Constant shin splints

Post by jrstubs »

I'm starting to get pissed off now. Every time I play footbag for longer than 20 minutes, I start to get shin splints, then the next day, after only playing for about 5 minutes my shins will start to hurt.

And I will have to stop playing for about a week for them to go away.

Ive used spencos walker/runner insoles
I used to stretch, but I stopped because it didn't help me any
And I think the whole reasoning behind my shin splints

is because I'm too fat :?

I'm 5'9 205 lbs

Help me fix my problem

1) read all the 5000 other threads with the exact same problem
2) DO TOE TAPS!!!!!!!!!!! It's actually really easy to get rid of them via this.
3) play on your toes
4) keep playing and you'll lose weight, probably helping the sitch.

I don't know if that's what he called toe taps but get on your toes and raise the higher you can on your toes ( SLOWLY, work better and work more ).

I've done a lot of them before gettin in freestyle and have very strong calf muscle, I don't remember having shin splints at a point where I can't play only for a single time, I guess that helped.

Pansy. Play through them. That's what real men do.

Normally I'd let you get away with sarcasm, because you're a funny guy, but I can't here. This is too serious.

Don't take this literally. This is about the worst possible thing you can do. If you continue to play through pain you will atrophy your shin muscles and begin to get hairline fractures on your shin bones. Instead of developing immunity to them, you will make yourself weaker more susceptible to them. The pain will get worse and worse and you could eventually get a full shin fracture.

I am currently resting through a mild case of the 'the splints'. That and toe taps are always the best way to go.

Also, make sure you get good insoles. I invested in a $40 pair of primo insoles and it really has been worth it.

Could a mod please condense this topic into the exisiting shin splints thread? Thanks.

I already knew that Ben :) I think they are called stress fractures. I'm not going to play for a week or so, I started doing toe taps 3 times a day starting yesterday, they should get better soon.

Toe taps = sit on a chair with your legs bent at a 90-degree angle. With your heels always touching the floor, tap your toes so that you feel a a tingley-burn in your shins (not pain, just...well you'll know...you should feel SOMETHING...)

You can also elevate your legs (when watching TV, or something), and heat with a heat pad or hot water bottle, or something.

I've recently re-developed shin splints (I've had them bad before, and recently they have come back and prevented me from doing a lot of stuff that I want to do). I also bought new insoles (they say you should replace them at least every 6 months, or something...?). I did a little research and discovered the stuff about heating and elevating -- but I guess maybe that's obvious stuff if you know anything about taking care of minor injuries? I dunno -- I don't :p

(Some mods should organize this forum like I did for the trick tips. I was going to back when I was still a mod, but never got around to it before I quit. The search function is totally useless...)
