How to Make a routine?

Post by sen »

So, it sounds like I might be going to Worlds this year, and therefore I will need to come up with a routine. I have no clue how to do this, so any advice would be appreciated. I thought there was a thread on it somewhere, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Just general advice would be great. How to pick a song, how to sync it well, what type of tricks. I've never really been a fan of routines, so this will be challenging.

PS: I'm thinking of skipping routines completly. Can you just go in Shred Thirty and big3 (intermediate)

I'm not sure what kind of answeres might come about, but I'm also treading in new water when it comes to creating a routine.

There isn't one.

I'm making my (first) routine right now. I just picked a song. Then I shred to it. Try and keep on the beat, and do big moves when big stuff happens in the song.

Thanks.

I just went and checked the schedule. I could have swore I saw that in there. So, I guess my question can still stand only for just shred 30.

Thanks for the tips, but I'd still like some more. I think I'll start listening to music and see what I come up with.

Listen to lots of mid-tempo songs with slow intros and fast mid sections. That way you can 'warm up' into the fast and furious shit. ect ect Just use practice shredding to a song you like, think of tricks that 'explain' what the song is doing/saying. Big adds during breaks and cymbal splashes and the such, ya' know?

I'm thinking a few songs that might work. Only problem is I don't have any real big moves... Oh well, I'll figure something out. More help is appreciated.

i think choreography (sp?) is more important than throwing down insanely huge tricks, expecially in the intermediate level.

Agreed, but slightly larger stuff at the right time should (I think) be part of the choreography.

The main thing you want to work on is making the moves fit the song. You can string 5+ add moves together like crazy, but if they don't match the song then you're fucked. As Zeb said, you want to choreograph the song well. If you have a routine that matches the song perfectly, dosn't matter if you don't do anything above 3adds, you'll stand a good chance of doing well.

Practice and concentration solve that. Dropping a bag isn't a big deal, just play it off and continue on, if you make a big deal about it and obsess about dropping the bag, then you will. Be confident in your abilities, the only reason you can't do something is because of lack of practice or concentration.

Sanuke, just wondering, but do you have any actual experience with routines?

Nope helped a bud though, simple concept , choreographing works in the same way for anything. It's just a matter of knowing how something works.

Jan Zimmerman made a fantastic post about routines once. Somebody with more time should look it up.

Easy enough-

Doesn't really tell you 'how' to put one together, but it does tell you exactly what to shoot for in your routine. So more advice is welcome, i plan on doing some sort of routine as well in the not so distant future.

oh and to quote Jan Zimmerman: "i don't care if its choreographed or not, as long as it looks that way."

That's the one I had saw before. Thanks for pulling it up. Still looking for more advice on how to actually make one.
