the results, the easier it became. That and if there's some that you like in particular, it's best to do it before someone else does, because you'll be slapping yourself later for not being more timely. I think the biggest thing that helps with the actual outcome though is just being yourself and showing confidence. Just keep in mind that there is a fine line between confidence and cockiness.

Hope that helps a bit man. Have a great week!

Alan- it was definitely good meeting and shredding with you man. I'm in the mood to want to do it again in a few weeks, so hopefully the mood stays with me! Sadly, my junior year of ECU is really intensive, and I can't fall behind in my studies, so I can't promise anything. It would be fun to shred with Aric again too.

------

Spring break is over. I spent Friday night smoking hookahs with my roommate and one of my friends and his girlfriend. First we had a pineapple/kiwi/orange hookah, then a butterscotch hookah. They were good. I also got to talk about some interesting things like American Rock and Roll, politics, travelling, etc. I like good conversations. Saturday I did a lot of errands and then hung out with my roommates who got back from Panama City. Sunday I did a lot of schoolwork to prepare for today. I'm not sure why I'm up at 3:40 AM on the first day after Spring Break. I woke up with a headache. I think I have been really stressed out.

I'm now on Book 3 in The Illuminatus! Trilogy, which is no small feat because the trilogy is 804 pages. I'm also halfway through Alleghieri's Purgatorio from The Divine Comedy. I've been trying to read this damn book since September! It is very off and on for me. I'm on book 7 of Castaneda's main 9 books - The Fire Within. There are a total of 12 books but the last 3 are supplemental. I'm just looking to finish the first 9 now, then I will see if I want to come back to them with the supplements. Knowing me, I probably will. I need to read Elie Wiesel's Night again for my Contemporary Europe history class. I read it back in high school - hopefully I'll get a better look at it now that I know a little more. I read Aldous Huxley's Doors of Perception in a small two-hour span, and I'm slated to read his Heaven and Hell at any time. I'm also doing some research on mary jane in Dr. Mitch Earleywine's Understanding Marijuana: A New Look at the Scientific Evidence. It's pretty interesting as well. I'm doing some reading for my history class on Mussolini... I'm reading both Italy After Fascism by Giuseppe Mammarella and Mussolinni's Rome: Rebuilding the Eternal City by Borden W. Painter. I have to write a book review of the latter. And finally, I'm still attempting to tackle Richard Dawkins' The God Delusion. Once I finish Illuminatus! I think I'll return to that. And I picked up a bunch of books over break, including authors such as Robert Anton Wilson, Terry Southern, Arthur C. Clarke, James Gleick, and Carlos Castaneda. So, like I tell people, I've been reading a lot.

I haven't been smoking as many cigars as I used to. I wish I was, actually. I may try to have one or two this week. It's hard to mix everything in. Cigars are one of my passions that take a lot of time. I just got my Winter issue of Smoke. I've been drinking one glass of red wine everyday. In general, I've tried to cut down my drinking. Being drunk with the same people over and over has sort of lost it's charm. I find being sober to be preferable to being drunk. I'm trying to also cut down on smoking the mj, but not much - I'm not really opposed to smoking everyday - I am still mondo productive and it helps me look at the world in a more positive way. There are too many positives and too many negatives. The only thing I want to do is try to smoke less - not quit or anything like that. I'm also trying to limit my caffeine, with success - I didn't really ever drink a lot of caffeine in the first place. As far as cigarettes go, I'm limiting that majorly - before Spring Break I was smoking them a lot more than I'd like to and I didn't drink or smoke anything to alter my state of awareness during Spring Break and I enjoyed the sobriety.

Were you aware of the fact that our government keeps alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine of the Controlled Substances Act list? Were you aware that if they were on the list, they would be Schedule I? Their addictive properties and the fact that they have no medical use (although, red wine does so I'm not sure how that would be listed) would land them there. Caffeine would most likely be Schedule IV or V. It's just something to think about. I think it is really silly and hypocritical for our government and society to place so much blame on a medicine like marijuana. After doing a lot of research on it, I've come to the conclusion that we should all just do what we want in life.

I practiced trombone a few times over the break. I have a performance with two fraternity brothers this Sunday. We'll probably play a blues like Sonny Rollins' Blue Seven. I'm pretty excited, but I'm nervous - I haven't performed in four months. It should go well though.

Well, I guess I should go back to sleep - I've got to get up in three hours!

Ben and I shredded today at the gym. Shredded for about an hour and ran 4 laps. I'm pretty tired. I didn't hit any new moves but I had a nice run with dimwalk and paradox mirage and a bunch of guilts. Ben almost hit legover... and I got him to try mirage and atw too but he couldn't get those down. I guess he footed both legover and mirage though.

Hmm. Oh yeah and I got 10 repeats of Toe>Op Clipper (Rpt. alternating sides) which was my goal. My next goal is for 20 of them. My flip clipper is still weak from my injury and just won't stretch the way I want it to. But it doesn't hurt very much. I think I'm being pretty gentle on it.

Class today was good. The first few days back always seem long. And I have so much work I'm doing. I have to debate tomorrow about corporal punishment. I'm not really excited. I'm not very good at debates. I think I will not look at my opponent because last time I did he owned me. He's one of my friends but he just basically stared me down. I'll be glad when it's over though.

I think I'm on a good and better track.

Word I will try those when I shred this week. Thanks man.

So we got a hookah yesterday. We smoked two rose-flavored bowls and a peach-flavored bowl out of it yesterday. I'm sure we'll smoke one or two more tonight. I found this girl, or rather, I think she found me..? Well, anyways, I don't want to write much about her except to say that she is really fun to hang out with.

I think this may be one of those life-changing moments.

I've lost about 10 pounds in two weeks so far, which is pretty good. The more I go to shred at the gym, the more I will lose because I run as well. But it's hard for me to go to the gym without Ben, my shred pal and frat brother.

My brain is all scrambled this morning, so rather than type anything else I think I will just go peruse the subforums.

That's great to hear man! Both about the girl and the weight loss!
Just keep up what you are doing now and you'll shed another 10 off. And when you are comfortable, step it up a notch. You want to stay a little bit out of your comfort zone so you are getting used to something, because then it doesn't work as well. But make sure not to overdo it as well. :D

I think I'm shredding later today with Ben. That should be pretty good, although I'm still sore from racquetball on Tuesday - but I think once I run a few laps I'll get loose and ready to shred. Gonna do that in about 3 hours.

I'm listening to Mars Volta's "Frances the Mute" CD - it's probably my least favorite right now but I'm starting to like it a lot. Good grooves.

Tonight's the liquor luge that we do almost every Friday, and then tomorrow I'm supposed to go on a trip with a friend, which I'm really looking forward to.
