Naw, I'm saying no to library school.
A big reason is that I would need to do another 2 years additional onto my bachelor's, which is such a pain in the ass and that I would want to do co-op, which would be a bunch of years, and would cost a TON at UofT, or Western, where I was planning to go.

The main reason though, is that it totally isn't my calling. It's just something that I would have been satisfied with, you know? I gotta draw - meeting Mike Faille has taught me that. I was also told by a psychic that I should persue illustration (that was a joke, because I'm not into that, but I think it's a strong, non-serious point). I couldn't really just say that the way I would say it in words so that you would know I'm sarcastic.

Anyway, Matt Cross is going into library science, though...

As for tip on consec blurry rev whirls, Janis...lemme see. There's something about rev whirls that is significantly NON-whirl-esque... Let's see if I can think of something useful without actually doing it and then giving tip...I'm sitting on a couch right now... but without trying here is some stuff:
-set low (I think knee height is good) <-- this might mean "move fast"
-for the dex, like all rev whirls moves, think about these three things:
1) realize that it's basically just half a dex
2) "overdex" and spin "inwards" to complete the dex and end with the bag right at your clipper
3) "fall" into the dex. Instead of complete tension in your dex while going AROUND the bag, like in regular whirl, relax your leg and only tense on the dex while going DOWN. (Related to this point is a tip that Jorden gave me on rev whirl SETS and that's basically what I just said except he put it this way: "set really low, bring your leg up, relaxed, with the bag, and THEN strike down fast"...well...in his words, in my words...)

Yeah, I dunno...I'll try to think of tips next time. I'm definately going for more next session. You also asked me to film rev whirlwinds, and I have, but the video won't be out for a while... Maybe if we ever end up filming more move demos for the Hackrifice website I will do all of my re whirl moves... maybe that's lame though -- I think lameness is the reason that we didn't film rev whirl moves in the first place...they're not mainstream enough -- I can't host videos of every single variation of every single move...well, we'll see. Maybe I'll make a special "learn rev whirls" video.

We had a pretty decent session today. Highlights ensue:
-far rev whirl > spinning rev whirl [repeat]
-rev tomahawk x 2
-rev hatchet > handcatch > rev hatchet > rev hatchet > handcatch
-flip rev hatchet
-rev hatchet > rev tomahawk both sides? (may have dropped one side...)
-OH! VORTEX > MOBIUS!! (a dream combo! so close a million times on the other side)

Really close to blurry rev whirl > spin rev whirl [repeat], and the same but with rev tomahawks instead of blurry rev whirls...well not super close, but I will hit these combos soon. Especially the first one. Rev tomahawks are new, but I want to own them!! I had most of the links which felt good, even if I didn't hit the full combos.
I also had spinning rev whirl x2 roll off a million times both sides -- that feels good

(but not nearly as good as vortex > mobius

) I want to make this a signature combo for my shred. I can do both tricks semi-consistantly...we'll see. I also did a bunch of mobiuses...one run with like four or something...meh, but it felt neat. I would've hit the flip vortex > mobius, but that was my bad hip and I didn't want to push it...

Other stuff, I'm sure.
I also got more comics today. Yay. I've been on a comics-purchasing rampage since I've moved here. Man... I'm gonna go read a LOT now, though I have, like, 20 Lone Wolf and Cub books to read still (let's see how many I can read in a week and a half!!)

K, gotta go read comics and draw.
Oh, we played some You Don't Know Jack tonight -- I like that game. It makes me happy. It's so fun.

Hey Erik can't wait to shred with you again on the 5th. Props on vortex > mobius. It a link of two of my first dream moves and I think I hit it for the first time the day you did or maybe that weekend (I forget). I want to request mobius > vortex when I see you next.

Yeah, I like gyro rev whirls, but they're way more awkward than gyro whirls for some reason...it's weird. But Tina totally inspired me to go for spinning > gyro [repeat] for rev whirls!!

I dunno about the repeat for vortex > mobius...but maybe one day. Or even reverse combo... I am working on mobius > spinning clipper [repeat] so that I can mobius > mobius better, and even just spinning clipper is really hard right now

Hey, I've been in a drawing groove -- I drew like three times more than I usually do, like, last night or the night before -- it felt so good!! So I took a bunch of pictures with my digital camera just a bit ago. They're crappy, and the actual drawings themselves are just, like, poopoos, but they're poopoos that I'm pretty happy with for the mostpart. I will disclaim that I've pretty much JUST started learning to draw the way I've been wanting to for years and years, and so for the 90% part of all of this I have no idea what I'm doing. Keep that in mind -- I plan to be awesome by this time next year

Thanks to Mike Faille for giving me tons of pointers and for being such a super influence!!

So, here's a bunch of sketches, or doodles, or whatever. None of this is really what I want to be doing yet -- just exercises and practice to try to learn how to draw from my head. Ahoy!
(Oh yeah, and there are, like, almost 40 pictures, and they're not really super small, so...don't sit and wait if you're expecting something great.)

I think this was, like, my second, or third drawing of the year, after mking my New Years resolution (to draw every day). There's, like, a wrestler guy, and a knight, and a manly-looking girl without a shirt, and some really dramatic guy posing...

There's me again, and on the far right is Lyrisius, this hero guy with a spear that I am going to eventually draw a comic about.

This is one of my favourite drawings that I've done!! It was all from my head (I'm really REALLY bad at faces!) and I was so happy that it looked like the same guy from a different angle!! This was my take on Mace Windu, 'cause he's so badass. Oh yeah, and there's a crocodile thingy that I drew with Marita at the bottom...like I think she drew, but with my hand, or something?

Mobius! It's a really blurry picture... This was from my head -- I was happy that it looks so accurate for the movement..

I like the guy's head on the bottom. That was like the first time I tried to draw a face at that angle, from my head, I think..

I like this top one, but contrary to what Marita says, his hands aren't disappearing into his ass..

I like the top one again. The bottom was supposed to be Wolverine. I don't draw hair... yet, I guess.

I kinda liked the muscles on the top one, but then I messed it all up, and he looks too elongated and stuff... Oh well.

The wyrm from my Lyrisius story -- that's Lyrisius on the right; so, like, the dragon is big.

Lyrisius, like, meditating...I really don't like this one, but I did as I was drawing it.

I like the bottom pose, but his hands are in funky, contorted positions.. Well, the bottom one is. I think I like his left hand.

This is Fran from Final Fantasy XII. And on the right I tried to draw a horse without a reference, and I don't think I've ever drawn a horse before... It looks more like a donkey?

Another elongated person. There are a bunch of places on the body where I have NO idea what's going on...like hips...it's kinda really.. yeah. I'm trying to work on shoulder blades and legs (and thigh connecting to pelvis) right now... it's fun to have a theme. For a while I was drawing people from behind, 'cause that's way harder.

These were yesterdays...I liked the top one, but there are so many messed up parts...you can really tell I have no idea how to draw legs here. And my shading is pretty lame, but it felt good to give it a blind stab.

More from the same ref. I like the topmost teeny one. Oh, these I did in pen without pencilling first, which is tough for me, but super fun. I tried out an Ashley Wood-esque style, and that made me feel awesome. Marita really likes the big one with the pencil overtop.

These were done without pencil -- super tough! I was so happy with them. But from a reference again.. I really like that one spot, on the one with pencil overtop, that one highlight in the crinkle of the hip.

That pose... from, like, a Michaelangelo? Or Raphael?... I dunno.. it was from that 3D program again. Oh yeah, just in pen again...it looks pretty wonky. But it looks kinda cool 'cause it's a pretty big drawing.

This was going to be Ashe from FFXII, and I used that program a bit to help me with the pose... I never finished it.

Me. I did pencil first...and this was my lame attempt at trying ink wash...

And here are all of the comics that I've bought since, like, September... many hundreds of dollars went into this... They are all so pretty. It's, like, a blury picture again.. There are a couple little ones tucked into that corner on the right.. These are all (mostly) SUPER DUPER comics!!!!!!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!

I love all your sketches, particularly all the "construction" lines where I can almost see you working on finding that perfect contour.

For the monster/minotaur legs, if the problem is the general structure, what helps me is to think of how it's almost exactly the same as our own bone structure but with different proportions and a different stance.

The key is to think of of them standing on the balls of the foot (3) while in a deep squatting position. As for the proportions, the metatarsals of the foot tend to be much longer than ours and are roughly the same length as their femur and tibia/fibula.

If it was just the back view giving you problems then... I can't help you - I have a hard time drawing anything from the back!!!! In either case, I'll edit this later to just the first 2 lines.

Erik Chan, some super good stuff there. I've always had sort of a want to draw, but my motor skills are terrible, so it's never come into fruition. I dunno, maybe I'm tripping out, but it feels like there's definitely a progression from the first sketch to the last one. I like your drawing style a bunch, and I think fantasy styled comics would definitely fit your feel really nicely. I found that some of the sketches reminded me a bit of some of the artwork from the original Baldur's Gate PC game. I dunno if you've ever played it....anyway! Good stuff!!! Seeya at the march!
