New USA policy to jail sick people!
Considering about 1,700,000 people die from TB each year, I don't think it can be compared with the flu. There are also 8,900,000 new cases each year, and considering the fatality rate is over 50%, that's over 4 million people who are going to die of it in the future just due to infections from one year.

The point is that he's a serious threat to society, and society is prepared to allow him to remain in the community if he does his best to protect society, but if he refuses to make an effort, what options do they have? Thousands of people die of TB in the US each year...

Obviously, it can, because it just was.Jeremy wrote:I don't think it can be compared with the flu.
Ok. So, if 8,900,000 are infected each year, and 1,700,000 people die from it each year, how does that equal a 50% fatality rate? That's a 19% fatality rate.Jeremy wrote:Considering about 1,700,000 people die from TB each year, I don't think it can be compared with the flu. As I've already said, many many times. House arrest or hospitalization are perfectly effective options. Why do you keep asking the same question over and over again?Jeremy wrote:...what options do they have?

The U.S. may jail their unruly sick people, but Australia's PM is trying to ban sick people from coming to his country.

Are you mental? Obviously you can literally compare anything to anything. However to suggest that there should be consistency in the way society reacts to the flu and to TB is ridiculous. One kills millions of people and the other does not. One can be vaccinated against, and the other is drug resistant.Switch Kicker wrote:Obviously, it can, because it just was.Jeremy wrote:I don't think it can be compared with the flu.
Do you ever use your brain? The rate of TB infections is increasing rapidly, that's why people are worried about it. People who are infected do not usually die the same year that they're infected. Considering I sourced my stats from the World Health Organisation, I would assume that they're capable of doing primary school maths too.Ok. So, if 8,900,000 are infected each year, and 1,700,000 people die from it each year, how does that equal a 50% fatality rate? So 1.7 million died in 2004, but more will die in 2008 and the number of deaths will continue to increase.
It's a question of infrastructure. Clearly they do not have enough hospital beds for the 17,000 people in the US with TB. Neither do they have the resources to ensure that those people remain in house arrest. Neither do they have the time to wait until they do have the resources. With deadly infectious diseases, action needs to be taken immediately. As I've already said, many many times. House arrest or hospitalization are perfectly effective options. Why do you keep asking the same question over and over again?Jeremy wrote:...what options do they have?

"It's very uncommon that someone would both not want to take treatment and will willingly put others at risk," England said. "It's only those very uncommon incidents where we have to use legal authority through the courts to isolate somebody."
Once again. This is why he isn't under house arrest. I was nice on the first page, but damn son, you're dumb as a houseplant......not even one of those tricky wild plants.....a house plant.
It's important to note a couple of things about this;professor wrote:The U.S. may jail their unruly sick people, but Australia's PM is trying to ban sick people from coming to his country.

1. Most countries, certainly including the US, Canada, the UK and Australia already have laws in place restricting the immigration of people who have serious infectious disease.
2. Howard was not saying that Australia was going to introduce legislation, he was saying that he thought such legislation would be a good idea. In politics people are always very careful about what they're saying. I think it's very unlikely such legislation would be put in place, but that Howard was simply trying to appeal to voters as "sensible" and "protecting Australia from AIDS."
3. Such legislation would stop 9 people from migrating to Australia every year.
4. About 900 people are diagnosed with HIV in Australia every year, so this legislation would reduce the number of people with HIV in Australia by about 1%
5. About 25,000 people have HIV in Australia. You can see that stopping 9 people from migrating to Australia does not impact on this very significantly.

That doesn't even correspond to what I said, so it's a pretty inaccurate insult. And the all caps made your post sound like you're a loud obnoxious child. Sounds like it really just pissed you off or something.HG wrote:BUT JEREMY IF 900 PEOPLE ARE DIAGNOSED WITH HIV EACH YEAR THEN UHHHHH HOW CAN THERE BE 25,000 PEOPLE WITH HIV IN THE COUNTRY. And as for hospitalizing or putting massive amounts of people in house arrest... who the hell said anything about it? Besides you? We're talking about one man. Not thousands of people. One man. That's it. Thousands of people are not in a shitty jail cell practically rotting away... One man is.
This is beyond fucking ignorant, and I'm done with this thread. Jeremy, you are a stuck up asshole, and a fucking idiot. Not to mention big ass hypocrite. Go burn.

Please, do lock it. Sick of this douche nozzle riding around on his high horse. Can't ever admit he's wrong, not once.
I've even learned to accept Dan Feary, but you Jeremy, are one person I will never accept, ever. You're just a flat out dick. You think you're right, no matter what. As I think I've told you before.. you think you're the czar of right, and we're all floating in a sea of wrong. I swear to fucking god, you can say one thing one week, then next week, you could say something that completely contradicts what you said the week before, yet somehow, both of those statements will be true. You actually do it quite often, like right now.
One day, you're going to look back on your life, and you're going to hate yourself. And if I were to see it, all I would be able to bring myself to do, is laugh at your misery.

So back on track, I haven't read the entire thread so I'm sure someone has said this before. It's definitely worth it to sacrifice a person's quality of life to save countless others from contracting horrible diseases. Cold hard fact. I'm not saying we should kill sick people, but we live in such a populated world that it would be stupid not to take those steps to protect everyone else.

What exactly is he wrong about? Do you have a concrete argument about why this person should not be detained? Give us a paragraph or two explaining why this man should not be detained, and then maybe you might be taken seriously. I have disproved your argument three times now, yet you seem to remain oblivious. Please respond without insults....facts only. That is a challenge. A challenge to actually debate a topic, instead of blowing up the second you see a crack in your own arguments and insulting and flaming the people that have revealed it.Switch Kicker wrote:Please, do lock it. Jeremy called you out on your poor reasoning, and instead of rebutting his claim, you proceeded to call him a "fucking idiot" a "stuck up asshole" and a big ass hypocrite". You only want this thread locked because you are wrong, and want it to disappear.
