I know it would never happen, but you do know that if you moved to Southern Ca while I'm living up here I would rip your _____ out of your _____, right?

Brad put up a very interesting question in General Footbag.

Do You Actually Try To Get Better?

Back when I used to freestyle. I did try to some degree. I've never pushed myself, though. I often wonder how good I could have been had I actually focused and practiced diligently. So why did I not practice? Simple, I can't fucking stand playing alone. When I first learned to hack there were always plenty of people to play with at school. Socializing was just as much a part of playing as kicking the bag around. Sure, I probably could have drilled with others instead of playing solo but it would still seem like I'm not kicking for the fun of it. 4-square is no different. It's rare that I would just go outside and practice a trick shot or what have you.

It seems everything I do regarding this sport is for my own personal pleasure, not necessarily for the sport itself. I gather players so that I have people to kick with. I've switched to a "discipline" that's easier to attract new players. I schedule jams and make dozens of phone calls every weekend to make sure I'm not the only one at the session.

So I'm forced to wonder if I've ever had a passion for footbag. Was it all a desperate need to ensure that I had an escape from my real life? And if that's the case, is it a bad thing? Does it seem selfish or self-centered?

So what if I had a great career instead of just a job and life was perfect, would I have needed footbag at all? Would there still be something to attract me and keep me playing?

I don't know.

I do know that because of footbag, I've got a colorful and diverse set of close friends that I, in all likelihood, never would have met otherwise. I can't even begin to comprehend how terribly boring my life could be without them. I'd like to think that I'm definitely a better person for having know them all. Maybe that's a good enough reason to have started playing.

Did anyone else shudder at the thought of me being a total shitbag of a person if it wasn't for woodpeck?

I don't think the fact you love playing others detracts from your passion for the sport. No basketball lover always plays alone. And think about all the joy that comes out when playing hack at the festivals and getting an awesome rally. Remember playing outside crown with greg. SO much fun.

Yeah, I don't think a drive to continuously improve at freestyle (or any discipline) directly relates to having passion for the game. That connection and the general negative feel to his initial post is why I responded kind of like a dick in Brad's thread.

If you could exchange footbag right now for a great career right now with no negative repercussions, would you do it?

edit: That last question was not meant to be rhetorical, I'm honestly asking.

edit 2: I was almost tempted to leave it because it's funny, but I changed the part about how much I like dick to what I actually meant to say. Damn you Freud, you got me again!

Good post zeke. I think you have a lot of passion for footbag.

and Reile, look at your last post. You actually wrote this: " feel to his initial post is why I kind of like a dick in Brad's thread. "

I guess most of this should be posted in the club blog but I really don't feel like breaking it up into 2 posts.

I almost literally had a shitty day last Wednesday at work. With that in mind, my answer to Reile's question would be a most emphatic, " Hell Fucking YEAH!".

Started cleaning up LaRAZA on Thursday. Jogged and finished cleaning up on Friday before I went to work. When I got home Reile and I ordered some pizzas and waited for Ronnie, Zach and Tom to come. When they got in, we ate, played some Guitar Hero and watched Dan's 'extra footage' tape. God I love Blind Man's Bluff!!      . Tom left and Kamil showed up after work just to hang out with Zach. Pretty fun night.

I woke up Saturday morning and found Zach already up. We talked a bit before Reile woke up. Me and the roomie then made a big breakfast and all 3 of us actually sat at the table to eat and talk some more. It's always cool to have Zack visit. I might have only hung out with the guy 6-7 times in my life and yet I feel like he's just one of the O.G.'s that just lives farther away.

Nathan and Ronnie were already at Millennium park when we showed up. Freddy and Tom soon arrived. Shred and 4-square for the rest of the afternoon. Zach played squares! I shred for a little bit! After the session all of us took the train and got some dinner at Hoaggie Hut. I lost Ronnie to freestyle. Then we all crammed into Reile's Van and drove to LaRAZA to hang out some more. On the way over I donned a gas mask and hard hat and we continued "Would you rather..." that was started at the restaurant.

At home, I helped Ronnie play Resident Evil 4 That was hilarious! We watched him play for most of the night only taking a break for all of us to walk to Target to satisfy Tom's chocolate craving. We might have broken the escalator but redeemed ourselves by getting a hack before we left the store. Ronnie continued to play as Tom did some research on tubgirl and things way, WAY worse by comparison. As you would imagine, it could only get worse. At one point, the guys tested their resolve one by one but they all turned away completely repulsed. I figured it must have been pretty bad and I would regret seeing it for myself so I never checked to see what made them gross out.

Made breakfast for Zach Sunday. Reile dropped him off before his train left at noon. Had a session with Nathan, Freddy, Marty, Twitch and Ronnie. We started off playing a few games of timed 4S. Both Nathan and Twitch won a game. Played Ace Everyone playing to 50 points. Marty got a monster win after intentionally losing 30+ points! Ronnie got his first win against me, Twitch and Marty. I went to shred a little bit with Freddy and Nathan as some 2S games went on behind us.

Marty went 5-0 by the time I challenged him. It was a pretty even match but he eventually took the win. I put on a trick shot clinic against him but my inability to defend my left side proved fatal. He won 3 more when I got my rematch. I continues to attack his front right corner with consistent success landing shots less than inches away from the line. I adapted to his offense by playing deeper to my left side and focused on taking less risky shots. I won the rematch but he was in the lead most of the game. As the session ended we practiced a little double dutch in hopes of making Regionals this year 8O

Random highlights:
-Shot of the day. Ronnie with a dashing knee from out of bounds while avoiding a weak check from Marty. The pass was good and killed Martin.
-I hit a flapper kick to Twitch's front right corner
-Marty setting up some co-op screens that aced me both times.
-I ducked a low rainbow-ish outside kick that landed just past the line in another square.

Uh wut duh hell?

Jogging

The past 2 weeks I've just jogged around the neighborhood around LaRAZA. It's about a mile per lap. The best I could manage was running about half a mile and walking a bit to catch my breath then run again to finish off the mile. I do this for up to 2 miles. I'm completely exhausted at the end.

I got a new pair of Nike Assails in the mail today and jogged at the park near the office which is about 3/4 of a mile around. To my surprise I finished the first lap feeling strong and continued to try another 1/2 lap before I need to catch my breath. Another 1/2 lap goes by and I've still go my breath and a good rhythm going. Next thing I know I've done 2 laps non stop, about a mile and a half! End of the lap comes and goes and I'm still feeling strong so I go for a third. The whole time my mind was focused and not waging civil war. I finish the third lap about as easily as I had done the previous two. I started walking back to the office. About a block into it I decided to jog the rest of the way to end up running a total of just under 3 miles this morning!

I get to work feeling a little tired but not completely spent. Was it the new shoes? The change in scenery? A complete miscalculation? I don't know. but that's easily the best run I've ever had. I might just run 5 days a week instead of 3 if I can keep this up.

Jogged another 2 1/4 miles nonstop today. Then jogged back to work for a total of 3 miles. Already lost 2 pounds since I started running. My diet can be better. I've switched to 4 small meals a day without too many problems but my portions and grease intake can definatilybe cut down. I still need to drink more wather, though.

I'm having a pretty bad allergy day. I have not had one this bad in years. I don't think I'll be sleeping well tonight.

Didn't run today. Suffered a minor sprain of the ankle at yesterdays session. I came down pretty hard but I still had some mobility in the joint and was able to walk around afterwards. It really didn't start hurting until I brought the garbage downtairs later that night

I'll have to bike to get my cardio for the week. My ankle was probably good enough to do it today... but I just slept in  Why is it always so easy to make excuses? I'm not comfortable with the fact that there's even a conflict. I need to get to the point where I just do it.
