Australian Liberal Party: "Why would you say that?"

This news story appeared at around lunchtime at one of my news websites (www.abc.net.au/news). There is an election in Australia this year (or January next year at the latest) and already there is much fierce campaigning. A number of ultimately irrelevent scandals have rocked both major parties and both have been vying for the moral high ground. The headline of this article caught my eye for that reason amongst others; "Abbot's attack on Rudd 'a new low.'" Reading the article, I'm sure you can see just how hilarious the attack is. What's really shocking though, is that Tony Abbot thought that such an attack would do his party good. Let this be a lesson to all future politicians, attacking your opponents story of how his dad died when he was eleven; not a vote winner. At last I'm beginning to feel a slight amount of optimism towards the upcoming election. Kevin Rudd (the opposition) also looks like Tintin!

Abbott's attack on Rudd 'a new low'

Deputy Opposition Leader Julia Gillard says Health Minister Tony Abbott has sunk to a new low by questioning Labor leader Kevin Rudd's account of his father's death.

In an opinion piece in Fairfax newspapers, Mr Abbott wrote that Mr Rudd's version of his father's death and his family's subsequent eviction sounded "too self-serving to be true".

Ms Gillard says voters will recognise that the Health Minister has gone too far in the Government's mudslinging campaign.

"They don't want to hear about Tony Abbott canvassing things that happened to Mr Rudd when he was an 11-year-old boy," she said.

"I don't know what about that Mr Abbott can't get.

"I think every other Australian would understand Mr Rudd's past and how it's burnt into him Labor values."

But Treasurer Peter Costello says Mr Rudd started the personal attacks by questioning the Prime Minister's connection to nuclear power proponents.

"Kevin Rudd decided to attack the Government over Australian Nuclear Energy and look where it landed him - mired in the filth of Brian Burke," Mr Costello said.

While there is reason to be confident, there is still along way to go in this campaign. I'll be most interested in the budget announcement later this year, expect large tax breaks to middle Australia. If it has no effect on the polls, then Howard will be in serious trouble as backbenchers start worring about their jobs and think about switching to Costello at which point it'll all be over. But who knows? There's so much that can happen between now and the election.

With Tony Abbot on the Liberal side, how can they lose.

Yesterday, revelations that John Howard went to a dinner with a pornstar and convicted criminal, in jail now for assault and torture.

Tony Abbott's response;

"I've just had breakfast with 60 drug dealers "

Still the fact that he thinks there is a comparison between Howard meeting with somebody jailed for torture and him having breakfast with 60 professional pharmacists is hilarious.

In other news, I have been convinced to vote Liberal in the next state election after the State government, led by the most evil person in politics, have promised to push through a new pulp mill despite the fact that it now will not follow the correct procedure for developments at all, and according to the companies own assessment, will result in an extra 10 deaths a year due to air pollution. It is so disgusting that we have laws and procedures set in place to make sure new developments are environmentally and socially acceptable and that the government completely agrees to follow the decision of these independent groups, and then allows such a significant and potentially dangerous development to go ahead without having to meet any of the guidelines or follow the correct procedure. At least I can trust the state liberal party more than the state labor party, even if I disagree with their policies. With Lennon in power, I cannot possible vote for such a corrupt government that shows such contempt for due process. Why bother having any processes when the government just ignores them and changes them whenever it can't get what it wants? The Australian Medical Association, oceanographers, biologists, the fishing industry, the wine industry, transport groups, lawyers and even the Commonwealth Bank all believe that this pulp mill is going to have a negative effect on Tasmania and is a bad idea, yet the government is going to make sure it goes ahead, regardless of all the various reasons to oppose it.
