Twill lavers?

Post by Zac Miley »

Are they easily moddable?

I'm sorry if this has been asked before. :(

I'm talking about the ones like they have on WFA.

I believe you are talking about twill lavers, they come in red and blue and are fuzzy. I shred in a blue and white pair and they do fine. I think that they are a little heavier than mesh Lavers and less sensitive to the bag, I reccomend not buying them or buying them and shaving them. Seriously though, they do a good job for sure, but I think you would be better off with the standard mesh Lavers.

twill lavers look cool, but the outside material is not quite as good as mesh. not as sensitive, prone to rippage... I get complimented on mine all the time, but that's for fashion, not for freestyle.

I have the green and white twill (stripey) I'm kind of noob but they are a good shoe they are made of like a terry cloth so depending on the fabric of your footbag they could stick more or stick less.

The twill ones, yes. I'm sorry. Should have been more specific.

Do they mod exactly like mesh lavers?

I rock two pairs of twill lavers, one for business, one for pleasure. I've never played in any other kind of lavers.

Couldn't really tell you anything about weight differences. For where my game's at, a few grams of shoe weight seems irrelevant.

No complaints about the surface, its very grabby. It can tear - I've got one tear on my left inside, but that was more from hacking than footbagging. And the tear hasn't really gotten bigger.

I've done very little modding, just the lacing & removed the few stitches to create a toe-box. My plan: buy another pair for business, rotate my business pair into my pleasure pair (that sounds dirty), and then mod my current pleasure pair (still sounds dirty) just to see how that works.

I'm betting it will be too flimsy to hold up for long. But the twill layer is very thin & if it does hold up it could be great.

yes, they do mod just like mesh lavers. You can either take the inside fabric out, or you can remove the twill on whatever surface you like. I recommend feeling both fabrics with your fingers and deciding whether you'd like the strength of the inside fabric, or the flex and sensibility of the twill

from what I see in the inside of my twill lavers is a very grabby surface, but I dont think I'm ready to hack no pun intended my shoes apart (right now since they are new and I dont have money for another pair of lavers atm)
I'll post pics by tomorrow

You mean these Lavers? I have green ones (like on the picture) and let me tell you...do NOT listen to people, who say you "don't feel the bag" or that "they rip easily".

They are a BIT heavier, but after a while, you won't notice it anymore. I guess it all comes down to geting used to them.

I'm playing with them regulary for around half a year now and they are just starting to get really good. And they also LOOK cool!

I love them, I'm buying them again 8)

no doubt they are still a nice pair of Lavers, I feel the footbag good enough in them, I havent played with a mesh pair to compare but I assure you they are still an excellent shoe and they can be modded if you want anyways right! They are currently on sale online, they came to 55 Canadian after the exchange, taxes and shipping.

Byrin Wylie rocks out in green twill lavers. He did the standard mesh type mods on them. Go check out his blog to find out all the crazy stuff he's hitting in them.

Dammit, now I'm getting obsessed with the idea of modding my twill lavers... The soles are wearing down pretty quick, so in a way the time is now, before I have to cobble them together with duct tape.

I know I should get my new pair first, just to be safe, because even if I mod them without touching a single stitch of twill they probably won't be long for this world.

Sweet. I'm also trying to figure out the best way to fix the small tear in my left inside. I'm thinking either try to sew it back up or try to patch it... I'll probably just stick some duct tape on there out of laziness.

Small tears in the twill are easily sewn together. It's probably the method that would last the longest. I can't imagine duct tape sticking very well to the twill surface.

http://www.hutchal.clara.net/curtains/sewguide.htm

I suggest the hemming stitch to hold the material together the best.

I remember seeing Brett Campbell playing with the twill lavers last year at Montreal jam. He had modded off the outside twill (like g-units) and left the inside canvas. I know that the canvas is more durable than the twill and most likely less slippery.

Thanks for the link & suggestion. You're right about the tape - I had some duct tape on there for a while but it didn't last long.

My plan right now is to remove the canvas. In part just as an experiment. I think the twill surface is grabby enough, but I want to see how responsive the shoe will be with a super-thin surface. I think it'll rock my socks off.

Well, I modded my twill lavers yesterday. I won't be able to play with them for about a week or two (stupid sprained ankle), so I'll post more about them then.

The tear was actually more of a hole when I looked at it closely, so I got a little creative with my attempt to keep the shoe together. I stitched the twill and the canvas together on the part of the inside that was close to the hole. Then I cut away all the canvas that was on the other side of my stitching (away from the hole). I'll try to get some photos up in case this isn't very clear.

Anyway, the surface is really thin & I'm looking forward to playing with them. And it was fun to finally mod them.
