Treatments for your bag

Post by AaronG »

Does anyone use any oils or leather treatments for their bags?

On the flying clipper they recommend Mink Oil (http://www.flyingclipper.com/home/fly/s ... w-tos.html)

On Kingston Footbag and in Pengs Washing Tuturial they recommend baby oil or fabric softner
(http://www.kingstonfootbag.com/washing.php)

I am thinking about trying the Mink Oil on both my Footfighter and Facile bags.

What do you guys use :?:

vegetable oil, works like a dream, just wash it off with water after soaking for a minute or 2.

It seems like any kind of oil would attract dirt...

I also gove my bags the kick-the-shit-out-of-'em treatment, and wash with shampoo.

before you ruin a good footbag by applying shit to it, why not just try to break it in the old fashion way, with hand rolling and kicking?

I believe the application of certain substances to be necessary ONLY when the bag is crusty and/or impossible to break in. Im fairly sure that the "mink oil" recommendation is not meant for footbags made from facile.

EDIT: Another tip to try for sand filled footbags is to use a small amount of mink oil after your footbag has been wet and then dried. The mink oil will help the suede stay "brushed up" which will help retain the sand inside.

do you have a sand-filled bag that is made from suede?

Sounds like the concensus is to just leave it alone...

The bag treatment idea was not necessarily for help breaking it in as much as a protectant to help preserve the material from the major beating it takes. You know like suntan lotion for the skin, or leather preserver for leather, or waterproofing spray for jackets.

Thanks for your input, i have an email out to ultrasuede to see if they recommend anything, i will let you know!

Great Topic.

Yeah, I've mixed Olive Oil in Hot water and soaked my Ultra Suede Light Facile bags in it and massaged them in it.

Definately use some sort of oil that the bag will absorb.

It helps make it softer and more "broke in".

It also heals the material making it stronger and less likely to tear or puncture due to being too dried out.

I often see shredders using "Too Dry of Footbags". and oild is the main way to moisten them back up permanently.

Try Bacon Grease. I bet Meat grease would be best.

Best thing you can do for a bag. All other oils and oddities are unnecessary and very risky.

i decided i dont think vegetable oil is a good idea. i tried it with one bag. it makes it really like dank for a good amount of time, but if you dont kick that particular bag for like a week it gets crusty, in my experience. i dont think i put too much in, and i thought i did a sufficient job of rinsing it, but i dunno. im glad i only tried it once a long time ago, and i wouldnt try it again.

i wash my bags with baby shampoo. this like liquid lavender baby shampoo...its ideal. and i sometimes wash a little fabric softener through a bag with lukewarm water. makes em bomb.

i know but if its just the same as kicking the hell out of it to break it in,whats the difference between kicking it and putting it in the drier on air dry?

i put mine in the wash/dryer in a pants pocket too. in my experience it doesn't pill them, and they come out really clean.

It's really about experimenting, it may work for some people, it may not for others. If you want to try something do it. If you're afraid that it will be detrimental to the bag's health, don't.
