I was wondering what you guys thought of this movie. I went to it a couple days ago. I thought it was incredible! It's now one of my top 3 movies of all time. And not just because it has a lot of violence and blood. I thought it was really well done. Every scene in the movie is picture perfect. The cinematography is amazing. The acting was really good. And the story line was somehow believable. It reminded me of something between Star Wars and Lord of the Rings with all the demons and orcs. But it didn't try to copy any other movie. It was totally original and I was completely enthralled in it the whole time. I liked how there wasn't much of a love story. It concentrated more on the warriors and how they dedicate their lives to battle. But there was also a good moral of the story; stand up for what you believe in.

I would rate this move 10 out of 10. One of the best, most original movies I've seen in years!

So if you have seen this movie, what did you think of it?
If you haven't seen it yet, GO NOW! See it in the theater before it's too late.

p.s. Once you see this you can break 300 in a shred 30.

Oh, I loved the movie, it kept clean with the Graphic Novel. I am amazed how much was shot on blue screens. Looks like the new thing to do now, and they pulled it off.

This was amazing I would also have to give it 10 out of 10

yeah, i've downloaded the movie 3 weeks ago. pretty good one. but they don't talk too much in this movie.

I haven't seen it yet but look forward to it.
A very reputible reviewer here in Sydney totally panned on the grounds that the values it lionises are starkly fascist to the point where it might as well be propoganda. He had no beef with its style but brutally attacked its point. He went so far as to say that Hitler would have loved it. Such a harsh burn. This dude clearly had an axe to grind probably in regards to comments Miller has made.

I guess I liked the movie, but I was also disappointed with it. It looked so cool in commercials and previews that I had pretty high expectation that I thought it didn't meet. Oh well.

I agree with Dyalan, the values portrayed by the heros were very disturbing. Consider the start of the movie with the bit about how the Spartans inspect all newborns and leave any crippled infants to die... and then there is the character of the deformed Spartan who was not left to die, Ephialtes, and who asks Leonidas to be allowed to help the Spartans. At first, I thought "okay, the purpose of this character is gonna be to show how that Spartan policy of killing imperfect children is wrong..." but they turned that completely around: Ephialtes the cripple, it turns out, betrays the Greeks to the Persians, demonstrating that he is not only imperfect on the outside, he is morally corrupted too. The message is that physical handicaps are an indication of moral handicaps... if somebody is ugly, then they are also untrustworthy. What a horrible message.

Historically, there was a man named Ephialtes who is one of several thought to have betrayed the Greeks. I couldn't really find any indication that he was some hidiously deformed person, thought.

Also, I just didn't like certain stylistic choices of the director. In particular, the way he chose to show all the scenes of individual combat (Spartans fighting singly or in pairs, as opposed their massed Phalanx) left me pretty annoyed. It was just over-stylized. And there wasn't really anything that bad about that style, except that he used the same stylistic approach for EVERY scene of individual combat, over and over again. I just got tired of that approach real quick. What I mean is how, whenever the Spartans were fighting (except in the Phalanx) the combat moves were all in slow-motion, and the little bits between were all sped-up. Every time. Dispatch a foe in slow-mo, find another opponent in fast-forward, stab him in slow-mo, look for someone else to kill double-quick. That whole shtick might have been cool if the director had used that bit once or twice, but there was scene after scene after scene just like it. Its like watching a long shred vid with every combo in slow-mo. Slow-mo shred is cool, but only if its mixed with some regular-speed action too.

I didn't really like the voice-over narration either, which is strange, because I usually really go in for that kind of thing. I love the voice-over in the beginning and end of "The Road Warrior", and stuff like that, but something about the story-teller device wasn't working for me in "300".

I did really dig the spectacle of the craziness of the Persian King's (Xerxes) entourage - all those crazy costumes, the dancers, the executioner with the blade-arms, Xerxes himself... The Persians were pimped out in all kinds of different ways. The throne they carried Xerxes around on was dope too. And I liked the scene between Leonidas and Xerxes too:

Xerxes - "Our cultures have so much we could share with each-other..."
Leonidas - "Have you not noticed? We've been sharing our culture with you all morning." LOL

That was a good scene. It wasn't enough, though. And I had such high hopes...

Go see Grindhouse

I'm going to hijack every movie thread.

300 was visually, very appealing. So much CGI to take in with every shot. The story was just a little too hollywoodized at some points, but overall a very entertaining film. It's nowhere near Sin City or Grindhouse though.

300... Saw it 4 times. Heh. I love that movie. Easily one of my favorite movies. Nothing is better than Hook though.

Anyway. The third time I saw it, I was with my buddy John, and when we came out of the theater, he said, "This is sssspartaaah, silly." In a really really gay, femmy voice, and then did the kicking motion, however he waved his arms out like he was about to start doing "spirit fingers" or something from cheer leading, lol. And the kick itself was very weak and gay looking. Not ripping on the movie, just having some fun, lol. That was easily one of funniest things I've seen in a while.

Damn good movie. And isn't that a true story? (Hollywood-ized of course, but based of a true story.)

I plan to go see Grindhouse soon. It looks good. It's a cool idea to put two movies together.

To me this is why you didn't like the movie. When I go to see a movie I try to not have any expectations. I try not to watch previews cause they tend to give things away. A lot of times if you think it's gonna be an incredible movie you will be let down. But if you go in completely neutral you may like it better. I thought it was a very entertaining movie. I guess I didn't care they were tossing babies into a pit. I actually thought it made it seem more brutal. Like being a warrior is the most important thing if you're a spartan. I loved the whole first of the movie. And I really like the narration. Especially how at the end it shows the spartan telling the story. I agree they messed up with that one deformed hunchback. And it was obvious he would betray Leonidus but I thought all those side characters were interesting. I didn't really get tired of the slo mo. Every scene looked so perfect I couldn't complain. And it was much better than some other fighting scenes from movies. At least you can see what they're doing. In pg-13 movies like Lord of the Rings or Batman Begins they always zoom way in on the fights and all you see is a jumbled mess. You can't tell what's going on. In 300 they show a lot of close up shots of battle and some panoramic shots of the war. I agree they should've done some intermediate shots of like the whole spartan army fighting together.

I guess I just thought Jon's post was a little harsh. I gotta back this movie up!

My favorite scene was one of the first slow motion battle scenes, when they first attack the Spartans. Leonidus (SP?) is charging through them all and just fuckin' each of em up. But that part that made it just... insanely bad ass, was when he had his back turned for a second, and then an enemy flies towards him, and he merely turns and lightly (lightly for him anyway...) smacks the guy with his shield. The guy flies back 5 feet, and Leonidus just stands up all tall and fuckin' ripped, and it's just an insane scene. Then he just executes the poor soul. Twas insane on an extreme level. LOVE this movie.

I didnt get though how there were all these hellish type monsters in there, like the fat execution guy with swords for arms. Everything else seemed plausible (except maybe Ephialtes being that badly deformed from birth, and that giant dude), so why was there these few random monsters?

And yes im pretty sure its based on a true story, whoever asked.

All that crap wasn't even in the book (except the elephants, I think). Everything else is almost frame-for-panel exactly the same -- it's cool (except the ending, which was disappointing and detracted from the, kind of, point of the book (300) -- why would they end the movie with 3000?...dumb.)

I was definately disappointed to not hear the awesome trailer song in the movie. To me, watching the trailer over and over, that song totally became "the 300 song" and that's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the movie...

Grindhouse was cool.

It was really overly violent a lot, though. But I guess that was the point. I really liked the second half of the Tarantino movie.

Yeah saw this today with my brother. Was entertaining, but the dialogue is sooooooooooooo bad. We laughed so much at some of the stuff that gets said. Also most of the acting was pretty woeful. Visually impressive though, and I thought David Wenham was awesome, although you could tell that his muscles were CG

Wasn't too concerned about the morality of the movie, although all the stuff about freedom was a little annoying, especially when the Spartans had a king...

Also what was with the fat guy with swords for hands? That was funny, but pretty ridiculous too.
