I just found a spare pound of steel I left out and it had rusted!
How do I remove it?!

Rust is difficult to remove. It's not just a simple cleaning due to the fact that it's a chemical reaction...
The only real accessible/inexpensive way to "remove" rust it to take a wire brush to it. Though seeing as how this is a Footbag forum, you are probably using it for filler, making that a long and very tedious job. In short, there's not a whole lot you can do that wouldn't be very expensive, And I'm not even exactly sure what those expensive ways are.
Next time, buy Galvanised Steel or Stainless if available.

Isn't there an infomercial that has a chemical agent that can deep clean stains and rust from metals (like pots and pans)? Silver Bullet, I think it was called. I think that can be used to remove rust from steel shot.
The only problem I can think of is that it will reduce the density of the shot somewhat significantly, imo. It doesn't hurt to try.

The problem is that the steel isn't stainless or plated so it is basically useless.
If you 'fix' the rust it is just going to happen again.
You need to use the steel for something other than filling footbags unfortunately.
Buy stainless or plated next time and consider this a lesson learned.
