Session Review

Tony, Nathan, Meinard!, Zeke, Kamil and I

Usually we kick by the first exhibition hall, but sometimes there is a convention going on and so we move to the next one. Today all 3 or 4 halls were being used for cheer leading National champs for little kids. So we kicked alllllll the way at the end of the pier.

It was a nice turnout. Great to see everyone, specially Meinard... even the juggler guy from the beach was there. It's march, so winter's almost over. this winter hasn't been so bad in terms of kicking, but summer is always 100 times better.

Zeke's 2 square court was set up, and us others not squaring started freestyling. Didn't get in too much freestyle all in all. i played pretty well. Maybe 1st time inspinning osis. Hit mobius (haven't tried in a while). tried inspinning torque.

Played at least 6 games of 2 square. Won all 'cept one to Zeke (11 to 10).
Kamil and Tony squared really well 2day. I tried mostly those launching shots to the body to try and graze off and fly away (canon) or to just tap/launch forward bag to above opponent's knee where it's hard to kick afterward. i wanted to get sneaky, but that always started giving points to opponents.

Really fun playing squares. Got into it. Lots of saves and nice kicks from all. At one point these cheerleaders were actually cheering "Hack - E - Sack" for us, and I was like, "Gea, I'm pumped up now!" Then did a spinning clipper fake right over the line. It was great.

Hopefully next time, there will be a college cheerleader's championship.

Afterward, Meinard gave us a ride to Kam's car! saving us about an hour on the train. it's been a little while, and I remembered how much I like Kamil. Conversation flows so well. Separately, Nathan is so cool as well. I don't know if wit is an independent thing, but it's born and flourishes in this group, specially with/from Nathan.

Wow... I don't know what to say... I thought the only thing flowing from me was a torrent of bullshit. Thanks, Tom!

Sessions have been so much fun. I've even been pleased with my game the last two weeks, which isn't always the case. Really looking forward to warm weather & working on some of my goals for this season:

Tiltless
Not entirely one-sided (need to make that a clearer goal or I'll just puss out, but I've got a whole list of moves I want to hit flipside by September)
Hit all my 2dex moves every session (terrage, 2atw, smear, pixie legover, dada curve)
Not get sidetracked chasing a move that's way beyond me - feel like I wasted a lot of time on heel-set ducking butterfly when I wasn't even hitting atw consistently
Hit bigger moves mid-string
Just one clean illusion, and I'll be happy for a week. Maybe two days. Goddamned fucking illusion.

Y'all forgot to mention:

-one of the more entertaining rounds of "Would you rather..."
-heated debate of the origins of the Banjo
-thought provoking theological discussion

Sunday. Great weather. Great turnout. Great day. Reile and I show up to the park and hooked with Nathan who was kicking with Taka, an old friend of mine from high school. Josh and Marty (formerly from Lane) arrive to kick a little bit before they went to see Frank Miller's 300. We started a big hack circle just warm up. It was so nice to be playing outside again. I broke off from the circle to set up the 4 square court. Two new guys show up minutes before I spotted Tony walking though the muddy grass towards us. I hack with the new guys, and Taka when Cudo, Meinard and Freddy all arrive separately. Everyone else started playing squares.

Turns out the new guys were friends with Freddy. I found Taka on myspace last year and this was the first time I had kicked with him since high school. He hadn't played in years but didn't play very rusty at all. They hacked for the most part but finally tried 4S. They adapted to the rules very quickly. Voting seems to be the one aspect that new players have a hard time getting used to. I think it may be that they don't want to be voting against people they just met. Other than that I think they had a good time and hope they stick to it. Even more promising is that Taka showed interest in learning some tricks and asked for some links. Gotta send those after this post.

After the session Reile, Nathan and I ate at Boomers . We had not eaten there in some time. The food was good but the LLLOOOONNNGGG conversations after was even better. We talked about pretty much everything going on. I was laughing my ass off quite a bit (as per usual) but Nathan --- this guy was literally in tears at some of the nonsense. We must have been there for at least 2 hours after we had finished eating just hanging out. All in all it was a great way to start off the "season".

If the rest of the sessions for 07 are anything like Sunday's, its going to be a great friggin' year

:D

I had solo sessions yesterday & the day before, plus hacked with some randoms in front of the building I work in. Highlights:

Pixie pickup (name?)
Pixie legover flipside (first time intentionally)
Dada curve flipside
Seven consecutive weakside clippers - new record
19 consecutive strongside clippers, just to give my weakside an inferiority complex
Ducking dragonfly flipside
Ducking toe flipside (set from left toe)
DATW on first try (usually its like 30th try)

Some dude (I'm guessing a student at one of the nearby art schools) took a couple photographs of me standing around thinking what to do next/dropping pdx mirages.

Working on pdx mirage BSOS, fairy clipper, & ducking both sides. Getting closer but not there yet. Also tried mirage to flying toe just for shits & giggles - more shit than giggle really. Tried a couple pixie symp. mirages but not even close, and I'm landing hard on my setting leg at the end of the move, so its probably better to avoid that move for now.

So that makes five sessions in four days, going for six in five if the weather holds out. Pretty happy with my recent progress. It's like I'm kicking myself apart.

Oh yeah: if weather permits & anyone wants to come join me after 5:30 in Grant Park (directly across the street from the building I work in - 300 S. Michigan), that'd be sweet. I'm gonna give Greg a call too, talked to him yesterday & he wanted to play today.

I don't think pixie pickup has a name. Nice progress and happy to hear about all the playing.

If it's warm and not raining tomorrow we're kicking at Lane. If it's warm and raining prolly Northeastern. Cold - nada.

Of the new people that showed; Jamal, Dante, Umfoo-foo, Chaunessy, Joellie, !Russel, Jada, Ursula, Frodo, Ringo, John, George, Paul, Peter, Mary, Jane, Cheech, Chong, I have the most hope in Ronnie. He seemed to determined to learn. I must say though, I'll have my 4-square hooks into him well before you freestylers can corrupt his mind with your Adds and dexes.

Speaking of hooks, I somehow managed to grope Freddy's nether regions while trying to return a footbag. Sorry buddy, hope you're sleeping well.

It was nice to kick outside, definately worth canceling the plans for the Pier.

You guys should really stop making up all of these new players.
You make the scene in Chicago seem soo big.
