Filler type/size/density

I have been meaning to ask this for a while, but never got around to it. What I was wondering is, does it matter if you have 2 different sized fillers? I think that it would, but if anyone has specific information on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

It seems that if you had two different (or more) sized fillers, they would sort themselves and perhaps affect playability. IE the smaller filler would be at the bottom and the bigger filler would be at the top.

From my experience, bags with almost teh same size filler feels better and sounds better.

Anyone else have thoughts on this?

sound dosent matter.

two dif sizes will sort, but as soon as the bag moves, it gets all mixed up again. i kno this because i have shredded with just a baggie of filler.

if you use size 9, and size 7 shot, it wont make much difference. if you use bbs, and lead, it will make a big difference. you just have to expierement, and see what feels best. to me, its lead and alittle seed. at first, it was more seed than lead. how wrong i was.

your proportions make more difference than the size. (even tho size will make a bag more or less heavy)

idk. filler is kinda personal, and i wouldnt want someone examining my fil to steal it. that what makes a bag act different from everyone elses, more than stitching imo.

anyways, yeah, dif size fillers and dif proportions of them will completely change a bag, for better or worse.

I agree that Lead with small seed beads would be a great mixture.

I prefer steel buckshot and pebble sand from the ocean. Pebble sand is almost perfect and is heavy enough if you pick the rocky sand right near the wavebreak.

I think some sand some pebble sand and lead or steel buckshot would be the perfect mix.

I would like to purchase some steel buckshot but don't know how. If anyone can help. I will pay them a lot.

There's definately a great deal of importance in picking the preferred mix for your style.

I do agree that setability is sacrificed with using sand for filler but by no means is it too light you can add the same weight of sand as you would beads/seeds/shot whatever have you and if you are having problems with it leaking out your bleed holes try using a more grainy sand or add a few beads like ShredOnLawn said.

ShredOnLawn the only place I can think of you getting buckshot would be either from original shotgun shell casings which could prove to be dangerous or try and gun/hunt shop as people do make their own bullets you may be able to find some there.

ShredonLawn, I am not too sure that you should purchase buckshot for filler it is rather large.

Also not included in this pic are the sizes of slugs. Buckshot is for taking down bucks, while the shot is used for fowl usually.

I like the shot(steel or lead or plated or ... ) and glass pellets mix.

its the blend of sand and seed beads. its soft like sand but doesn't flop.

the only problem with seed beads is likely to break and bust up the bag.
the pellet don't seem to break up but I am using the 1mm size well those are nice.

I think that it comes down to what you like the feel of.

I make sandbags, usually out of a 6 or 12 panel template. They're pretty cool imo, definitely shreddable. I have no bias against sand these days, but only that it should be used only in of itself (maybe with shot if you predict leakage, but other than that, nothing else).

edit: As long as you're not using a facile color that is highly supple, seed beads won't pose any problems for a bag's longevity. Facile is strong enough from broken seed beads, and the broken seed beads aren't entirely sharp, so there's not much problems with using them. They won't bust holes in your bag if you take good care of them. Yes, there will be sead beads that will break, but most likely there will be plenty that can keep it's shape sturdy. Seed bead with a thick rim will keep its shape, even with a huge amount of abuse on the bag.
