So I just packed because I'm going home this weekend for easter. Should be alright.
Nothing new. Getting used to new shoes. Sucks. Two really bad sessions brought my ego down.
Reverted back to facile for my last few bags. Might have a few at grass. If you are going and want one get at me fast.
Paul A. got me in the grass juggling show. Gotta prepare.
Out.

David's thought about todexon, nurtigrain bars, and girls.
Hi. Today I'm going to give you my opinion of the todexon routines. Why? Because no one asked for it. You might be saying, "David, what place do you have to judge world class freestylers doing their routines in a country you can't even locate on a map?" Well young scholar, I think I know a thing or two about the hacky ball. Let's move on.
So when I first heard Jorden beat Vasek (from now on reffered to as mr. canadian bacon and the silver child, respectivley), I was shocked. Stunned. I dropped the bowl of cherry condoms in my hand on the floor, it splattered on the concrete in a blend of absitinence and birth control. Not really, I was actually eating salad when my buddy alex told me to tell me the news. Was I shocked? Well, the burning sensation in my pants had to be either shock or that damn STD, but I'm pretty sure it was my bafflement at the win by Canadian Bacon.
You see, everyone on modified was recently saying how great vasek was, how no one was even close, and now canadian bacon throws him in the firey pits of 2nd place. Quite a shock, especially for the kids who were in the "have vasek come to school with you for a day" contest, run by yours truly. (its over, i won)
So I didn't really believe it as I sat there munching my greenery that the bacon man himself had made the golden child silver. But I reassed my situation. My mind rationalized as I was stuffing bread into my mouth, the oil and vinegar spraying like a Mr. Clean Auto Wash Kit. I thought, "well, CB has taken SC in worlds shred 30, why not add routines to the growing list of great success?" So I waited for the routines to be posted. And they were.
I downloaded the files and sat down with a big bowl of peanut butter, 2 kleenex tissues, my copy of "this week in ice skating", and my collection of coupons from germany. Bien.
I watched the routines with a skeptical eye (meaning, I squinted and turned the lights off, so all I saw was some half naked kid dancing, who watches this shit?). My skeptical eye did tell me a few things. And you might not care what these things are. But for the fans....
1) The routine that won was shred over art. Just think, if you listened to the songs used by the top 3 players would you really do routines to them? I mean, artsy routines. Vaseks had some good cues, and the section with the whimsical change where he did flyers was well done. He hit big tricks on every cymbal crash. His routine for the most part has some solid chereo. I thought it was nicely done. Jorden's was basically a jovial bacon fest, if I do say so myself. Difficulty wise, equal to vaseks. Chereo wise, a little less. Honza's was from like, 04, so I had already peanut buttered myself to the routine many a time. He seemed to wait on a lot of cues a little too long. Maybe it was just me. Anyway, someone said it was jordens best routine so far. Was it? I thought the chereo from Helsinki was better. I thought the tricks here were way above helsinki though. This shred winning idea is backed by the fact that cheers came from big tricks (fusion, double spinning clipper) that weren't on a beat or anything, they were just nicely placed in the song. You might think, "david, your an idiot", and although you might have studies to back that up, im not saying shred routines are bad. In fact, I like them more than the whole ice skatingish knee bump on a wind chime shit that most people love. I really like doing free form routines with hard shit to a song I like, and although some might say this shouldn't be what routines are like, it seems like the top players are doing stuff like this, and this time they won with it. It was told to me by Goldberg (whom you may respect or not), that routines are half tech, half art. So even if you hit 100 5's, if it's to silence, you only filled half of the plate. Back to Jorden's routine, yes, there was chereography, but not on the Ryan Mulroney level. Watch a Ryan Mulroney routine, the song and the shred match PERFECTLY. Peter Irish is a good example of this too. They show that chereography can whip the shit out of a tech routine, but it seems like now people don't care about that kind of stuff. And I must admit, that makes sence. It makes sence to do a tech routine when you school tech. I don't skool to bach's 9th overture praticing my walkovers when the oboe player decides to "get low". Anyway, something I noted. Overall, I favor a shred oriented routine. Thus, Jorden should of won, and he did. Good. Some more thoughts...
2) Variety : I think Jorden's win shows something else, that variety is becomming a bigger part of routines and that it matters now. If I could count, I would see how many unique tricks each player did. Maybe vasek did more, but it APPEARED to me that jorden had a lot more variety. Quantum ss butter, pdx. illusion>tripwalk, even shit like pdx. drifter was a nice touch. Spinning pickup was good. Double spin was a nice touch. It just seemed overall jorden did more different things and it is cool that he won with this method, because it reinforces what I have always said about being a balanced and broad player. It shows that wshirr x 30 might not be the best way to go about routines, but for shred, people really do eat that shit up. Anyway, just a point.
3) Drops. Top 3 routines have 2 drops each. This leads me to believe a few things. 1) sabotage. 2) by competing in a country that wasn't america they were awakening the souls of our fonding fathers, who took it as an offence, making gravity 10.9 ft/sec instead of the normal 9.8. 3) bad luck 4) slipper surface 5) that wack ass runway mirror. Ok, so I know you and I both are settled on option 2, but for the "realists" I'll focus on the others. Mainly, here's my beef, or should i say, pork (get it, canada = bacon country). 3 of the best players in the world all drop twice. Why? Vasek and Honza never drop. Like, ever. Maybe once. It just seems odd that people were dropping a lot, so i guess maybe there was a reason. I know I've played on slippery stages before (granted, i was stripping, not shredding). But it effected my er..... performance nonetheless. Anyway maybe people dropped because no one is perfect, and because they were doing hard routines and were tired. No worries, just saying it was odd.
4) shit I am way too tired to talk about this more.
Post your views, tell me why I'm an idiot, send me flowers, whatever works. Please, if you post, be educated. If you have never made a routine, I don't think you know a lot about this stuff. If you have never been to a tournament, or you dont know these players well, you can't really base your views off past performances / real life watching. But for those who do compete open and read this (do they exist?), tell me what you think. Anyway, I leave you with this:
Someone is going to say the next time they see a David Clavens routine:

And they might be right. I'm not very good at routines. I do shred 2:00's to poppy songs that i listen to when i drive around. i dont listen to classical music, so i dont really do routines to it. Anyway, I don't really have a good background in choreography (cept that 8 year old dance pagent), so you should take my opinion with a grain of salt, and it will come as no suprise when these guys kill me at worlds because they can make way better routines than I can, and the fact that I'm even critiquing them is bullshit. Who knows.some whiner who is mad he didnt win the take vasek to school contest wrote:David, you say all this shit like you know about routines and all you did was shred for 2 minutes, the song sucked, and you dropped 4 times. p.s your cute

I was told by a couple of ppl that were there that Vasek stopped at 1:30 because he cramped. And appeared to be struggling with it. And that Jorden got two shots at his routine because in the middle of his first one there was a blackout. Haven't seen the vids yet but ill take a llook at them later.
But about ppl saying Vasek is way above the rest blah blah, i think they mean that more on pure technical ability and not routines and all. As far as routines go, Vasek has had some clearly tough competition where if he had dropped once the other guy would have won (Worlds 2004,2006 etc). Think about Euros 2005. many thought he lost but he didnt. Vasek is of course beatable in routines. pure shred wise, i dont think so.

I ran today.
When I was in 8th grade I ran the mile in 6:50. Today I did it in 8:03. My new goal is to beat 6:50 by running a few times a week. If I have to sacrifice a little footbag, so be it. I refuse to think I am less fit now than I was in 8th grade. So I ran the mile and then sprinted some laps.
Best Mile: 8:03
Best Lap (208 yards) : 34.00
The bummer is at the end of my sprinting laps I was dead. If I wasn't, and could keep that pace (a sprint) for 8.3ish laps (a mile) I could hit really good mile times, but there is no wat I could sprint for most of it. I would be happy to jog 5 laps, run 1, and spring the last 2.3. This would get me below 6:50.
Let's get to work.

I saw your AIM away message that said running and I was like, "WTF!"
Props on staying fit.
Footbag actually helped my mile time.
My best is in like, the low 6's I think.
Sorry to semi-hijack your blog.

I read a chunk of my blog today starting on page 24 with the ant story. I really am happy that I write here and I'm really thankful I can go back and remember stuff. Things like my graduation post really just take a snapshot of a piece in time that I was living.
I may bash modified a lot and say I'm sick of it but this whole journal thing makes all the stupid posts seem so miniscule. I really am thankful I started this and people have commented all the way through. It's crazy to look back and read how I felt about things. I forget a lot of the stories I retold in here.
If you read my blog and enjoy it that means a lot to me. I'd like to think there are newbies and pros and everyone in between that reads what I write on these pages. I think the fact that this blog isn't really even about footbag but still gets read says a lot.
I'm home for the weekend because I didn't want to stay in Penn State, and I had some stuff to do back home. I played with Mike today and it was fun even though I sucked. It's alright though, I'll get back in shape when summer hits.
I'm going out to dinner with my parents. Later.
