Barefoot

Post by Just call me hagesy »

Hey there chaps and lasses.

I am making a come back to footbag after about 14 months out of the game.

I am working out ways of improving my training so as to improve my level of footbag.

I am wondering if it is worthwhile training barefoot as well as with shoes. And if this is a good idea, do you do this for clippers as well. I have read people hitting some massive toe combos bare foot, but not many clipper combos. Of course i know its a lot harder to clipper without shoes, but technique wise, would this help my game.

Thanks.

Hagesy.

I find that barefoot is useful for two things.

1, If you are at someones house, and don't have your shred shoes, but you have your bag with you, it is nice not to look like a fool when you try and show someone something.

2, I find it nice for learning. A good example, Double Around the World. Sometimes your feet just don't have the coordination to do it with shoes yet. So, if you try and get a DATW with shoes on, and fail, try a few dozen times, and then when you get the DATW you can try it with shoes, and be 10x further progressed than if you would have just tried it with shoes the entire time.

On the clipper subject, I don't think it is THAT worthwhile to practise them, you have to catch it on your heel, and if your muscle memory builds to catch and set the bag there, when you stick on your lavers you will have a hell of a time.

I don't know your level of play 14 months ago, but hopefully this was the response you were looking for.

Cody Rushing needs to answer this topic.

He quit for about 2 years and started again about a year ago. When he started again he didn't have footbag shoes and tried barefoot. He now shreds exclusively barefoot. He has a sizeable tendon on the front of each ankle which works as a nice cradle spot for clippers.

Here is a very-poorly edited video of us shredding from last fall. (It was my first session I ever edited)

It's not great, but it's the most recent footage I have of him that's more than 1 or two runs. Obviously he favors toes slightly, but he's hit stuff like PS Whirl and Mobius in bare feet.

I used to play quite a bit of barefoot footbag. It's great fun and a good way to recover from ankle injury as it's really hard to roll your ankle without shoes on. Oh and I hit my first flurry barefoot 8)
