Merlin is downtime symposium blur.

If you are OK with swirl dexes being *EDIT* horizontal, then what's the difference between those and the dexes on symposium blur? What about symposium whirl?

What I'm getting at is that maybe people take issue with the 2nd dex in beta frantic because it is described as "pixie symp miraging", whereas maybe that second dex would better be described in a different way. I'm arguing that whatever you choose to call it, the second dex in my beta frantic is as much of a dex as the second dex in merlin, or the dex in a symp whirl/swirl.

No, that's not what I said at all. I said that swirl dexes are one of the only dexes that are okay HORIZONTAL. Swirls that become too verticle are often THE.

With regard to the symp. whirl, you are starting to sound pretty persuasive. I'm still far from entirely convinced that mirage or illusion are okay horizontal, though.

And I've been suspicious of Merlin for a while now.

edit: I can't help but be reminded of a little incident at Worlds in Prague. Walking back to the Pyramida hotel late one night and passing through down-town, I was deep in a similar technical conversation with Josh Benham and James Geraci. A young woman passing by pointedly remarked "thats the nerdies conversation I've ever heard" and kept walking. But fuck that bitch, we were in Prague to compete in the World Championships, and having lots of fun partying with Czechs and Finns and Danes and Germans, Japanes, French, etc. She was probably just some sorority bimbo in Prague to blow off a semester drinking with other Americans studying abroad. I think I was probably making more of my time there than her. Also, at first I thought she had said "thats the dirtiest conversation I ever heard", which was confusing, but funny.

Read the whole post, and the ones above it, not just the first 5 words. I was disagreeing with the statement that all symposium frantic sets are 'the,' and therefore agreeing with the sentiment that some are not 'the.' I'm sorry you found this hard to understand.

As I said in my original post, many people have different definitions of "the," a great example was a video I posted a while ago where I hit pixie torque (flip) at the end. In my opinion the pixie set was definitely 'the' and I showed it to a lot of people who all said they thought it was ok. Of course in footbag people often tell you what you want to hear anyway, but if we assume that some of these people are honest, it's obvious that there are different definitions of cleanliness. I called it "the" for the same reason I called Ken's pixie set, because if the bag drops below the foot, and perhaps my screenshot is not very clear on this, but check it out in the video for yourself, then you're doing the action above the bag, instead of around it, even if, as I did in the video in question, and as Ken does here, you bring the foot back down in front of the bag. In a case like this, because your leg is already pushed to the outside of the bag, you can only pass it along the fronts of your foot anyway.

Regarding quantum sets; the notation is toe>op in. It is not toe>op swirl or toe>op over. The correct way of doing a quantum set is stalling on the toe, then going around the bag from in to out. If, as is demonstrated by the picture, you go behind the bag, up over it and then back down in front of it, you're not going around it from in to out at all, you're going from back to front. You could name that something else, and give it a different job's notation, but it's not a quantum set. There are countless examples of clean quantum sets that I'm sure people can find.

If somebody is going to then claim to have hit a clean pixie quantum set (as opposed to a pixie non xbody swirl, or whatever you want to call it), it could only be legitimate if both the pixie and quantum dexes are legitimate pixie and quantum dexes. Likewise if you're then going to make one of the dexes symposium, if you're still claiming that it's a pixie symposium quantum set, it still has to fit the definitions of pixie and quantum.

In my opinion footbag is about skill, it's about doing technically hard things with your feet and a bag. While we could argue that pixie symp non crossbody swirling set is a legitimate set, part of skill is doing the thing you're setting out to do. If you're playing pool and you miss your shot, but sink the ball in a different pocket, you've missed by a long way and played a bad shot, even though you've still done something legitimate. Likewise, if you attempt to hit a pixie symposium quantum set, and you don't, you're doing the move wrong for what you wanted to do. It may be a legitimate move, but it's still a 'the' pixie symposium quantum set, going by the clear definition of what that set is.

I think if the bag is at his ankle, and we could illuminate his ankle with an led or something and take a 2 second time lapse photo of the set, the "ring" made by the LED on the time lapse would show a circle around the bag. his foot may be over the bag at some point, but I don't think this is the. Sounds like we have a pretty different definition of the.

Are we talking about the same image? It's clearly below his ankle, there is a shoe width difference in height from the ground from the bag to the lowest point of his foot. I can't understand how could you not agree that the bag is below is foot.

Does this make it clearer?

edit; sorry I misunderstood you Matt, my bad. I'm late for work anyway, will post my thoughts about this time tomorrow :P

I had had something else written here, but I'm just going to say, I find that little diagram there pretty offensive. you might consider dulling your edge a bit, buddy.

There was a dex there for sure, regardless of whether or not you think that it was back-front or in-out. The bag is in front of the leg, then the leg is above it, then the leg is in front of the bag, and then the bag is above the leg. The leg clearly completes a circle around the bag albeit a fairly vertical circle.

When out-in dexes are done up-time (atomic) they are almost always "hippy" and are truly out-in, but when they are done downtime (illusions), they are often "leggy" and are done in a more front-back style.

In-out dexes are the opposite. When done uptime (quantum) they are done in a more "leggy" back-front way, and when they are done downtime (mirages) they are more "hippy" in-out.

It is just easier to change between hippy and leggy when you are doing uptime and downtime because thats how our legs naturally work. Like Ken said, all voodoos/merlins would be "the" under your definition and that is ridiculous. They aren't "the", and they shouldn't be classified by different jobs notations, they are just stylistically different (leggy/hippy) ways of doing the dexes that everyone does to one extent or another.

The harder the trick is the more someone leans towards either hippy or leggy. In a pixie symp quantum set you have to move your legs very fast and so you naturally move in the most natural way which is a more back-front motion. Similarly, I do a lot of eggbeaters, and for something like bubbabeater I do more of an out-in dex, but for something like ducking ps egg the dex is mostly front-back. Both dexes are there and are equally deep, but one is more vertical and one is more horizontal.

It would be impossible to really make two different moves out of quantum, one in-out and one back-front in this case because people do quantums anywhere on the spectrum between you, Jeremy, who claims to have truly in-out quantums and Ken who has fairly back-front quantums. It seems that the average footbagger falls somewhere in the middle of this spectrum (mostly more towards Ken's method from what I've seen an how I do them myself). Breaking up the set would just make people confused when their set is somewhere between the two.

Ive seen Ken hit a lot of quantum and they are always kind of back-front it seems to me, it is not some missed pool shot, it is a stylistic difference.

Not everyone will dex the exact same way, and they are not wrong because their style isnt the same as yours.

Cammel said it well. For atomic and quantum sets there appears to be two styles to hitting them:

- hippy (keeping the shin perpendicular to the ground)
- leggy (dexing with the shin nearly parallel to the ground)

It seems that Jeremy is arguing that a quantum set should be hit hippy style and that if done leggy style (also called the non x-bod swirl way) then it is the. In order to see if I have gotten this right I have a question for Jeremy:

- would you say that both dexes in warping set (symp atomic atomic) are the? They seem to be the exact rewind of a leggy quantum type of dex, so I'm guessing that by your standards you'd find them the also.

Max and Cammel,

Thats bogus. One can still keep their foot below the height of the bag AT ALL TIMES throughout a leggy dex. If its not, its THE.

I do leggy dexes. I do almost exclusively leggy dexes (when I do frontside stuff, that is, which, admittedly, is a very small fraction of my game), and I used to get my foot up higher than the bag on my eggbeaters and stuff, but I came to realize that was THE many years ago, and learned to keep my foot below the bag all the way through the tricks, even though my dexes are still leggy.

Doing dexes Leggy is not an excuse to THE.
