Last minute session Yesterday @ Wright College. Hooked up with Ronnie and took the bus out there. It was a little over an hour to get to the freakin site. Met up with Tom and Freddy and found out that the school was on spring break. We hacked for a while to warm up then played a game of 4-square using the lines on the sidewalk. Tom won despite being handicapped by a jacket dog. Seriously. We then moved to a new spot to set up my rope court. Tom walked back home to drop off the dog with his sister. In his absence I won a game of 3 square taking advantage of the large 16x16 court but still generally playing like wet donkey poop. We started 4-square when Tom came back.

We tried his new rule, Last Man Standing(?). There is no score in the conventional sense but each player is allowed an x amount "lives". When he is killed (by committing a foul, kicking the bag out or taken out by another player) he loses a life. He can remain in the game but until he has zero lives and the remaining players continue until one player wins. Yet another cool rule, reminds of of Highlander. In fact this rule might be more true to the Highlander movie than the 2 previous rules we've used :D

First game was set to 5 lives per player. I was targeting Tom early and often since he can pretty much score at will. I might have only gotten 1 or 2 kills on him but putting him in the hole early was a big help in getting the win eventually.

The next game we played the same rule but with 7 lives for each player. This time I was targeted early and eventually eliminated. Those early kills really do factor in since there is now a sense of urgency to stay in the game. You either play more determined or play very sloppy. Tom gets the win over Ronnie after eliminating me and Freddy. Both games had plenty of long rounds and good saves but all that was nothing compared to the final game.

Highlander Beta was in play. Again, I tried to get Tom early but he managed to ace me and Ronnie first and jump out to a commanding lead. I eventually aced Ronnie and sneaked in a kill on Tom. Now we both needed a kill on Freddy for the win. Fredward, who was well aware of the situation, put on his game face and proceeded to to play the best defense I think I've ever seen any one play in such a long period of time. No joke, no exaggeration.

I watched him during the first round of 4S at NYJ and he confidently sent back just about every shot that was sent his way with ease. Yesterday, we all watched as he took it up another level. Against me and Tom he played off multiple body screens, snaked us while we set up, dug short passes, adjusted to double taps and returned both high and low arcing shots. This went on round after round. I don't know about Tom, but I was getting pretty frustrated! We even resorted to helping Freddy defend his square from each other in a frantic swarm of swinging legs and flying feet. I think the constant barrage was eventually wearing Freddy out, though.

In the final play I had the bag at king, Ronnie @3, Freddy diagonal from me @2 then Tom @1. I backed off from the first square to prevent any snaking. Ronnie was standing near the center of the court as Freddy shifted position to peak over Ronnie's left shoulder. I saw my opportunity and used Ronnie as an unintentional screen (just as Tom was warning him of it) and launched a desperate shot to Freddy's right corner. Freddy lunged for the pass but it miraculously sailed just above his right leg for the ace and the win. Finally! Great game. Props went all around, specially for Freddy and the way he played.

Can't wait to play more squares!

Just talked with Reile... man, we've played a lot the past 8 days.
-Thursday- Lane
-Saturday- LaRAZA
-Sunday- Welles Park
-Monday- Welles Park
-Tuesday- Northeastern University
-Thursday- Wright College
-Today-Millennium Park

Between the jogging and all the 4S my body has been constantly sore. Had a long hack session with Ronnie, Freddy and Nathan today. Went to Fontano's for a sandwich, hacked at Grant Park, met up with Freddy, absolutely destroyed one of the toilets in Millennium Park then hooked up with Nathan who got off work early. We got kicked out of one of the tunnels while trying to play away from the wind. We ended up hacking by the Cloud Gate for hours with Cudo joining us last minute.

We then played two LONG games of squares. In the first game, Nathan hung in for a tough win after a concentrated effort by all of us to stifle his offense. I managed to eek out an ugly win in the second game due mostly through the misfortunes of others.

Freddy continued playing well getting into many epic duels with me and Nathan. He also was one of the top scorers in both games. Saw him hit DATW earlier too!

Cudo sux at circle kicking but still manages to raise a few eyebrows while playing squares. I actually saw him get into a long duel with Nathan that lasted several volleys. He even killed me with the old walk-the-bag-to-the-line-and-fake-a-kick shot. He's not too bad without more Lane kids around, he was actually kinda quiet today.

Ronnie continues to be too aggressive over the line and gets frustrated at the calls against him. He tends to kick the bag longer than he needs to and often loses control the longer his rally goes. He does show flashes of brilliance with his double taps executing them with perfect timing from time to time. I think he just needs to pick his opportunities better. What puzzles me about him is that he's a decent at hacking but it doesn't translate onto the 4S court. When I kicked with him at Grant Park he hit kicks I've seen him miss while playing squares. Does anyone else think he makes more than a few shady calls?

I didn't notice a lot of shady calls (no more than anybody else's questionable calls on low/spike) but definitely noticed the grumbling over all the calls against him. And he could get a lot more calls against him for contact/interference.

He plays way too close to the line and doesn't take anyone's advice to center himself in his square. I think I frustrated him with a couple well-placed close shots early in game one, and so he spent the rest of the day trying to avoid that. Foolish.

Basically, he's still having a hard time with 4sq being something other than hacking inside a square.

He did have a couple shady calls, but i knew he was kidding cause when he called low/spike, you could tell he was ready to leave his square.

He's gotta stop crossing that line.

Tomorrow is Easter, so I prolly won't be able to go to Navy Pier.

Also, Ronnie is still new to 4S, so just give him a little time. I'm glad he's really interested. I just told him about modified.

That pic above is HIGH-larrious.

9 games of squares on Saturday.
-played 5 games with the "wall rule" in effect. In the first game, Reile Texas Chainsaw Massacred us by jumping to 13 points before most of us could get going. At game point he served to the next highest score... it was only 3 points! He and Nathan both won 2 games and I got a win in there somewhere.
-all the games started silly but as someone got closer to game point you could see the mood change.
-Man, I was getting some NASTY off-the-wall kills. Got most of my power shots just above the line. It was almost unfair. My favorite was a left outside set to a back spinning right outside kick.
-Lots of good saves from everybody since the squares were SO HUGE
-Just about everybody but Ronnie was taking advantage of deep shots on the big courts. Particularly Reile who went for the long power shot (more often than not landing in the back corner of 2sq) after saving off the wall.

Highlander
-Reile had never played any of the Highlander rules so we played 4 more games using the different variations.
-He won his first game playing Beta
-I won the next few games of Gamma, Alpha and Gamma again
Sunday
-Nathan, Freddy, Ronnie and me
-Everyone was pretty much just off to themselves drilling.
-Played a game of 2S with Freddy
-Played a game of 2S with Ronnie. We were going to play a best of 3 match but we got kicked out by security.

While in the process of explaining why we were getting kicked out I pointed out that there was a juggler in the next hall. I figure if we were getting the boot it would only be fair if he did too. She went after him. We started gathering our stuff when security and the juggler came walking back, I was kinda hoping we would have been on the way out in case the juggler put 2 & 2 together and went after us. Next thing I know I hear a deep voice screaming my name. What the fuck!?!?!?!?! I nervously turn around and this big black dude comes around the corner. I look up at him and it turned out to be Tony, the juggler from Oak Street Beach!!!! He moved to Hawaii several years ago and I did hear he was moving back soon but I didn't expect to see him at the pier. It was great talking to him. After only a few minutes you can easily see why everybody knows and loves this guy. Spend some time with him at Oak Street and you can't go 2 minutes without someone greeting him as they pass on the bike path.

I told him I was the reason he got kicked out and we all got a big laugh out of it. It was really great to just talk and catch up, Oak Street just isn't the same without him. All the more reason to play at the beach! :D

I overwhelmingly concur...the girls there are most excellent. That's also within walking distance of my place, so pre- or post-kicking hangout and alcohol is on me. :)

Nathan, if C4 (Chicago 4-square) ever gets started I think your signature should be the club motto.
