where to buy tungsten?

tungsten is different from bismuth, but bismuth is good too. That's what I use.. it's like lead (without toxidity), wheras tungsten is a little more like steel. I've only used tungsten in a couple bags though, and I have to admit that I didn't shred with them much.

I got both from a friend of the familly (he's the one who gets me rib-stitch cord for thread too)... I dunno where he gets all this stuff from though.

Note that I'm going to be making a very important post regarding LEAD as soon as I get the information from Jack Keller. He owns a bead store and has lots of juicy information regarding lead, since some people make lead beads. Unfortunately, it's not going to be good news. I'm actually going to be doing a product recall on Josh Raye bags. Don't worry, we'll be sending them back with the stuff above. I just can't have this on my conscience. Since I kick "toeless" and have been kicking Lead bags a ton lately I figure I've exposed myself to it far more than most people. Nevertheless, keep your eyes here and on my blog for updates coming quite soon. The Penske Pro Model is also coming this week. We're in the final stages of product testing on it. It contains Tungsten that actually runs like 5x what the stuff in the above link runs, so it's not going to be particularly cheap. If you want cheap, get the regular MR.

Some scientific info:
Bismuth, Chemical Symbol "Bi"

It's denser than iron, but less dense than lead. Definitely non-toxic, definitely an option.

Tungsten, Chemical Symbol "W" (as in WTF?)

Density is 19.25g/cm^3 which is significantly more than lead.
There is speculation that Tungsten could be a carcinogen, but there is only correlative data at this point and only one instance of it.

Tungsten 19.25

Iron 7.86 (steel is variable, it's an alloy, there are dozens of varities).

Tungsten seems to be about as good as you can get for a dense, non-toxic (for the most part) metal. Gold, Uranium and Plutonium are denser, but they are out of the question footbag

i agree with ben, i think if bismuth is reasonably priced (and in some sort of a usable form) then it would be a good choice. it dosent have as high of a density as lead, but each individual atom has a higher atomic mass than lead.

That's where I used to get all of my radioactive and pyrotechnical supplies.

Well...most of them. Go to the Chemicals/Metals page. The tungsten is REALLY expensive. Aside from that, grinding it down will be a bitch. It's EXTREMELY hard. And no one molds them into BBs for you, so using Tungsten in footbag would require a lot of work on your part.

You'd have to find some reaction that would oxidize the rods of tungsten and result in a solution and then a redox(?) reaction that would force the tungsten into a powder at the bottom of the resulting solution and filter that out. With all of that said, keep in mind that tungsten is also very resistant to corrosion, so...good luck.

Bismuth is a good choice (nontoxic AND awesome physical properties), but again, no one molds it into BBs.

Uranium is doable, but it's going to cost you a lot. Aside from that, Uranium in the pure metallic form corrodes(rusts) quickly and if it is of a fine grain, then it can readily oxidize if put into a flame or 'hot conditions'.

All in all, these elements are potentially nice novelty footbag fillers, but realistically, they would be either too expensive, too hard, or too dangerous to work with.

Jordan doesn't make his own shoes, but Penske does do several of the steps on his Signature Pro Model... Pretty much everything but the machine stitching, which is done by me. The bag is fat
