Have you used Footbag as a topic for school?

Post by Splint »

Well have you? Why? Why not? What was it specifically? How did it go?

I always avoided it because I didn't really start footbag as a sport until I was in college. Footbag just doesn't seem like college quality. Then I took a semantics class and had to write a huge paper that I wasn't at all interested in writing so I used footbag, specifically Job's Notation and it's effective use in written discussion of freestyle. That gave me a little motivation to write the paper.

My freshman english class is all about writing on things your passionate about. And I like hack, so I write about it. So far I have written a paper about classifying the different types of freestylers that exist. I got an A- and the proffesor is a REALLY hard grader.

My next assignment is about an event that will change my life. I think worlds 07 will change not my life but footbag in general in the avenues of exposure and promotion. My teacher thinks this is a good topic.

I think in some settings footbag isn't good to write about because you are already alienating your audience because they don't know what it is. I think if your a good writer though your passion can come through and people can get the idea.

I also wrote my college entrance essay on footbag and what it means to me. I think that went over well because I'm sitting in a college dorm room right now.

Later.

All the time. Not as much in essay's but whenever I have a presentation/speech to give, I find a way to incorporate footbag. Though it's kinda cheating in a way because it makes your speech automatically interesting and usually the teacher gives you a good grade no matter how good or bad your actual speech is.

I've even played footbag for someone else's speech. We got to the final round of a speech competition at her college.

My first semester speech class knows more about footbag than some footbaggers.

My teacher wouldn't let me do my final speech over footbag though, so I did it over why our school should not require a speech credit. 8)

I did the thesis project for my degree on the design of the ideal footbag shoe.

Footbag inspires us, it's an easy source of motivation for some types of situations.

I did my senior culminating project to graduate on an after school footbag club I held and how to effectively teach footbag to others. I got a perfect score and actually did a demonstration in front of some other classes. I was super nervous but ended up only dropping my "freestyle" run on a good 20+ tiltless/bop run. I was so stoked.

Same here.
-informational speeches
-short essays and other writing projects
-power point presentations
-digital manipulations
-design projects
-illustrations

They went very well over all. It never got any serious interest as far as getting new players but I was never heckled for it either. I went to 2 small colleges and I was known as the hacky sack guy. I was always confident and prepared with my work and people knew I was serious about the sport (at the time).

Doing all that in school definitely helped me later when ever I had to present at a demos.

I did a chemistry presentation on "could we genetically engineer a perfect footbagger?" I concluded that we wouldn't need to, because Vasek was already perfect (this was in 2002). It was awesome, I had the Ghostbusters theme, Rage Against the Machine and maybe another piece of music (it was a power point presentation). I basically went through the basics of genetics and genetically engineering and was really answering the bigger question of; "Do we have the technology to make super humans, and if not, when will we?" I also talked about the ethical objections etc. (Who would object to a genetically engineered perfect footbagger?).

There were some pretty tough questions I had to deal with, like even if we made somebody physically perfect for footbag, would that be all we could do, or are there more aspects than physical aspects that make somebody good at footbag? In particular I was thinking about neurology and how important attitude and hard work is to being a good footbagger. Could we engineer in those traits as well? Could we engineer in a desire to be good specifically at the sport of footbag?

You should post the power point online.

I did footbag and hacky for my english presentations 3 years in a row and then one for one of my university papers. Each of them were different and can't remember how I tied it in to all of them accept when I had to teach the class something (that one was obvious).

For my uni one I got a A though, shows practise does make perfect. :)

I gave a speech on footbag but most people didn't take it seriously. I got a few people interested though.

I've written about footbag for class assignments for all four years of high school. At least 3 assignments on footbag each year.

And in college, I wrote one essay on footbag last semester ... I don't think I'll be doing anymore of those in college.

I did an informal speech on hacky sack for one of my freshman courses. I got lots of good laughs, a nice applause, and a B+ for my efforts. :D

I've performed footbag, submitted a speech on footbag, submitted an essay and poem on footbag.

Why shouldn't you do it? If it meets the requirements of the assessment task then alls good.

the poem was about me hitting ripwalk for the first time years ago :P
