East Coast Travel Summer07 Florida to Montreal

I am beginning to plan a trip to the east coast in the summer in order to check out some schools there and play footbag while I'm there. Any opinions on when the best time to go would be? (In order to maybe go to a tourney there, or at least avoid times when everyone will be gone to other tourneys.) I will most likely be going at the end of august, because I have to take the GRE in July and make $ from bags at worlds for a plane ticket.

I am currently considering going to:

New York (Stony Brook, Rochester)
Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Pittsburgh)
New Jersey (New Brunswick)
Massachusetts (Boston)
Vermont (Burlington)

This is pretty tentative, but if anyone has a place for me to crash in those cities let me know because lodging expenses will be a large deciding factor in trip length/location. Also if anybody has any opinions/info on those places I'd love to hear it, because I've never been to the east coast. Thanks.

Come to Raleigh!

I don't know really anything about any of the other locations besides Rochester and that's only 1 nights experience. Nice town though. The east coast is awesome though and you should have a lot of fun.

well i don't know whats up with the east coast championships, I no the spike&shred has been moved, there is usually something in montreal canada not far from vermont in july, that leaves funtastic in harrisburgh pa the last weekend of the summer. If you primarily shred nyc has a group that meets a few days a week, also montreal canada has something called the tam tam jam that meets on sundays. locate the various groups from the club list on footbag.org. when your in ny e-mail me at [email protected]. see ya ted f

If ANYone comes to Montreal there will be some serious shred goin' down!
And 3-4 of us play like 5-7 times a week. And yes there will be a Montreal jam early summer

Pittsburgh has three consistant players, maybe more. If you went to Pittsburgh I might try to make it out there if enough shred was promised.

Awesome, thanks guys.. Now that I'm planning this, I'm thinking about trying to make a sidetrip to Montreal before/after the East Coast travel, and going to Funtastik. That will be a whole lot of traveling.

The only dilemma I think I'm going to run into is: How the hell am I going to get around the east coast? I can't rent a car because I'm under 25 (Or if I can it will be really expensive..)

What's the best option there? I can fly into Montreal and just head down the coast, but I think it's cheaper to fly in the country..

Also I was thinking maybe I can hitch a ride to funtastik from another state..

Hmmmmm....Going to really figure out which schools I want to visit and take it from there. This is going to be seriously fun but very expensive and difficult to plan.

If I fly into Montreal and out from PA it will cost me about $500...

I would be happy to show you around philly and let u stay at my place if you came to philly. The city has a ton of really great schools. I am guessing that there is a grad program for almost any field of study in philly. Let me know, I love showing new people around philly

I revised my plans a little bit, tentatively it looks like I'm going to be traveling for one month, after worlds I will be in...

Florida visiting a friend until the 24th or so, then I want to stay in North Carolina for a day (Pyroman can I crash in Raleigh for a night on the 25th or 26th?)

Then to Virginia if anyone can put me up there, otherwise I will be traveling to D.C. for a few days, maybe the 26th or 27th to the 29th, then to New Jersey from the 29th or so, then I can maybe catch a ride to Funtastik from New Jersey? Stay in PA for funtastik then maybe catch a ride to NY ? Then from there to Boston, MA where I have a friend I can stay with for a few days, then to Montreal around sept. 10th and fly home out of Montreal or NY whichever is cheaper...

So, does anyone know the cheapest way to get from FLA>NC>VA>D.C.>NJ?

And can anyone help me with lodging in VA, PA, and NY?

I think after I get those 2 things figured out, I can estimate my total costs and start planning. I also might just wing it and see where I get.

Eastern NA rail pass will cost me $415 for a month..kind of pricey but I can jump around anywhere I want on the east coast including Montreal. I gotta start saving.

Hell yeah man. I may still be at my parents house but since you'll be going to Worlds we can probably get you to meet them so my mother doesn't think you're some kind of psycho rapist or something heh. She's irrational to a point.

Yeah a stop to NC could be cool - I never got to really know you at NYJ06 because of my ankle injury. But as far as transportation goes, try trains! They're fairly inexpensive (at least here, and back when I was in 5th grade - so.... 11 years ago). But they're still worth looking into. Other than that I could suggest bus, but trains are funner - definitely a better experience. If you come to NC, I would say go to Raleigh where Alan is... because Aric McIntosh is there too, and it's just a 1 1/2 hour drive for me. Of course, if you came to Greenville you could crash on my couch but, Raleigh makes more sense.

Made a few changes to my plans and decided that I'm going to buy a National Railpass instead of flying home. I also noticed that I was looking at the railpass for non-us citizens, which was $400 cheaper.

So a railpass will cost me $1,000. The whole trip will cost me about $2,000, including my stay at worlds. Total travel time: 5 Weeks. Here is my destination list as of now.

Leave Orlando August 19th for NC- 13 hour train
stay in NC 20th, 21st, leave 22nd for WV-11 hour train
stay in WV 22nd, 23rd, 24th, leave 25th for DC-10 hour train
stay in DC 26th, 27th, leave 28th for NJ-3 hour train
stay in NJ 28th, 29th, 30th, leave for PA-1 hour train
stay in PA 30th-sep 3rd end of funtastik, leave for MA-8 hour train
stay in MA sep 4th-6th, leave for montreal-16 hour train
stay in MTR sep 8th-11th leave for Idaho sep 12th-2.5 day train
stay in ID sep 14th-16th, 29 hours to LAX
leave 17th for LAX.
Arrive home on sep. 19th, broke and sore from 5 weeks of freestyle.

I've got probable lodging in most if not all of these places now. If I sell 41 bags inbetween now and the end of the trip, I will be able to afford it. I think I'm going to get a job and try to earn more of it before I leave though, in case I don't sell 41 bags on my journey.
